137th Airlift Squadron / 105th Airlift Wing C-17A takes off on its dramatic demo at the Westfield Airshow.

The Miami Tower is a 47-story, landmark office skyscraper in Miami, Florida, United States. It is located in central Downtown. It is currently the 8th tallest building in Miami and Florida. On April 18, 2012, the AIA's Florida Chapter placed it on its list of Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places as the Bank of America Tower.

 

Built for CenTrust Bank in 1987, the 47-story building ranks in the top ten tallest skyscrapers in Miami and in Florida at a height of 625 feet (191 m) and is known for its elaborate night-time illuminations and its dramatic three glass tiers. Designed by the Pei Cobb Freed & Partners architectural firm, the tower consists of two separate structures: A 10-story parking garage owned by the city and the 47-story office tower built upon the air rights of the garage. Preliminary planning for the tower began in February 1980; construction on the garage began by November. The garage was completed in February 1983 and the tower began construction a year later. On August 1984, while the tower was under construction, a 5-alarm fire began on the ninth floor; construction was subsequently delayed for several weeks. On December 15, 1985, the tower was lit for the first time in Miami Dolphins aqua and snowflakes.

 

By mid-1986, the tower's exterior was complete and the grand opening for the complex was set for early fall that same year. Due to the uneven settling of the tower's foundation to one side by several inches, and the resulting misalignment of the tower's elevator rails, the grand opening for the complex was delayed until February 1987. The complete complex featured the world's only elevated metro station in a skyscraper (Knight Center station). It also gained notoriety for its luxurious interiors, including a sky lobby on the 11th floor covered in marble and gold and a 10,000 sq ft (930 m2) outdoor terrace. Also, its indoor gym features mahogany cabinets. The tower is connected to the James L. Knight Center by a pedestrian walkway and on the first floor is a retail spine covered with green marble. The tower contains 1,160,000 sq ft (108,000 m2) with 503,000 sq ft (46,700 m2) of office space and a 535,000 sq ft (49,700 m2), 1,500 space parking garage.

 

The building appears during the end credits of the 1986 movie Flight Of The Navigator in an aerial shot of Miami. The very top floors can clearly be seen still under construction.

The roof of the building was the set of Gloria Estefan's 1994 video for "Turn The Beat Around". The building is also one of many featured on the backdrop of the stage on The Tonight Show.

 

On January 1, 2010, the building was renamed the Miami Tower.

This stunning panoramic view captures the Rheinschleife (Rhine bend) near Boppard, Germany, with a blanket of fog partially covering the river. The meandering curve of the Rhine river can be seen as it winds through the lush green valley, bordered by small towns and vineyards. The fog adds an ethereal quality to the scene, with sunlight breaking through to reflect off the river’s surface, creating a peaceful yet dramatic atmosphere. The Rheinschleife is a famous section of the Rhine River, known for its dramatic and scenic curves.

As many of you have noticed I haven't been posting much here-- when I can post at all I usually do it on Instagram, as I'm posting iPhone shots or old pictures I've posted here on flickr (between work and fatherhood and enjoying my spare time to read I really don't have time to scan new prints).

 

Anyways, I realized I hadn't even posted an image of my first photo book, Sunlanders. The project took about five years to do-- I traveled all over Japan over that time (not the whole time of course) shooting strange surreal places, looking for the comfortably weird, the beautifully askew, and the images I liked best have been collected here.

 

It was printed in Bolzano, Italy in August, 2016, and published by Bemojake soon after in September. This is my publisher's website where you'll see links for the book's press.

 

I do hope you'll consider purchasing the book if you like the images. All 48 pictures were darkroom prints and I really tried to make a book that no one had not only never seen of Japan but that was really novel to photography itself in its dramatic color scheme.

The letters I've received from people who have loved Sunlanders has really meant the world to me.

Endicott Arm is a stunning 30-mile-long fjord in southeastern Alaska's Tongass National Forest, famous for its dramatic scenery, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife

Wentworth Falls is a genuinely charming small village which has become a major tourist destination because of its excellent bushwalks and its large number of dramatic views across the Jamieson Valley. Its appeal lies primarily in its dramatic vistas and the simple fact that it is not nearly as crowded and overtly touristy as Katoomba or Leura which are the next two towns as the visitor rises up the mountains.

