This white marble temple is dedicated to Athena, the gardian goddess of Athens, bringing victory (Nike).

It is the smallest tempel to be found on the Acropolis.

The temple was erected in the 5th century BC at the height of the classical period of Greek architecture. The small temple is one of the most beautiful examples of architecture built in Ionic order.

The temple is situated on the edge of the steep rock of the Acropolis, with the city of Athens at its feet and the Aegean Sea in the distance....

The Ionic order is one of the three canonic orders of classical architecture, the other two being the Doric and the Corinthian. There are two lesser orders: the Tuscan (a plainer Doric), and the rich variant of Corinthian called the composite order. The ancient architect and architectural historian Vitruvius associates the Ionic with feminine proportions (the Doric representing the masculine)

B&W or color... for me, it works either way, but this seemed best... the forum lies at the south end of the long 850 m (1/2 mi) colonnaded avenue. It's big! 90 m (295 ft) x 80 m (262 ft) and there are what looks like two alters and a fountain within... the whole area is smooth and worn stone paved and there are very nice raised sidewalks on both sides of the ionic (I think) pillars most of which must have been re-erected. Gerasa was heavily damaged by three severe earthquakes in 363, 749 and 1033 CE (which by the way, doesn't make me feel great living just south of here in Amman).

Nevertheless, the structure is a joy to see and sit within and wonder about... Gerasa was an incredibly advanced City in its time for many hundreds of years... once again kudos to the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities... they do great work...
