Lake Como, in Northern Italy’s Lombardy region, is an upscale resort area known for its dramatic scenery, set against the foothills of the Alps. The lake is shaped like an upside-down Y, with three slender branches that meet at the resort town of Bellagio. At the bottom of the southwest branch lies the city of Como, home to Renaissance architecture and a funicular that travels up to the mountain town of Brunate.

In the 1970s, the Communist Party of Romania decided to put a wider focus on marketing for tourism to their country. Because of the location of Bran Castle, its dramatic architecture, its connection to Vlad III Dracula and his connection to Bram Stoker's Dracula, the castle was marketed as the "real Dracula Castle". This benefited tourism and improved Romania’s economy.

This is a black and white version of a colour photo uploaded a few days ago. I liked the complimentary colours of the blue sky and gold corn stubble in the original but this version is also appealing for its dramatic effect. A little light toning was applied, plus light overall vignetting and some burning of the bottom edge.

In October 2015, Holly & The Sacred Flame unveiled “Plague” at their Oddities performance. It was one of the most powerful, unnerving and artistic performances I have ever seen. Created from the ground up and brought to life in all its dramatic darkness. It wasn’t just the costumes that were spectacular but the very movements of the dance seemed to inspire fear and awe, beauty and the macabre. A few people didn’t understand but you didn’t have too, its art and sometimes not understanding art can be a good thing too. I was one of the few who got sneak peaks before the performance and I knew it would be pure gold followed by “I need to do this as a shoot in the backdrop of the forest”. Before I even saw one move I knew this was something we needed to explore further. It’s quite difficult to ask them to stop mid performance with questions like “hey, can you just hold that pose right there” lol or “Oooo oh…look at me lol.. Don’t think they would have appreciated it lol. Originally rescheduled due to weather, I’ve had these ideas roaming around in my head since October. In 2012 we all came together as a creative partnership intent on making beautiful things with beautiful people. We have become so much more. Sisters and soul mates, artists and muses, friends and companions all with the same wonderful visions of maybe just making the world brighter, making people think or feel something, anything. You wouldn’t believe how hard that is in this day with the constant assault of online media. Life is hard, but achieving happiness shouldn’t be hard if you surround yourself with the right people. I don’t know what I did to be blessed with so many loving and supportive sisters but I love them so very much….In love and art, we ascend, we bloom and we live forever in the warm embrace of each other.

Oddities 2016 is coming in October! If you missed the last one you probably shouldn’t miss this one, jus sayin.

Call of Duty 4 gave all of us a ride that we would never forget. From the action-packed ship raid to the showdown on the bridge, you never had more than a few seconds to catch your breath. However, while the Aftermath scene is sure to live in the annals of videogame history for its dramatic storytelling; there was nothing quite like suiting up ghillie-style to go behind enemy lines.

Centaurus A, also known as NGC 5128, is well known for its dramatic dusty lanes of dark material. Hubble's observations, using its most advanced instrument, the Wide Field Camera 3, are the most detailed ever made of this galaxy. They have been combined here in a multi-wavelength image that reveals never-before-seen detail in the dusty portion of the galaxy.

As well as features in the visible spectrum, this composite shows ultraviolet light from young stars, and near-infrared light, which lets us glimpse some of the detail otherwise obscured by the dust.

The dark dust lane that crosses Centaurus A does not show an absence of stars, but rather a relative lack of starlight, as the opaque clouds block the visible light from reaching us. Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 has focussed on these dusty regions, which span from corner to corner in this image. Wider views from ground-based telescopes show this stripe crossing the entire galaxy.

This is an area of tremendous history and there are stone circles, remains from the romans and medieval villages to be found.

In the Mallerstang valley you will find the atmospheric ruins of Pendragon Castle with its reputed connection to Uther Pendragon – the father of King Arthur. Towering over the castle is Wild Boar Fell where Sir Richard de Musgrave is thought to have killed the last wild boar in Britain. There could be something in this as his tomb is in Kirkby Stephen church and, when it was examined, in addition to his bones there were two wild boar tusks.

More modern history was created by the building of railways. The Settle to Carlisle railway cuts through the Westmorland Dales as part of its dramatic journey through the Dales with its stunning examples of Victorian engineering. There was also Stainmore Railway which was built to bring coal from the Tees Valley over to Cumbria for use in making iron. Although this railway closed in the 1960s it has left some tremendous reminders of its existence such as the viaducts over Podgill and Smardale and the station at Kirkby Stephen East.