 

Location

Wentworth Falls is 867 metres above sea level and 95 km from Sydney via the Great Western Highway.

Origin of Name

When William Cox was building the road across the Blue Mountains in 1815 he constructed a supply depot at the present site of Wentworth Falls. He called it "The Weatherboard" and amusingly the settlement continued to use that name until 1879 when the name was officially changed to Wentworth Falls. It was named after William Charles Wentworth who, along with Blaxland and Lawson, was the first European to cross the mountains in 1813.

The Lysefjord lighthouse is a landmark in the Lysefjord, a popular fjord in south-western Norway, known for its dramatic cliffs and iconic Preikestolen rock. The fjord itself is a 26 miles long waterway with vertical rock walls plunging over 1,100 yards into the water. The lighthouse, a beacon during the summer months, stands as a testament to the fjord's natural beauty and its importance as a tourist destination.

I was fortunate to have had the chance to drive through a lot of scenic landscapes during this assignment. I chose this one for my final image, partly for its dramatic starkness. Also, because I was pleased at getting a bit of contrasting foreground, which helps give a sense of scale, &also with the focus at the different distances. It's also different for me, as the first landscape I've ever done without any sky. (Thank you, Liz, for opening up that possibility in our group discussion.)

This is one of the shots I'm considering for an exhibit at the Durango Art Center, for images inspired by the landscapes of the Southwest. The Exhibit will be called "Survival (Not) Mandatory."

Kirkjufell, or 'Church Mountain', is a distinctly shaped peak found on the north shore of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, only a short distance away from the town of Grundarfjörður. It is often called ‘the most photographed mountain in Iceland’ due to its dramatic formation and perfect coastal location.

Kirkjufellsfoss is along the Kirkjufellsá river, which runs from a volcano called Helgrindur. Kirkjufell, or 'Church Mountain', is a distinctly shaped peak found on the north shore of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, only a short distance away from the town of Grundarfjörður. Palo Duro Canyon has been named "The Grand Canyon of Texas" both for its size and for its dramatic geological features, including the multicolored layers of rock and steep mesa walls, which are similar to those in the Grand Canyon. It is part of Palo Duro Canyon State Park. The State Park had 442,242 visitors in 2022.

Elsie Stephen Meighen - born January 22, 1872, Perth, Ontario - and Robert Wilson Reford - born in 1867, Montreal - got married on June 12, 1894.

 

Elsie Reford was a pioneer of Canadian horticulture, creating one of the largest private gardens in Canada on her estate, Estevan Lodge in eastern Québec. Located in Grand-Métis on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, her gardens have been open to the public since 1962 and operate under the name Les Jardins de Métis and Reford Gardens.

  

Born January 22, 1872 at Perth, Ontario, Elsie Reford was the eldest of three children born to Robert Meighen and Elsie Stephen. Coming from modest backgrounds themselves, Elsie’s parents ensured that their children received a good education. After being educated in Montreal, she was sent to finishing school in Dresden and Paris, returning to Montreal fluent in both German and French, and ready to take her place in society.

 

She married Robert Wilson Reford on June 12, 1894. She gave birth to two sons, Bruce in 1895 and Eric in 1900. Robert and Elsie Reford were, by many accounts, an ideal couple. In 1902, they built a house on Drummond Street in Montreal. They both loved the outdoors and they spend several weeks a year in a log cabin they built at Lac Caribou, south of Rimouski. In the autumn they hunted for caribou, deer, and ducks. They returned in winter to ski and snowshoe. Elsie Reford also liked to ride. She had learned as a girl and spent many hours riding on the slopes of Mount Royal. And of course, there was salmon-fishing – a sport at which she excelled.

 

In her day, she was known for her civic, social, and political activism. She was engaged in philanthropic activities, particularly for the Montreal Maternity Hospital and she was also the moving force behind the creation of the Women’s Canadian Club of Montreal, the first women club in Canada. She believed it important that the women become involved in debates over the great issues of the day, « something beyond the local gossip of the hour ». Her acquaintance with Lord Grey, the Governor-General of Canada from 1904 to 1911, led to her involvement in organizing, in 1908, Québec City’s tercentennial celebrations. The event was one of many to which she devoted herself in building bridges with French-Canadian community.

