Thomas Jefferson described the Tulip Poplar as "The Juno of our Groves" when he forwarded seeds to a Parisian friend, Madame de Tesse, in 1805. The Tulip Poplar, also called Yellow Poplar or Tuliptree, is a fast growing tree and the tallest hardwood species of the eastern North American forest. It is both a majestic and graceful tree and is especially treasured in European parks and gardens, where it was first described in 1687. Its dramatic, golden yellow autumn color, its ornamental, orange and green, tulip-like flowers, and its unusual leaves and quick growth lend this species the mythological glory Thomas Jefferson justly admired.

This is a black and white version of a colour photo uploaded a few days ago. I liked the complimentary colours of the blue sky and gold corn stubble in the original but this version is also appealing for its dramatic effect. A little light toning was applied, plus light overall vignetting and some burning of the bottom edge.

Mizen Head is located at the extremity of a peninsula in the district of Carbery in County Cork, Ireland. It is one of the extreme points of the island of Ireland and is a major tourist attraction, noted for its dramatic cliff scenery. One of the main transatlantic shipping routes passes close by to the south, and Mizen Head was, for many seafarers, the first (or last) sight of Europe. The west window of All Saints Pavement contains a sequence of stained glass panels from c1370, depicting Christ's Passion & Resurrection. They were originally in the now redundant church of St Saviour in York and were reinstalled here in the mid 20th century.
All Saints in Pavement, York is distinguished by its dramatic octagonal tower, a major landmark of the city and masterpiece of late medieval architecture. The church itself is of mainly 14th/15th century date, though lost its chancel in the following centuries. The west window contains reset late 14th century panels depicting the Passion.
This church is generally open and welcoming to visitors.

A 3.7ct kunzite, catching the last rays of sunlight and showing its dramatic dichroism. Something I find fascinating about gems and minerals are how optical properties are unique to their composition and crystal structure.

Completed in 1975, Pennzoil Place consists of two 36-story trapezoidal towers of dark bronze-tinted glass connected by a 115-foot-high, glass-enclosed courtyard. Pennzoil Place was dubbed the Building of the Decade in 1975 by famed New York Times architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable due to its dramatic sculptural silhouette. The building is also considered significant in architectural circles for breaking the modernist glass box made popular by followers of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and for introducing the era of postmodernism.
Extremely rare in cultivation, Nernstia mexicana is one of the most beautiful flowering plants in the world. Native to San Luis Potosí and Hidalgo, Mexico between ~1000-3600m elevation, this slow-growing shrub has tidy grey-green leaves with recurved margins and a matte finish. These serve as a perfect backdrop to its dramatic pure white trumpet flowers which emit a fantastic fragrance. This species has considerable horticultural potential and it is my hope that it will someday be available to plant collectors and gardeners in all climates suitable to its cultivation.
Nernstia mexicana belongs to the Coffee-Gardenia family (Rubiaceae) and more specifically to the Portlandiinae subtribe of the Chiococceae tribe, which means that it is a close relative to other glamorous genera such as Osa and Portlandia.

The Westmorland Dales In The Yorkshire Dales National Park
This is an area of tremendous history and there are stone circles, remains from the romans and medieval villages to be found.
In the Mallerstang valley you will find the atmospheric ruins of Pendragon Castle with its reputed connection to Uther Pendragon – the father of King Arthur. Towering over the castle is Wild Boar Fell where Sir Richard de Musgrave is thought to have killed the last wild boar in Britain. There could be something in this as his tomb is in Kirkby Stephen church and, when it was examined, in addition to his bones there were two wild boar tusks.
More modern history was created by the building of railways. The Settle to Carlisle railway cuts through the Westmorland Dales as part of its dramatic journey through the Dales with its stunning examples of Victorian engineering. There was also Stainmore Railway which was built to bring coal from the Tees Valley over to Cumbria for use in making iron. Although this railway closed in the 1960s it has left some tremendous reminders of its existence such as the viaducts over Podgill and Smardale and the station at Kirkby Stephen East.
Tianmen Mountain, located near the city of Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province, China, is a stunning natural landmark known for its dramatic scenery and cultural significance. Accessible by a steep cable car ride, the mountain features sheer cliffs, deep valleys, and lush forests, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. At the mountain's summit, visitors can explore the Tianmen Cave, a natural archway carved through the rock, often referred to as the "Heaven's Gate." Tianmen Mountain is also home to the Tianmen Shan National Forest Park, which encompasses diverse ecosystems, rare plant species, and hiking trails, providing opportunities for outdoor adventure and exploration amidst this awe-inspiring natural wonder.
Smailholm Tower is located at Smailholm, around five miles (8 km) west of Kelso in the Scottish Borders. Its dramatic situation, atop a crag of Lady Hill, commands wide views over the surrounding countryside. The tower is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument in the care of Historic Scotland. In June 2007 it was awarded the maximum "five-star" status as a tourist attraction from VisitScotland, a rating bestowed on only eight other sites in Scotland.