In addition to historical significance, the Marpi region at the northern end of Saipan has many natural features, starting with its dramatic, rugged cliffs.

Noted sites in Marpi include Kalabera Cave, Bird Island and the Grotto, a sunken pool linked to the Pacific Ocean.

This could have been an incredible shot had I 1) had the tripod with me, and 2) happened upon it even five minutes earlier to gather my bearings and find a steady flat surface before the moon disappeared.

The crescent moon and its dramatic earth shine set almost perfectly at the vanishing point of the Cumbres & Toltec railroad tracks outside Antonito, CO.

The west window of All Saints Pavement contains a sequence of stained glass panels from c1370, depicting Christ's Passion & Resurrection. They were originally in the now redundant church of St Saviour in York and were reinstalled here in the mid 20th century.

All Saints in Pavement, York is distinguished by its dramatic octagonal tower, a major landmark of the city and masterpiece of late medieval architecture. The church itself is of mainly 14th/15th century date, though lost its chancel in the following centuries. The west window contains reset late 14th century panels depicting the Passion.

This church is generally open and welcoming to visitors.

A small country church between Fort Valley and Marshallville, Georgia. The only way to get the sign in the picture with the church was to stand out in the highway right on the middle line. I kept listening for the sound of very fast vehicles from left and right while holding the frame and checking the exposure, which kept changing as the sun ducked in and out from behind the clouds above. To my right was a hill so as soon as a vehicle was heard I had to move immediately. Fortunately, no vehicles came while I took this photograph. Photography has its dramatic moments.

A man who lives nearby said they meet only once a month.

A 3.7ct kunzite, catching the last rays of sunlight and showing its dramatic dichroism. Something I find fascinating about gems and minerals are how optical properties are unique to their composition and crystal structure.

Corfe Castle is an iconic medieval fortification situated above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, England. Today, its dramatic ruins—nestled in a gap within the Purbeck Hills—stand as a poignant reminder of centuries of turbulent history in southern England .

Built shortly after the Norman Conquest, Corfe Castle is one of the earliest examples of stone fortifications in England. Its strategic location, controlling a narrow gap on the route between Wareham and Swanage, made it a key military stronghold from the outset.

Over the 12th and 13th centuries, the castle underwent significant expansion and modification. In the 17th century, amid the upheavals of the English Civil War, the castle was one of the last Royalist bastions in southern England. Lady Mary Bankes notoriously led its defense against Parliamentarian forces, but by 1645 the castle fell, and Parliament ordered it to be slighted—deliberately rendered unusable as a military fortification .

Completed in 1975, Pennzoil Place consists of two 36-story trapezoidal towers of dark bronze-tinted glass connected by a 115-foot-high, glass-enclosed courtyard. Pennzoil Place was dubbed the Building of the Decade in 1975 by famed New York Times architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable due to its dramatic sculptural silhouette. The building is also considered significant in architectural circles for breaking the modernist glass box made popular by followers of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and for introducing the era of postmodernism.

Extremely rare in cultivation, Nernstia mexicana is one of the most beautiful flowering plants in the world. Native to San Luis Potosí and Hidalgo, Mexico between ~1000-3600m elevation, this slow-growing shrub has tidy grey-green leaves with recurved margins and a matte finish. These serve as a perfect backdrop to its dramatic pure white trumpet flowers which emit a fantastic fragrance. This species has considerable horticultural potential and it is my hope that it will someday be available to plant collectors and gardeners in all climates suitable to its cultivation.

Nernstia mexicana belongs to the Coffee-Gardenia family (Rubiaceae) and more specifically to the Portlandiinae subtribe of the Chiococceae tribe, which means that it is a close relative to other glamorous genera such as Osa and Portlandia.

White Sands National Monument is in the northern Chihuahuan Desert in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It's known for its dramatic landscape of rare white gypsum sand dunes. Trails through the dunes include the raised Interdune Boardwalk and the Dune Life Nature Trail, dotted with interpretive exhibits on wildlife and other features. In 1838, the Cherokee nation was displaced by settlers and set off on an infamous march that became known as the Trail of Tears. They were only able to take their most precious possessions with them, one of which was this bean. The young pods can be eaten raw or cooked, and they freeze perfectly. A Great White Egret has been reported here on Saltmarsh Pool, since 1st November. Today was the first opportunity we have had to view it and were fortunate, on arrival at 10.30 am, to see it immediately.

