A rather splendid Ionic order column. Have I just come back from Rome or Greece? Err no, this is the entrance to the Junior Library in Lancaster. I don't think you'll see a finer set of Ionic volutes!
There's not a lot of good Ionian columns in Lancaster - plenty of plain Doric style and a lot of Ionian/Corinthian 'composite' style - these have the volutes of the Ionian order but at 45-degrees to the entablature combined with the acanthus leaf decoration of the Corinthian order. Check out Lancaster Town Hall or the old Customs House (Maritime Museum) for examples of this.
Also here we have some fine flutings and the egg-and-dart motif between the volutes, on the abacus, and on the frieze above.

Summary: Ionic temple situated at the north-east border of the religious sanctuary of the city.
Date: ca. 475 BC
Dimensions:
The maximum dimensions of the foundations measure ca. 17.90 m. x 41.60 m. An axial mass for the temple of 14.75 m. x 38.40 m. is proposed. The excavators suggest that the island ionic/attic foot of 29.4 cm. was the unit of measurement used throughout, resulting in overall dimensions for the temple of 50 x 130 F. The maximum width of the cella building measures ca. 8.12 m. The column height is estimated at between 5.97 m. and 6.25 m., with a lower column diameter of 67.6 cm. - 70.8 cm. Thus, the proportion of lower column diameter:column height = 9:1. The relationship of the lower column diameter to the interaxial spacing is expressed in the proportion 1:3, resulting in a distance of ca. 2.0 m. - 2.10 m., or 6 7/8 F. The three central intercolumniations were widened at the facade to 7 9/16 F.

Plan: Very little is preserved of the temple in situ: the SW corner and parts of the southern and western foundations of the cella, and the lowest foundation block of the NW corner. However, the excavators suggest the following plan on the basis of a reconstruction of the dimensions of the foundations: the temple was peripteral, and was extremely long and narrow with the unusual number of 8 x 20 columns. The temple was pseudodipteral, with wide ptera. The cella building was very simple, consisting of a naos and elongated pronaos, with no columns in the pronaos, no antae, and neither opisthodomos nor adyton. The pronaos was not open for its entire width, but was apparently entered through a door, lending a megaron-like aspect to the cella building. There were no columns inside the cella. The cella building was aligned with the third column along the flanks of the peristasis.
Date Description:
The building period of the foundations cannot be later than ca. 475 B.C., based on ceramic evidence from the excavations. The style of the architectural moldings, for example the concave leaves of the palmettes in the frieze, accords with this date.
History:
Unlike the other major temples in the sanctuary at Metapontum, the Ionic temple had only one building phase, with the foundations, peristyle and cella built in smooth succession. The building was constructed towards the end of the first quarter of the fifth century B.C. Fragments of terracotta acroteria appear later in date, and indicate that restorations were carried out. Ceramic evidence indicates that the temple was destroyed in the third century B.C.; shortly thereafter, most of the stones were removed for reuse elsewhere, and the foundations were filled in with debris, including some of the architectural elements of the superstructure.
Other Notes:
The temple presents a number of unusual features. The combination of an architrave, molded frieze, dentils, geison and sima does not conform to the canonical Ionic system of epistyle, dentils, geison and sima prevalent at this time in Asia Minor. The elongation of the plan, and the pseudodipteral effect created by the narrow cella, at first appear to presage developments in Ionic temple architecture of the Hellenistic period, for example at the Temple of Apollo at Didyma. Features such as wide ptera and unusual groundplans containing large numbers of columns, however, are already familiar in archaic Doric temple architecture in South Italy and Sicily, for example at the Basilica at Paestum. With respect to its groundplan, the Ionic temple at Metapontum can be viewed as standing at the end of archaic temple development in South Italy, especially through the inclusion of the long, narrow cella. The appearance of the Ionic order, however, is striking and attests to the native architect's desire for architectural experimentation, combined with the love of vivid ornament characteristic of South Italian temple architecture.

The Ceremony of the Horngarth or Planting of the Penny Hedge
Every year at 9 am. on the eve of Ascension Day the ceremony of the Horngarth, or the Planting of the Penny Hedge, takes place in Whitby’s upper harbour on the east bank of the River Esk.
The ceremony is performed under the supervision of the Bailiff of the Manor of Fyling. The hedge is constructed with 9 upright hazel stakes driven into the mud with an ancient mallet, 9 ‘yethers’ or pliant branches for intertwining, and is braced at each end with ‘strout-stowers’. There is a brushwood infill around the lower part of the stakes. Completion of the hedge is followed by 3 blasts on the ram’s horn, then a cry of “out on ye” repeated 3 times by the Bailiff. It must be strong enough to stand three tides.

