Paire de bracelets en rubis et brillants pour la duchesse d’Angoulême (Pair of Ruby and Diamond Bracelets for the Duchess of Angoulême), designed by Paul-Nicolas Menière (joaillier) and Jacques-Evrard Bapst (dessinateur), dating to 1816, and Élément de la ceinture de la parure de rubis et diamants de la duchesse d’Angoulême (Belt Element from the Ruby and Diamond Parure of the Duchess of Angoulême), designed by Jacques-Evrard Bapst (1771–1842) and Frédéric Bapst, dating to 1827, are both on display in Room 705 (Galerie d’Apollon) of the Denon Wing,

This belt plaque, crafted in gold and set with three rubies and 84 brilliant-cut diamonds, is one of 24 originally comprising a belt from the reworked parure of the Duchess of Angoulême, daughter of Louis XVI. The set, redesigned in 1827, repurposed jewels from Marie-Louise’s earlier parure. The duchess’s jewels were later worn by Empress Eugénie in 1853 and remained intact until the 1887 sale of the Crown Jewels. This particular plaque, later mounted as a brooch, was purchased by the Count of Polignac and entered the Louvre’s collection in 2019.

These bracelets, set with 72 rubies and 420 brilliant-cut diamonds, exemplify the refined elegance of the Bourbon Restoration. Initially created using jewels from a parure designed for Empress Marie-Louise, the bracelets were remounted in 1816 for Marie-Thérèse-Charlotte, Duchess of Angoulême. Their design features alternating oves and floral motifs centered on three rubies, combining the rich red of rubies with the brilliance of diamonds. The parure was worn by successive royal figures, including Queen Marie-Amélie and Empress Eugénie, and survived the 1887 Crown Jewels auction before entering the Louvre via a bequest from Claude Menier in 1973.

The Louvre is the world’s most visited museum and one of its largest, housing over 35,000 works of art from prehistory to the 19th century. Originally built as a fortress under Philippe Auguste in the late 12th century, it was transformed into a royal palace and later into a public museum during the French Revolution in 1793. Its collections span eight departments, including Egyptian antiquities, Greek and Roman art, Islamic art, sculpture, decorative arts, paintings, prints, and drawings. The museum is organized across three wings—Denon, Sully, and Richelieu—surrounding the Cour Napoléon. The modern glass Pyramid entrance, designed by architect I. M. Pei and inaugurated in 1989, unifies the historic palace complex while serving as a symbol of the museum’s global identity.

Here we have the conflation of my two obsessions: Contax gear and Sheaffer Targa pens. I have never seen this Contax leather pen-case before and I've christened it with a Targa Fred Force 10 fountain and ball-point pen set with its distinctive cable-twist design in palladium and gold. A limited number was produced for leading French jeweller, Fred Joaillier, in 1992.

Full title: Le Jeune homme au violon. Charles Théodose Godefroy (1718-1796), fils aîné du joaillier Charles Godefroy.

Adapted to serve as a counterpart to the Child with Toton, a slightly later image of the teenager's younger brother. Canvas no doubt commissioned by Charles Godefroy, jeweler and banker, father of the model (he probably owned the 2 Chardins today in Williamstown).
