The waiting area at the Toyota dealer was bustling when I took my car in to get an oil change. Everyone was doing something: talking on a cell phone, working on a computer, listening to an ipod, reading the paper. Jim was the exception. He was sitting quietly, looking patient, not doing anything in particular. So I struck up a conversation, during which he gave me permission to take a few photos.
Since his retirement, six years ago, Jim's lived in a condo in a town near my town. (He was a blueprint engineer for the city of Chicago.) He has three grown daughters and five grandchildren. A few months ago, he was knocked down by a car as he crossed the street from the town library to the parking lot. He was taken to the hospital. The woman driving the car was not issued a ticket, apparently because Jim was "jaywalking"!

Born in Sheffield, Jim Malone studied at Camberwell School of Arts, London and with Ray Finch, Winchcombe Pottery, Gloucestershire during the seventies and has continued a career spanning over thirty years. He has steadily built up a reputation as an eminent exponent of thrown reduction fired stoneware and porcelain pots. What is impressive about Jim Malone is that he has stuck to his chosen course so effectively and over a period when some of the developments in the so called 'Leach School' have become somewhat pastiche and derivative, Jim Malone is a genuine individualist. He has said of his work "I am not affected by current 'trends' and I avoid gimmicks. I have never felt the need to spread myself any wider, only to delve deeper".
Jim Malone has exhibited widely in this country as well as America, Germany and Hong Kong. He is included in the British Craft Council's index of selected craftsmen and is a Fellow of the Craftsman Potters Association of Great Britain. Malone's work is held in important British collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Museum and Art Gallery collections at Bolton, York and Liverpool as well as in the Crafts Council Collection and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
Jim Denevan is from outer space, I’m sure of it. The huge complex designs he carves into sandy beaches are out of this world. It may seem that he creates these works simply with a branch and patience, but Creative Tempest knows that Jim Denevan hovers above our beaches in a tiny UFO firing lasers down to send messages back to his home planet. If Jim Denevan is any indication of the artistic nature of his alien species, Creative Tempest welcomes the impending invasion. Find out more at www.creativetempest.com

I saw Jim was busking in the high street the other day, on what was a bitterly cold day. He was up for having his photo taken, and seemed to like the idea of the project. After a few shots and a brief chat, I bid him farewell saying don't get too cold, "I'll give it another hour, then I'm off home for a cuppa!" was his very sensible reply.

Jimi.