 

During the First World War, she joined her two sons in England and did volunteer work at the War Office, translating documents from German into English. After the war, she was active in the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Montreal Council of Social Agencies, and the National Association of Conservative Women.

 

In 1925 at the age of 53 years, Elsie Reford was operated for appendicitis and during her convalescence, her doctor counselled against fishing, fearing that she did not have the strength to return to the river.”Why not take up gardening?” he said, thinking this a more suitable pastime for a convalescent woman of a certain age. That is why she began laying out the gardens and supervising their construction. The gardens would take ten years to build, and would extend over more than twenty acres.

Lysefjorden – A Norwegian Natural Wonder

 

Location & Geography:

Lysefjorden is a breathtaking fjord in southwestern Norway, located in Rogaland County. It stretches approximately 42 kilometers (26 miles) inland from the North Sea and is known for its dramatic cliffs and deep blue waters. The fjord is about 500 meters (1,640 feet) deep at its deepest point.

 

Famous Landmarks:

Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock): One of Norway's most iconic tourist attractions, Preikestolen is a flat-topped cliff that rises 604 meters (1,982 feet) above the fjord. It offers spectacular panoramic views and attracts thousands of hikers each year.

Kjerag: Another famous cliff, Kjerag stands at 1,084 meters (3,556 feet) above the fjord. It is known for Kjeragbolten, a large boulder wedged between two cliffs, where brave visitors take daring photos. The area is also popular among BASE jumpers.

Lysebotn: At the innermost part of the fjord lies Lysebotn, a small village known for its hairpin road (Lysevegen) with 27 sharp turns, leading up to the Kjerag trailhead.

Hiking: Trails to Preikestolen and Kjerag are among Norway’s most popular hikes.

The beautiful and now tranquil setting of Augustinian Lanercost Priory belies an often troubled history. Standing close to Hadrian's Wall, it suffered frequent attacks during the long Anglo-Scottish wars, once by Robert Bruce in person. The mortally sick King Edward I rested here for five months in 1306-7, shortly before his death on his final campaign.

 

The east end of the 13th-century church survives to its full height, housing within its dramatic triple tier of arches some fine monuments.

Elsie Stephen Meighen - born January 22, 1872, Perth, Ontario - and Robert Wilson Reford - born in 1867, Montreal - got married on June 12, 1894.

Elsie Reford was a pioneer of Canadian horticulture, creating one of the largest private gardens in Canada on her estate, Estevan Lodge in eastern Québec. Located in Grand-Métis on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, her gardens have been open to the public since 1962 and operate under the name Les Jardins de Métis and Reford Gardens.

Born January 22, 1872 at Perth, Ontario, Elsie Reford was the eldest of three children born to Robert Meighen and Elsie Stephen. Coming from modest backgrounds themselves, Elsie’s parents ensured that their children received a good education. After being educated in Montreal, she was sent to finishing school in Dresden and Paris, returning to Montreal fluent in both German and French, and ready to take her place in society.

She married Robert Wilson Reford on June 12, 1894. She gave birth to two sons, Bruce in 1895 and Eric in 1900. Robert and Elsie Reford were, by many accounts, an ideal couple. In 1902, they built a house on Drummond Street in Montreal. They both loved the outdoors and they spend several weeks a year in a log cabin they built at Lac Caribou, south of Rimouski. In the autumn they hunted for caribou, deer, and ducks. They returned in winter to ski and snowshoe. Elsie Reford also liked to ride. She had learned as a girl and spent many hours riding on the slopes of Mount Royal. And of course, there was salmon-fishing – a sport at which she excelled.

In her day, she was known for her civic, social, and political activism. She was engaged in philanthropic activities, particularly for the Montreal Maternity Hospital and she was also the moving force behind the creation of the Women’s Canadian Club of Montreal, the first women club in Canada. She believed it important that the women become involved in debates over the great issues of the day, « something beyond the local gossip of the hour ». Her acquaintance with Lord Grey, the Governor-General of Canada from 1904 to 1911, led to her involvement in organizing, in 1908, Québec City’s tercentennial celebrations. The event was one of many to which she devoted herself in building bridges with French-Canadian community.

