With another grey day upon us, it's been a long time since residents of Toronto have seen the sun. According to an article I read from a week ago, the sun has shone for only three hours in January thus far. But it just started snowing, so at least that's something different to look at than "drab". And if nothing else, at least this winter hasn't been brutally cold. I guess it's hard to please everyone. If we have a mild winter (which has been the case thus far), it means not much sun, and it also means global warming, and if we have a bright, sunny winter, it means the weather is a lot colder. So...such is life in North America I guess!
Here's a picture of Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer at low tide from way back on August 24th, 2008. My dad and I spent about an hour exploring the town and wandered onto the beach; pretty far out, it would seem.

I took this photo of the Juno Beach Pier a couple of weeks ago, when we had the rough seas and high surf advisory. The waves crashed over the end of the pier, and it was eventually closed until calmer waters prevailed.
The red glow at the end of the pier was the rising sun's reflection off of the dark clouds.

“Within sight of this house over 100 men of the Queen’s Own Rifles were killed or wounded, in the first few minutes of the landings.”
That stark inscription welcomes visitors at the entrance of a large, timber-framed house overlooking Juno Beach, in the village of Bernières-sur-Mer, France. “La Maison des Canadiens," or Canada House, is one of the most iconic buildings in Canadian military history. It was one of the first houses liberated by Canadian soldiers on D-Day, 6 June 1944, and has since become a familiar historic landmark, standing in the backdrop of the many black-and-white photographs showing troops landing on the sands of this village in Normandy.

Rough seas, raging surf, and an epic sunrise. Not a bad way to start the day, unless of course, you were trying to fish from the pier. The waves and rolling surf was so big, the end of the pier was closed - and the fishermen didn't seem inclined to cast their lines anywhere else on the pier either.

Cette série de photographies a été réalisée sur les plages historiques du Débarquement du 6 juin 1944. Elle met en lumière les vestiges encore visibles aujourd’hui : bunkers, canons, monuments, qui rappellent le prix de la liberté.
Un hommage visuel aux soldats alliés et à la mémoire collective.

De nombreux véhicules dont une ambulance Humber au premier plan, des civils et des militaires, un drapeau français sur une façade à gauche.
Creully a été libérée le 6 juin par les Canadiens débarqués à Juno mais des troupes britanniques débarquées à Gold y font leur jonction.
En bas à droite un panneau FDS avec une Croix-Rouge, Field Dressing Station poste de soins de campagne canadien.
