Ionic temple dedicated to Athena, Poseidon, Erechtheus, and other chthonic deities of Attica, 421-406 B.C.
Planting the camera dead center and tipping it back just slightly turns this facade into a textbook study in symmetry — every element pairs off across an invisible vertical axis. The giant order of Ionic pilasters climbs two full stories through the central bay, carrying the eye straight up to the pediment and the carved cartouche set into its tympanum. The rough-faced limestone ashlar gives the whole front a weight and texture that the crisp dressed-stone trim plays against.
That deep, near-cobalt sky is doing real work here. Shooting on a clear day with the sun raking across the stone deepens every shadow line in the pilaster capitals and the pediment's stepped molding, and the saturated blue throws the pale facade forward off the picture plane. The arched fanlight doorway anchors the base, flanked by two classical statues tucked into niches and a pair of lamp standards.
Architect Bryant Fleming designed Cheekwood in the late 1920s as a Georgian-style country estate, and this elevation shows the more formal, civic face of that vocabulary. Framing it head-on, with nothing but sky behind, treats the building as a freestanding object — pure composition rather than house-in-a-landscape.

This is a study of an Ionic order pillar that has the Greek Key pattern running along the architrave. I drew this while I was researching Greek keys and its origins in my A2 Art & Design Course. In art and architecture, a meander or meandros is a decorative border constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a repeated pattern this design is also known as the ‘Greek key’ design. The name ‘meander’ comes from the twisting and turning path of the Maeander River in Asia Minor. The meander also looks like a basic labyrinth and among some Italians; these patterns are known as Greek Lines. The Greek key pattern reminded me a bit of op-art (optical art) because of its continuous repetition so I then began to look at impossible objects and the works of Hungarian artist Istvan Orosz