During the First World War, she joined her two sons in England and did volunteer work at the War Office, translating documents from German into English. After the war, she was active in the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Montreal Council of Social Agencies, and the National Association of Conservative Women.

The site was chosen because of its proximity to a salmon river and its dramatic views – not for the quality of the soil.

To counter-act nature’s deficiencies, she created soil for each of the plants she had selected, bringing peat and sand from nearby farms. This exchange was fortuitous to the local farmers, suffering through the Great Depression. Then, as now, the gardens provided much-needed work to an area with high unemployment. Elsie Reford’s genius as a gardener was born of the knowledge she developed of the needs of plants. Over the course of her long life, she became an expert plantsman. By the end of her life, Elsie Reford was able to counsel other gardeners, writing in the journals of the Royal Horticultural Society and the North American Lily Society. Elsie Reford was not a landscape architect and had no training of any kind as a garden designer. While she collected and appreciated art, she claimed no talents as an artist.

Bojohagur Duanasir II) is the southeasternmost major peak of the Batura Muztagh, a subrange of the Karakoram range. It lies about 10 km (6.2 mi) northeast of the Karimabad, a town on the Karakoram Highway in the Hunza Valley, part of the Gilgit District of Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan.

  

Notable features and climbing history[edit]

While not one of the highest peaks of the Karakoram, Ultar Sar is notable for its dramatic rise above local terrain. Its south flank rises over 5,300 metres (17,388 feet) above the Hunza River near Karimabad, in only about 10 km (6.2 mi) of horizontal distance. Combined with its strategic position at the end of the Batura Muztagh, with the Hunza River bending around it, this makes Ultar a visually striking peak.

  

Ultar Sar also gained fame in the 1990s as supposedly the world's highest unclimbed independent peak. This was incorrect, as Gangkhar Puensum in Bhutan is higher, and remains unclimbed (and off-limits) in 2007. (Two other higher peaks are also reputedly unclimbed and of independent stature.) However that perception did add to the appeal of the peak, and a number of expeditions attempted to climb it. During the 1980s and 1990s over 15 expeditions made attempts, resulting in no success, but in a number of fatalities; the peak proved to be quite difficult.

  

The first two ascents were made in July 1996 by two separate Japanese expeditions, the first (from the Tokai section of the Japanese Alpine Club) led by Akito Yamazaki (who summitted, but died on the descent[2]) and the second led by Ken Takahashi. The first summit team comprised Yamazaki and Kiyoshi Matsuoka (who died one year later on the nearby peak Bublimotin). They climbed the peak from the southwest in alpine style, doing much of the climbing at night to avoid danger from falling rock and ice. After their successful summit, they faced strong storms and bivouaced several days without food before returning to basecamp. However, Akihito Yamazaki died at basecamp of an internal disease due to the severe stress of climbing.

  

The second summit team comprised Takahashi and four others: Masayuki Ando, Ryushi Hoshino, Wataru Saito, and Nobuo Tsutsumi. They climbed the south ridge. Since 1996, there have been no recorded ascents of the peak.

  

Nearby summits and glaciers[edit]

Ultar Sar is the east end of a short, somewhat level ridge, the west end of which is a peak called Bojahagur Duanasir (7,329 m/24,045 ft), climbed in 1984 by a Japanese party. To the northwest of both peaks is the huge pyramid of Shispare (7,611 m/24,970 ft). Along the southwest ridge of the massif are Hunza Peak and the striking rock spire of Bublimotin (Ladyfinger Peak). The glaciers draining the slopes of the massif are (clockwise from north): the Ghulkin Glacier, the Gulmit Glacier, the Ahmad Abad Glacier, the Ultar Glacier, and the Hasanabad Glacier. The roof of the building was the set of Gloria Estefan's 1994 video for "Turn The Beat Around". The building is also one of many featured on the backdrop of the stage on The Tonight Show.

 

On January 1, 2010, the building was renamed the Miami Tower.