The beautiful and now tranquil setting of Augustinian Lanercost Priory belies an often troubled history. Standing close to Hadrian's Wall, it suffered frequent attacks during the long Anglo-Scottish wars, once by Robert Bruce in person. The mortally sick King Edward I rested here for five months in 1306-7, shortly before his death on his final campaign.
The east end of the 13th-century church survives to its full height, housing within its dramatic triple tier of arches some fine monuments.

Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah is known for its dramatic desert landscape carved by the Colorado River. Island in the Sky is a huge, flat-topped mesa with panoramic overlooks. Other notable areas include the towering rock pinnacles known as the Needles, the remote canyons of the Maze and the Native American rock paintings in Horseshoe Canyon. Whitewater rapids flow through Cataract Canyon.
Rodeo Beach is one of the most stunning beaches available in California's Bay Area. It draws throngs of photographers who come for its dramatic sea-stacks and sheer cliffs. These were the things that captivated me most on previous visits, but this time, I was far more intrigued by the giant rocks that line the beach. I could not help but think that if the beach wasn't protected as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, sculptors and artists would have taken these rocks long ago, for the beautiful veins and intricate patterns. But just sitting on the shore, they are reserved for the world's oldest sculptor, slowly and methodically being fashioned into a living work of art, unequaled by any carved by human hands.

Westmorland Dales In The Yorkshire Dales National Park
This is an area of tremendous history and there are stone circles, remains from the romans and medieval villages to be found.
In the Mallerstang valley you will find the atmospheric ruins of Pendragon Castle with its reputed connection to Uther Pendragon – the father of King Arthur. Towering over the castle is Wild Boar Fell where Sir Richard de Musgrave is thought to have killed the last wild boar in Britain. There could be something in this as his tomb is in Kirkby Stephen church and, when it was examined, in addition to his bones there were two wild boar tusks.
More modern history was created by the building of railways. The Settle to Carlisle railway cuts through the Westmorland Dales as part of its dramatic journey through the Dales with its stunning examples of Victorian engineering. There was also Stainmore Railway which was built to bring coal from the Tees Valley over to Cumbria for use in making iron. Although this railway closed in the 1960s it has left some tremendous reminders of its existence such as the viaducts over Podgill and Smardale and the station at Kirkby Stephen East.
Llao Llao, Río Negro: The jagged, mist-draped peaks of the Andes rise dramatically above the deep, obsidian waters of Nahuel Huapi Lake. This serene perspective captures the profound tranquility of the Patagonian wilderness, where the dense, temperate rainforest presses tightly against the shoreline. Soft, diffused daylight filters through the heavy cloud cover, muting the vibrant greens of the southern beech forests and emphasizing the rugged geological layers of the mountainside. The composition employs a natural framing technique, utilizing the overhanging boughs of native cypress trees to draw the eye toward the atmospheric depth of the distant, rain-kissed summits. Every element of the landscape reflects the iconic geography of the Nahuel Huapi National Park, an area celebrated for its dramatic transition from lush forest to towering glacial remnants. The absence of human presence in this frame allows the viewer to fully appreciate the raw, undisturbed scale of Argentina’s most storied lake district. Such vistas serve as a testament to the enduring allure of Patagonia, illustrating the region's unique ability to blend luxury accommodation with wild, untamed ecological beauty. Painted for the side altar on the Epistle Side (right) of the church, and it is still in place. It was probably painted 1578-79, following the completion of the High Altarpiece. The presence of Saint Ildefonso, the patron Saint of Toledo, was stipulated in the documents. Diego de Castilla, the Dean of Toledo Cathedral, is probably represented in this figure, which certainly is a portrait. The figure assists in setting an ideal plane for the enacting of the mystic event. El Greco has eliminated the intrusion of an incongruous space. The ground running parallel with the plane of the action produces no conflict. The rhythm of the passages of colour and light over the surface helps to hold together the composition, with its dramatic split revealing the figure of the Risen Christ. What suggestions remain of an ordinary conception of space, of corporeality and of a schematic quality of composition, disappear in his final version of the subject (painted in 1596-1600, now in the Prado, Madrid).

Podere al Salcio is an 18th century stone and brick country house originally built in the local tradition as a farming building, with animals in the low building on the left, haystack, granary and deposit on the ground floor of the main house. The first floor used to hosts the farmers' families.
It enjoys the most stunning views 360° degrees round, changing in colour throughout the day and seasons. Val d'Orcia is a Unesco World Heritage region for its dramatic beauty and untouched landscapes.

The glaciers in Vatnajökull and Snæfellsnes national parks are popular for ice climbing, hiking and snowmobiling.
