'CRYPTIC PLUMAGE.'
An image I made six years ago from Island Mere hide.
This little Jack Snipe attracted a lot of attention from photographers because it stayed loyal to the same location for days on end. With patience it could be relied upon to show, though always partially hidden behind reed stems - as is the nature of the bird!
I remember it spent most of it's time sleeping, typical daytime behaviour. Dozing peacefully, it seemed oblivious to the many eyes trained on it, all willing some action. However, once on the move, bobbing along, it often glanced up at the hide acknowledging an appreciative audience!
In this image it was bobbing up and down furtively behind some reeds searching for food items. With it's head inclined slightly and throat feathers fluffed out, it resembles a miniature Bittern don't you think ... or is that just me being fanciful?
I was on visit at the west coast town Esbjerg for a man that had been working in the harbour there. And this beauty af Jack up oildrilling rig was there, Mærks Highlander. Now standing quietly on it's "legs" filled of mussels and keyhole limpets, wind blown and affected of the harsh conditions of the North Sea.

Ice jacking occurs as lake ice expands, a mile stretch of lake ice can expand as much as 3 feet. More pronounced this year due to the wildly fluctuating temperatures, forecast is between -20 and +5 C for the next few days....what to wear??

Sep. 24, 2023: "Jacks" is a 2016 art installation in Parker, Colorado, by Christopher Weed. Each jack is 20 feet square and 14 feet tall.

A very fun shoot with the gorgeous Jack Guinness for Models 1 this weekend. SUCH a nice guy, this shoot was a blast.
The owner was found dead in his pub near Brittas Bay, Co Wicklow by gardaí on 19 March, 1996.
A well-known Wicklow publican, Tom had been counting up his St Patrick’s Day takings at Jack White’s Inn where he lived, when he was killed by pellets from a single close range shotgun blast.
His wife Catherine had told gardaí that she was awoken by someone “pressing her face to the pillow” and shouting at her for money.
When they arrived, they found Tom Nevin on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood.
It later emerged that about £14,600 - €16,500 currently, was taken from the pub and the Nevins’ car had been taken and was found later abandoned in Dublin. All signs pointed to a botched robbery.
Four years later, Catherine Nevin was on trial at Dublin Central Criminal Court, accused of both murdering her husband and soliciting three other men to murder him.
Mrs Nevin attempted to characterise her husband who was well liked in his community as a quiet, hard working man – as being a member of the IRA, gay and a drunkard.
On the prosecution side, it was alleged that Catherine Nevin had had affairs with a garda inspector, a judge and a convicted criminal and was said to have used her ”silken boudoir - den of sleaze” to “bed a bevy of sex-hungry men” while “plotting her husband’s murder”.
She was convicted and sentenced to life in prison and dubbed "The Black Widow"!
I had a delicious lunch in the very room yesterday and the staff were brilliant!! :)

Lymnocryptes minimus. Jack Snipe are about 30% smaller than snipe with a much shorter bill. They breed in northern Scandanavia and are winter visitors to Britain. They are often difficult to see as they feed in boggy vegetation. This one was showing well at Canal Scrape hide at Spurn, East Yorkshire. It was bobbing all the time it was feeding. I've had to crop heavily to a 1/4 of the sensor area, so the not the best quality shot, but a nice bird to see.
Jack Tripper, the eyeless kitten. He was busy chasing the little flying bugs tonight!

People have colorful memories of their teenage years. I don’t want to say I don’t, but they are different. They are mostly memories of books & poetry. And writing English words over & over again. Memorizing them over & over again. Work @ 14 to make myself look decent & save money for College. Then 20 years ago San Francisco happened and it was the highlight of my life ! So basically learning English, work & San Francisco !!!

This cowboy was rounding up a couple strays from the brush near Silver Jack Reservoir. Got the job done, tipped his hat, and he and the herd moseyed down the road.
Boeing B-29A 44-61975 is so large it has its own hangar with just two far smaller aircraft for company.
Built in 1945, it was later converted to a trainer, but then converted back to a regular bomber again in the 1950s when it served in Korea. Around this time, it also flew from the USAF base at Molesworth in Cambridgeshire.
It was one of several B-29s that were used for target practice in Maryland in the 1960s, but came out relatively unscathed in 1973 when it was rescued by the New England Air Museum here at Windsor Locks.
