El iPod de Saritah

meu novo iPod touch, breve iPhone . . .

I had heard about these iPod vending machines a while ago, but always thought it was a Manhattan or Los Angeles kind of thing. Then one day as we were walking into our local neighborhood grocery store here in Parker, CO I saw that we too had one. They're pretty cool actually, and I've since seen this machine used for other products now too (i.e. soda machines).

In place of sliding dollars into a slot, you swipe your card on the side of the machine. In place of pressing little alpha-numeric buttons, you interact with a 12-inch touchscreen. In place of spinning coils that lurch your product off the edge, there's a high-speed robotic arm that slides out to grab your selection. In place of plummeting to a resounding thud, the robot arm returns your merchandise swiftly and gently to a large opening located under the screen. In place of contorting your wrist to fit under the self closing gate, you slide the cover to the slot open and remove your newly purchased goodies.

You couldn't have nailed all the flaws with most existing vending machines any better.

In the case of the iPod vending machine, there's more than just the iPod available. You might choose an iPod Nano and some protective covering. You might choose an iPod Video with an extra charger. You might pick up a car adapter for power or audio. You might choose standalone speaker systems, AV cables, or even an Airport Express.

Very cool.

Some of the pieces can be seen moving at 3-4 km per second!

This managed to destroy a large portion of my highspeed setup...

The shockwave managed to shatter every piece of metal, the only "surviving" part was the harddrive chasis, mangled as it was.

---------------

Off camera lighting was achieved using a home-brew ultra high speed flash unit which operates on the order of 1/2,000,000th of a second (1/2 microsecond). The flash unit was synchronized to the debris cloud as it broke a laser beam which passed over the top of the ipod via my home-brew triggering system.

My coworker Jessica's 4th gen iPod finally gave out, after years of faithful service. She has the brilliant idea to head out on our lunch break and give the iPod a proper funeral. I went along to help out.

But zombie iPod doesn't want to stay in the ground!

I got one of those new iPod Shuffles last week and I am impressed with the size of the thing and the fidelity of the sound given just how tiny it is - it can hold around 1000 songs!

Apparently there has been a bit of a hooha on the internet about Apple abolishing the controls and sticking an inline 'thumb-remote' on the headphones but after a couple of minutes I found it quite intuitive pressing the button twice to change tracks or three times to step back. The technology is nothing new, resistive multiplexors as they are called have been around in remotes since the days of cassette players (My 7 year-old daughter Ella asked me the other day what a cassette was!)

There's a neat little feature that when you hold down the button on the remote for a few seconds a pre-recorded digital voice tells you the name of the artist and track - this makes up for the lack of display and is in keeping with the new wave of design and engineering that says strip it back as far as you can go. Its in these disciplined and self-imposed limitations that designers are finding freedom from unlimited choice. You can also see this phenomena happening with Nintendo (with their new DSi) and Twitter (160 characters). Boundaries force people to think creatively which is the reason I set up the Flickr group bit.ly/1bwf where the artist must only take 10 minutes to capture the essence of what they are drawing.

The tide of miniaturisation is inevitable and the advent of Apples inline remote removes the one limitation on size that they had with the previous generation of iPod shuffles - buttons were required to change tracks. What's to follow are smaller and smaller iPods until, like their musical kinder, iPod will eventually become an intangible idea. The Apple logo will be laser etched on to our ears and we will be able to change tracks with a blink.

iPod 4 gen with Harman Kardon Aura

I bought a 40GB iPod about four years ago using a substantial number of Apple gift cards that I had been collecting from friends and family. It was the 3rd generation black and white model and I bought it right before they released the iPod Photo. It died from hard drive failure and was replaced under Apple Care. The replacement was replaced for the same reason and so was the replacement's replacement.

I decided last summer when my fourth iPod started flaking out on me again, that I would replace it with an iPod Touch as soon as they released a 64GB version. I was quite disappointed when Apple didn't release one last fall, but I was thrilled when they released one last week. I debated ordering one for a full 5 minutes before clicking send. It took me longer to figure out what to get engraved on the back.

Your iPod Touch will thank you for the cushy new home. This is a mango juice box.

The velvet lining makes it very smooth and provides some extra padding for protection. Wouldn't want to drop it, but I suspect it's more protected than the average silicone boot protector, or hard plastic sleeve.

this is a pic that i got frm photobucket... these are the colors of the ipods ive been through... lol

iPod touch back and dirty

New applications just came to my iPod touch!

I've had my ipod since 2005 and I've used it every summer since then at the family reunion to start a dance session. I'm usually the dj but this year, everyone got their ipod out and the whole thing turned into an ipod battle.

This is my current collection of iPods. I am still missing the 2nd & 5th generation classics, and all the iPod Touches.
