Misophrice sp.

Family: Curculionidae

Order: Coleoptera

This genus is characterised by clawless tarsi and 6 joined antennal funicle (5-segmented in Anarciarthrum and 7-segmented in Thechia). The first funicle segment in Misophrice is stout and about as long as the second and third combined, while the second segment is slightly longer than the third (Lea, 1927).

I have compared this insect here with reference photos for Anarciarthrum and mine has one more segment in the antennae. So I think this is Misophrice. I think the antennal segment count mentioned in the description (Lea, 1927) starts with the first segment that is visible in this shot and excludes the club. If that is correct, then the first segment is "stout", the second segment is indeed slightly longer than the third, and there are 6 segments as per the description for Misophrice.

Lea categorises this genus into 6 groups. The weevil in this observation falls into his group 3 in that it is "clothed" in scales. Species that he lists as in this group include: cristatifrons, Lea ; orthorrhina, Lea ; squamibunda, Lea; squamiventris, Lea. Only M. squamiventris has photographic observations for comparison but this observation appears to be generally similar in appearance to that species as do the key descriptions by Lea, though there seems some variability in the observations that are attributed to this species on iNaturalist (Lea, 1906).

The genus are pollen feeders and usually only found on Casuarina or Allocasuarina. Casuarinas are plentiful in the area where this was found; the nearest tree though was about 50m away.

There must of been 30 foamers here. Well worth the stop as the foam may have been thick, but the shot was great.

BNSF MOW workers install rail joining bars on a section of 40 foot panel track that has just been laid into place by a pair of front end loaders, as part of the track replacement project on Main #1 through the station at Fullerton California.

The last time this was done was 14 years ago and thanks to the strike at the port, the early part of December turned out to be a good time to do this project.

I would like to thank the crew who were gracious enough to allow me to photograph their activities that night - the opening in the crowd watching the loader was not by accident.

"A new and significant threat to tigers in the wild comes from large scale tiger farms in China. Tigers are being speed-bred at these farms to supply tiger bone and other body parts for commercial trade in the hope that China will one day allow the sale of their byproducts to be legal."

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul and State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker joins the NYS American Academy of Pediatrics and over 100 anti-vaping advocates at the State Capitol to rally support for the Governor's campaign to ban all flavored nicotine vaping products, including menthol flavors, and to restrict vaping advertisements aimed at youth.

The legislation, proposed by the Governor as part of this year's budget, would also authorize the State Department of Health to regulate the sale of vaping product carrier oils deemed to be a public health risk and prohibit the online, phone and mail order sale of e-cigarettes. Only registered retailers would be allowed to purchase e-cigarettes using those methods. The campaign also includes a new hashtag - #NoVapeNY - as well as a petition where New Yorkers can show their support for the legislation and a website - ny.gov/endvaping - with more information about the Governor's proposals.

These proposals build on the Governor's previous actions to protect New Yorkers from the dangers of vaping and cigarette smoking. In 2017, the Governor expanded the Clean Indoor Air Act to prohibit e-cigarette use in nearly every workplace setting to protect workers and the public from harmful secondhand tobacco smoke and vaping aerosols. In 2019, e-liquid retailers were required to register with the Department of Taxation and Finance, and the Governor signed legislation to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco and electronic cigarette products from 18 to 21 - the law went into effect on November 13, 2019.

From 2014 to 2018 youth use of e-cigarettes has increased by 160 percent. Nearly 40 percent of 12th grade students and 27 percent of all high school students are now using e-cigarettes. Flavored nicotine e-liquids are the principal marketing strategy of the vaping industry. One in five youth believe that nicotine e-cigarettes are both harmless and not addictive. A two-sided flyer is issued in November 1969 urging people to participate in the Revolutionary Contingent during the November 14-15, 1969 moratorium against the Vietnam War.

The flyer advertises two events in New York City and two in Washington, D.C.—a rally at Dupont Circle on November 14th and a rally at the U.S. Justice Department November 15th along with a rally in New Haven, CT.

The flier lists a number of demands, including ‘Free Bobby Seale,’ ‘Free the Panther 21,’ ‘No Draft for Imperialist Wars,’ ‘Support the PRG—U.S. Out of Vietnam Now,’ ‘Victory to the 10 Point Peace Program of the NLF,’ ‘Vietnam: Love it Or Leave it,’ ‘Unity with GI Struggles—Turn the Guns Around,’ ‘Freedom and Self-determination for all Women,’ ‘All power to all Oppressed People,’ ‘Occupation troops out of Black and Latin Communities,’ Stop the Conspiracy 8 Trial,’ ‘and Free All Political Prisoners.’

The massive Moratorium march in Washington, D.C. drew about 250,000 people in non-violent protest of the Vietnam War.

However, the evening before, the rally at Dupont Circle drew upwards of 15,000 people who attempted to march on the Republic of (South) Vietnam embassy. Clashes broke out with police who halted the march using tear gas and at one point drawing their pistols. The crowd responded with rocks and bottles and several Molotov cocktails.

After the main march the next day, upwards of 20,000 went to the U.S. Justice Department where windows were broken and clashes again erupted with police. Police again used tear gas while the protesters fought back with rocks and bottles.

The two Revolutionary Contingent actions during the Moratorium were among the most violent clashes of the Vietnam War era in the District of Columbia. The others were perhaps The Day After demonstration following the trial of the Chicago 8/7, clashes with police in Georgetown during the Mayday demonstrations and the 1972 battle at the foot of the U.S. Capitol in which police chief Jerry Wilson was struck repeatedly in the head with rocks.

I joined the Great Peace March for a few days through Iowa. Just west of Des Moines, at a place called the Living History Farm, a bunch of us went out into a field and formed a giant human peace sign to be photographed from above. We were a conga line from time to time.

That's my friend Dan on the far left. Notice how everyone is tan (or red) except the woman in blue, who'd joined the march in Nebraska.

I later joined the elderly Australian lady and her husband you see in the background- I was sitting away from them and separately, as you can see in the background. The man who was clad in ethnic dress and who you saw with the barong in the first picture in this series has now changed back into Western attire and is sitting alongside his wife. He was not very communicative, but the lady invited me to move one row back and sit with them, which I did. My good guide Madhi took this picture of me and the guests in between his organizing and helping duties at the temple. (Bali, Indonesia, May 2018)

This is another photo of the arch at Waverley beach, this time in some radically stormy weather with big surf. It was well dark at this stage (I couldn't see what exactly was in the frame!) and even with a 60sec exposure it was still a bit underexposed.