The Mount Washington Cog Railway is one of the world’s great rail adventures, and an exhilarating journey through history, technology and nature. This first-in-the-world mountain climbing cog railway has been making its dramatic three-hour round trip to the summit of the highest peak in the Northeast (6288’) since 1869. The Miami Tower is a 47-story, landmark office skyscraper in Miami, Florida, United States. It is located in central Downtown. It is currently the 8th tallest building in Miami and Florida. On April 18, 2012, the AIA's Florida Chapter placed it on its list of Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places as the Bank of America Tower.

 

Built for CenTrust Bank in 1987, the 47-story building ranks in the top ten tallest skyscrapers in Miami and in Florida at a height of 625 feet (191 m) and is known for its elaborate night-time illuminations and its dramatic three glass tiers. Designed by the Pei Cobb Freed & Partners architectural firm, the tower consists of two separate structures: A 10-story parking garage owned by the city and the 47-story office tower built upon the air rights of the garage. Preliminary planning for the tower began in February 1980; construction on the garage began by November. The garage was completed in February 1983 and the tower began construction a year later. In her day, she was known for her civic, social, and political activism. She was engaged in philanthropic activities, particularly for the Montreal Maternity Hospital and she was also the moving force behind the creation of the Women’s Canadian Club of Montreal, the first women club in Canada. She believed it important that the women become involved in debates over the great issues of the day, « something beyond the local gossip of the hour ». Her acquaintance with Lord Grey, the Governor-General of Canada from 1904 to 1911, led to her involvement in organizing, in 1908, Québec City’s tercentennial celebrations. The event was one of many to which she devoted herself in building bridges with French-Canadian community.

 

During the First World War, she joined her two sons in England and did volunteer work at the War Office, translating documents from German into English. After our time in Barcelona, we traveled north to Basque Country to explore its dramatic Atlantic coastline and rugged mountainous landscapes. We stayed at the charming Eguzki B&B, hosted by the warm and welcoming Sally and Rober. While Barcelona had blessed us with amazing weather, the rain greeted us upon arriving in Basque Country. Fortunately, Sally recommended a beautiful beach grove near our accommodation, which turned out to be ideal for photography, even on a rainy day.

 

I've always wanted to try woodland photography, but where I live, there aren't any gnarly trees to spark inspiration. The humid climate of this region kept everything lush, even in October. I was captivated by the vibrant green moss draping the trees, contrasting beautifully with the orange foliage carpeting the ground. We spent over two hours capturing shots in the grove, and I could have easily stayed longer— there were endless compositions waiting to be discovered. Eventually, we tore ourselves away and treated ourselves to some warm, delicious food, a perfect way to end the day.

Kirkjufell, or 'Church Mountain', is a distinctly shaped peak found on the north shore of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, only a short distance away from the town of Grundarfjörður. It is often called ‘the most photographed mountain in Iceland’ due to its dramatic formation and perfect coastal location.

The Hanging Houses, or Casas Colgadas, are a prime example of medieval Spanish architecture and ingenuity. Their origins date back to the 14th and 15th centuries, although some historians suggest there may have been structures on the site even earlier. These houses were part of the fortified city of Cuenca, which was established during the Islamic period and later became a prominent Christian stronghold after the Reconquista.

Purpose and Design

The Casas Colgadas were constructed to maximize space within the walled city. Perched on the edge of the Huécar River gorge, they demonstrate a creative solution to the challenge of limited land. The houses feature:

•Cantilevered wooden balconies: These extend dramatically over the cliff edge, offering breathtaking views of the gorge below.

•Stone facades: Designed to blend harmoniously with the natural rock of the cliff.

•Multi-story layouts: Maximizing living and storage space in a compact footprint.

While many of the original hanging houses have been lost over time due to erosion and neglect, the remaining structures were carefully preserved and restored in the 20th century.

