This is a study of an Ionic order pillar that has the Greek Key pattern running along the architrave. I drew this while I was researching Greek keys and its origins in my A2 Art & Design Course. In art and architecture, a meander or meandros is a decorative border constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a repeated pattern this design is also known as the ‘Greek key’ design. The name ‘meander’ comes from the twisting and turning path of the Maeander River in Asia Minor. The meander also looks like a basic labyrinth and among some Italians; these patterns are known as Greek Lines. The Greek key pattern reminded me a bit of op-art (optical art) because of its continuous repetition so I then began to look at impossible objects and the works of Hungarian artist Istvan Orosz

The Ionic Colonnade at Princeton Battlefield State Park was designed by Thomas U. Walter, the architect of the US Capitol Building. This colonnade was actually once the portico of a house. The colonnade was relocated to this spot to mark the final resting place of 15 unidentified American and 21 unidentified British soldiers killed in the Battle of Princeton on January 3, 1777.
