Katz's Delicatessen on the Lower East Side was established in 1888. It's famous for its #jewish deli #food including its cured corned beef and pastrami. They go through several thousand pounds of#pastrami each week. The interior and #vintage #neonsign are original. Their slogan "Send a Salami to your boy in the Army" started during World War II. This #handpaintedsign is located on the Ludlow street side of the #storefront. “Ex Oriente Lux : Govan Crepusculum”
Heaven’s peaceful eye, rising, faithfully, effortlessly, paints its ephemeral pastel chef d’oeuvre as wispy clouds float across its crepuscular creation on a stiff morning breeze. At Fahrenheit 32 - on the cusp of stasis - opaline snow, slowly, still, steadily recedes to reveal the forlorn landscape as it has and will for millennia past and future. And though winter is a stubborn old man, she breaks his frozen fingers to thaw her earth by day only to let him reclaim his icy grip upon her orb overnight wreaking havoc on the vulnerable infrastructure of this venerable railroad forever known as the “CW” (Central Washington Railroad). At MP82, just a few jointed-rail-sticks west of the ghost town of Govan (elevator in the right background), Engineer Jerry Miller helms Eastern Washington Gateway’s HM02-2 as it undulates the contour of the steppe-like topography, like the sun, rising and descending ad infinitum the train begins its increasing to 1% corniche drop into Rattlesnake Gulch along Jarchow and Bender Lake, crossing Childers and Corbett Draw all the while dwindling the few miles to the next hamlet of Almira at a comfortable twenty some-odd miles per turn of the hand with thirty-in-tow “mtys” destined for the waiting grain spouts and the hardy men that man them twenty-four more miles down-the-line at end-of-the-line Coulee City where Jerry and his Conductor F. M. Simon, calling it a day’s work, will tie down and tie up. (03Mar17 ©)

Yoken's Restaurant in Portsmouth, NH has an amazing #neonsign that was originally manufactured by C.I. Brink of Boston, MA in 1949. Although the restaurant closed in 2004, the #neon #sign was saved and later refurbished at a cost of $50,000 and reinstalled by the Portsmouth Sign Co. Of Newington, NH in May 2015. Although we took of a photo of this beauty during the day, it does light up in 4 different colors and is animated with the 🐳whales' tail and fins moving and even it's spout spewing water 💦! Small mom-and-pop businesses are the very soul of the Lower East Side and Chinatown. In the jostle of NYC's commercial “battlefield”, these establishments often compete with louder, brasher, and more exuberant storefront and storefront signage design, much of it a vernacular art. The event features speakers Thomas Rinaldi, author of New York Neon, and James and Karla Murray, authors of Store Front II: A History Preserved, New York Nights, and Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York. Their beautifully illustrated lectures will explore the history and aesthetics of mom-and-pop signage and storefronts in these most iconic neighborhoods. Signed copies of the authors’ books will be available for purchase.

...you can visit Delmonico's in the Financial District, which was established in 1837 by brothers John and Peter Delmonico. The 3 1/2 story building it occupies was built by the brothers at a cost of $360,000 with an entrance featuring marble pillars imported from Pompeii. Delmonico's was the first restaurant in the U.S. to offer fine dining and became the birthplace of many signature dishes including the "Delmonico Steak," a boneless rib eye that is considered the best steak cut. The Baked Alaska dessert was created at Delmonico's to celebrate the purchase of Alaska from Russia 🇷🇺 in 1867. Delmonico's has also served a long line of U.S. Presidents including Martin van Buren, Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. From now until Tuesday, November 8th, they are serving a special Presidential Palates Menu of a la carte #presidential hits. The current owner told us that this #neon #sign was installed in the 1950s by Billy, the founder of this #liquor 🍸🍺store. We got word that the original #vintage #neonsign has been removed by the owner, Al Collazo, who has owned the store since 1984. Once an old-school #pharmacy complete with soda fountain counter, it operates as a #diner with a separate #drug store adjacent to it. Collazo sold the #prescription side of the business to CVS in 2014 so it is possible that they decided the #signage no longer fit with their branding.