Historical Importance

•Medieval Heritage: Cuenca's historic center, including the Hanging Houses, has been recognized for its exceptional cultural value. In 1996, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

America’s western edge is famous for its dramatic Pacific coastline dotted with sea stacks. These tall, isolated rock formations that appear to rise from the ocean are actually remnants of a coastline that has eroded over millions of years. With the softer soils washing away what became exposed out of the land with the cooled remains of volcanic lava vents. The formations are scattered along the coast from Washington to northern California as solo individuals or small groups. I enjoy working with the small grouping as even a small change in perspective can create whole new compositions. Add the changing light and weather and the image possibilities are endless.

The Miami Tower is a 47-story, landmark office skyscraper in Miami, Florida, United States. It is located in central Downtown. It is currently the 8th tallest building in Miami and Florida. On April 18, 2012, the AIA's Florida Chapter placed it on its list of Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places as the Bank of America Tower.

 

Built for CenTrust Bank in 1987, the 47-story building ranks in the top ten tallest skyscrapers in Miami and in Florida at a height of 625 feet (191 m) and is known for its elaborate night-time illuminations and its dramatic three glass tiers. Designed by the Pei Cobb Freed & Partners architectural firm, the tower consists of two separate structures: A 10-story parking garage owned by the city and the 47-story office tower built upon the air rights of the garage. Preliminary planning for the tower began in February 1980; construction on the garage began by November. The garage was completed in February 1983 and the tower began construction a year later. On August 1984, while the tower was under construction, a 5-alarm fire began on the ninth floor; construction was subsequently delayed for several weeks. On December 15, 1985, the tower was lit for the first time in Miami Dolphins aqua and snowflakes.

 

By mid-1986, the tower's exterior was complete and the grand opening for the complex was set for early fall that same year. Due to the uneven settling of the tower's foundation to one side by several inches, and the resulting misalignment of the tower's elevator rails, the grand opening for the complex was delayed until February 1987. The complete complex featured the world's only elevated metro station in a skyscraper (Knight Center station). It also gained notoriety for its luxurious interiors, including a skylobby on the 11th floor covered in marble and gold and a 10,000 sq ft (930 m2) outdoor terrace. Also its indoor gym features mahogany cabinets. The tower is connected to the James L. Knight Center by a pedestrian walkway and on the first floor is a retail spine covered with green marble. The tower contains 1,160,000 sq ft (108,000 m2) with 503,000 sq ft (46,700 m2) of office space and a 535,000 sq ft (49,700 m2), 1,500 space parking garage.

 

The building appears during the end credits of the 1986 movie Flight Of The Navigator in an aerial shot of Miami. The very top floors can clearly be seen still under construction.

The roof of the building was the set of Gloria Estefan's 1994 video for "Turn The Beat Around". The building is also one of many featured on the backdrop of the stage on The Tonight Show.

 

On January 1, 2010, the building was renamed the Miami Tower.

That is why she began laying out the gardens and supervising their construction. The gardens would take ten years to build, and would extend over more than twenty acres.

Elsie Reford had to overcome many difficulties in bringing her garden to life. First among them were the allergies that sometimes left her bedridden for days on end. The second obstacle was the property itself. Estevan was first and foremost a fishing lodge. The site was chosen because of its proximity to a salmon river and its dramatic views – not for the quality of the soil.

To counter-act nature’s deficiencies, she created soil for each of the plants she had selected, bringing peat and sand from nearby farms. This exchange was fortuitous to the local farmers, suffering through the Great Depression. Then, as now, the gardens provided much-needed work to an area with high unemployment. Elsie Reford’s genius as a gardener was born of the knowledge she developed of the needs of plants. Over the course of her long life, she became an expert plantsman. By the end of her life, Elsie Reford was able to counsel other gardeners, writing in the journals of the Royal Horticultural Society and the North American Lily Society. Elsie Reford was not a landscape architect and had no training of any kind as a garden designer. While she collected and appreciated art, she claimed no talents as an artist.

Elsie Stephen Reford died at her Drummond Street home on November 8, 1967 in her ninety-sixth year.