Although there were several birders in Maryland Layby, it showed no nervousness and continued to hunt both on the Saltmarsh and the Pool … very active but continually under attack from the resident Lapwings and, to some degree, the Gulls - although all kept a healthy distance away, not pressing home the attack. Two Grey Heron were present and from time to time made sudden and determined attacks but it merely moved 20 or 30 yards and proceeded to feed again.

A large group of Snipe now resident on the Pool, were very wary of it and on its approach, quickly scuttled away or occasionally went into a couple of fear flights. Even Teal and Wigeon were clearly intimidated by its presence.

The Egret was clearly recognised as a strange and potentially dangerous interloper. Its dramatic stride and obvious height, coupled with its quickness, illustrated its potential as a hunter - obviously finding food in the grass, water and in the air. Its method in the water was to trample quite vigorously to stir up mud to release food - continuously pacing quickly forward - then backtracking.

We had a very entertaining couple of hours with this graceful adroit visitor to Campfield and have made a video of the session, as the weather and lighting conditions were good and presented a unique opportunity.

The beautiful and now tranquil setting of Augustinian Lanercost Priory belies an often troubled history. The mortally sick King Edward I rested here for five months in 1306-7, shortly before his death on his final campaign.

Salon 1874, no. 326

Cassatt began her artistic training in Philadelphia before moving to Paris in 1865. There, she found better opportunities than those available to women artists in America. Her work debuted at the Salon in 1868. Although she exhibited there several times, Cassatt began to criticize the Salon's focus on conventional art.

Ida, with its dramatic use of black paint and bold brushwork, reflects Cassatt's admiration for Spanish art. Her growing freedom in handling oil paint and the frank depiction of her subject are apparent here. This painting, largely unnoticed by critics in 1874, caught the attention of Edgar Degas, who remarked, "There is someone who feels as I do." When the two artists finally met, Degas invited Cassatt to show her work with the impressionists. Debuting at their fourth exhibition in 1879, Cassatt was the only American ever to join the group.

Rodeo Beach is one of the most stunning beaches available in California's Bay Area. It draws throngs of photographers who come for its dramatic sea-stacks and sheer cliffs. These were the things that captivated me most on previous visits, but this time, I was far more intrigued by the giant rocks that line the beach. I could not help but think that if the beach wasn't protected as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, sculptors and artists would have taken these rocks long ago, for the beautiful veins and intricate patterns. But just sitting on the shore, they are reserved for the world's oldest sculptor, slowly and methodically being fashioned into a living work of art, unequaled by any carved by human hands.

Towering over the castle is Wild Boar Fell where Sir Richard de Musgrave is thought to have killed the last wild boar in Britain. There could be something in this as his tomb is in Kirkby Stephen church and, when it was examined, in addition to his bones there were two wild boar tusks.

More modern history was created by the building of railways. The Settle to Carlisle railway cuts through the Westmorland Dales as part of its dramatic journey through the Dales with its stunning examples of Victorian engineering. There was also Stainmore Railway which was built to bring coal from the Tees Valley over to Cumbria for use in making iron. Although this railway closed in the 1960s it has left some tremendous reminders of its existence such as the viaducts over Podgill and Smardale and the station at Kirkby Stephen East.

White Sands National Monument is in the northern Chihuahuan Desert in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It's known for its dramatic landscape of rare white gypsum sand dunes. Trails through the dunes include the raised Interdune Boardwalk and the Dune Life Nature Trail, dotted with interpretive exhibits on wildlife and other features. Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah is known for its dramatic desert landscape carved by the Colorado River. Island in the Sky is a huge, flat-topped mesa with panoramic overlooks. Other notable areas include the towering rock pinnacles known as the Needles, the remote canyons of the Maze and the Native American rock paintings in Horseshoe Canyon. Whitewater rapids flow through Cataract Canyon.

Podere al Salcio is an 18th century stone and brick country house originally built in the local tradition as a farming building, with animals in the low building on the left, haystack, granary and deposit on the ground floor of the main house. The first floor used to hosts the farmers' families.