In 1995, the Reford Gardens ("Jardins de Métis") in Grand-Métis were designated a National Historic Site of Canada, as being an excellent Canadian example of the English-inspired garden.(Wikipedia)

Created by Elsie Reford between 1926 and 1958, these gardens are an inspired example of the English art of the garden. Woven into a natural setting, a series of gardens display perennials, trees and shrubs. A crab-apple orchard, a rock garden, and the Long Walk are also the legacy of this dedicated horticulturist. A microclimate favours the growth of species found nowhere else in Canada, while the stream and winding paths add to the charm. Elsie Reford’s beloved blue poppies and lilies still bloom and contribute, with other exotic and indigenous plants, to the harmony of the site.

Skógafoss is a prominent waterfall located along the Skógaá River in southern Iceland, renowned for its dramatic 60-meter (197-foot) drop and 25-meter (82-foot) width, ranking among the country's largest and most visually striking cascades. Fed by meltwater from the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, the falls originate in the highlands and flow through a series of upstream cascades before reaching this main drop, which erodes a geological layer known as a "waterfall terrace" formed by ancient sea cliffs. The surrounding area is designated as a protected nature reserve by the Icelandic Environment Agency, preserving its basalt cliffs, birdlife, and riparian ecosystem, including a population of Atlantic salmon and Arctic char in the river below that supports seasonal fishing from July to October. A longstanding local legend associates Skógafoss with Viking settler Þrasi Þórólfsson, who purportedly hid a chest of gold and treasures behind the falls in the 10th century; attempts to retrieve it reportedly yielded only a single ring, now displayed at the nearby Skógar Museum. The site's accessibility along Iceland's Ring Road (Route 1) makes it a major tourist attraction, where frequent rainbows appear in the mist from the powerful spray, and a metal staircase with 527 steps provides views from the top, though strong winds and wet conditions require caution.

Location and Physical Features

Skógafoss is situated in the village of Skógar in southern Iceland, along the course of the Skógá River. Its precise coordinates are 63°31′55.6″N 19°30′40.1″W. This positioning places it approximately 150 kilometers southeast of Reykjavík and 30 kilometers west of Vík í Mýrdal, making it a prominent feature on Iceland's South Coast route. The waterfall features a single, powerful drop that measures 60 meters in height and 25 meters in width. It is fed by the Skógá River, which originates primarily from meltwater of the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers before flowing southward into the Atlantic Ocean. The river's path through the region contributes to the waterfall's consistent volume, particularly during summer melt seasons. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dramatic cliffs that form a natural boundary between the coastal lowlands and the Icelandic Highlands. The forceful descent of water generates a perpetual mist at the base, often producing vivid rainbows on clear days due to the spray interacting with sunlight. These cliffs mark the site of an ancient coastline, now approximately 5 kilometers inland as a result of post-glacial geological uplift.

Geological Origins and Formation

Skógafoss formed where the Skógá River descends over ancient sea cliffs composed of hard basalt, marking the edge of the volcanic plateaus associated with Eyjafjallajökull and Katla volcanoes. These basalt cliffs originated from successive lava flows during Iceland's intense volcanic activity, driven by the island's location astride the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a divergent plate boundary where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart at a rate of about 2 centimeters per year. The hexagonal basalt columns visible in the structure result from the slow cooling and contraction of molten lava, creating polygonal joints in the rock. The site's current inland position stems from post-glacial isostatic rebound following the retreat of Iceland's ice sheets at the end of the last Ice Age around 10,000 years ago, which reduced the land's depression under glacial weight and caused uplift that shifted the former coastline approximately 5 kilometers southward. This process exposed the pre-existing coastal cliffs—once eroded by Atlantic waves—as the waterfall's resistant "carrier" layer, allowing the Skógá River to carve its dramatic plunge. Ongoing erosion at Skógafoss is primarily driven by hydraulic action, where the force of falling water exploits cracks in the basalt, and abrasion from sediment-laden flows that grind the cliff face. The Nature Conservation Agency of Iceland (successor to the Icelandic Environment Agency as of January 2025) has maintained the site's designation as an area at risk of erosion since 2017, noting potential structural changes over time due to these natural processes. In 2024, additional infrastructure such as reinforced trails and fencing was installed to reduce tourist-induced erosion impacts on the geological features. Additionally, the nearby Eyjafjallajökull volcano influences the geology, with ash layers from its 2010 eruption deposited across the region, illustrating the interplay of subaerial and fluvial erosion on volcanic materials