From the 4th of June until July the 4th the artist Ben Edge and the Museum of British Folklore are collaborating for an exhibition titled ‘Ritual Britain’ In which Ben’s series of twenty paintings and documentary film titled ‘Frontline Folklore’ Will go on display alongside Simon Costin’s iconic MOBF collection. There will be events running throughout the exhibition that include talks and film showings.

The ancient parish of St Pancras once stretched almost from Oxford Street to Highgate. By the early 1800s the original parish church had become neglected. The local population had declined, while the population in southern part of the parish had grown rapidly. A new church was needed to serve the newly built up areas surrounding Euston Square
After a competition involving thirty or so tenders, designs by the local architect William Inwood, in collaboration with his son Henry William Inwood, were accepted. The builder was Isaac Seabrook.
The first stone was laid by the Duke of York at a ceremony on 1 July 1819. It was carved with a Greek inscription, of which the English translation is, “May the light of the blessed Gospel thus ever illuminate the dark temples of the Heathen.”
The church was consecrated by the Bishop of London on 7 May 1822, and the sermon was preached by the vicar of St Pancras, James Moore.
The total cost of the building, including land and furnishings, was £76,679, making it the most expensive church to be built in London since the rebuilding of St Paul’s Cathedral. It was designed to seat 2,500 people.
The church has a Grade I listing from English Heritage, as an important early example of the Greek Revival architecture. It is mostly built from brick, faced with Portland stone. The portico and the tower are entirely of stone. All the external decoration, including the capitals of the columns, is of terracotta.
The Inwoods drew on two ancient Greek monuments for their inspiration – the Erechtheum and the Tower of the Winds, both on the Acropolis in Athens.
Henry William Inwood was in Athens at the time that the plans for St Pancras were accepted, and he brought back to England plaster casts of details of the Erechtheum, and some excavated fragments.
The pillars at the west end of the church are Ionic in style. The octagonal tower, modelled on the Tower of the Winds, also influences the shape of the domed central vestibule. The church’s most celebrated features are the two sets of caryatids that stand above the north and south entrances to the Crypt. Unlike the original figures on the Acropolis, each of the St Pancras caryatids holds an extinguished torch or an empty jug, reflecting their position as guardians of the dead.
The caryatids are made of terracotta, constructed in sections around cast-iron columns, and were modelled by John Charles Felix Rossi, who provided all the terracotta on the building.

Ruins of the Sanctuary of Athena in the ancient Hellenistic city of Priene, spectacularly located against a rocky outcrop.
Of the Temple the terrace with five (re-erected) Ionic columns remain, surrounded by a fascinating collection of related architectural debris. It was originally built in the 4th century BC by the architect Pythios, also responsible for the (lost) great Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Ancient Wonder of the World, situated some 100km south of here.

Banks Methodist Church near Wilton in Granville County, North Carolina was organized around 1762 when Thomas Banks from Virginia founded the church. It was originally Episcopalian in denomination but changed to Methodist during or shortly after the American Revolution. This structure was built 1909-1911 with the Sunday School Annex added in 1927. The church almost has the form of a Greek temple, rectangular with a brick foundation and pedimented gable supported by four non-fluted Ionic columns; the capitals have an egg and dart design. The porch cornice consists of vertical bands. A double-door entrance is capped by a semi-circular transom and flanked by two oval stained-glass windows. The side windows are rounded at the top.

Baird Point is located on Lake LaSalle adjacent to the University at Buffalo. Some of the best sunrises can be witnessed from this point. The building in the background is the student housing building called the Ellicott Complex . During summer, this spot hosts students in deep thought.

Description of work: The historic illustrations included in this project were originally published during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Many originally appeared in publications that predated the widespread use of photography for art documentation. These engravings, line drawings, and plans reflect both the technological and aesthetic standards of their time. By their very nature, they often represent subjective interpretations of the monuments and works depicted, and as such they offer fascinating insights into the cultural values of art and architectural history during the formative years of these disciplines. BIRTHDAY OUTING TO CHISWICK HOUSE (9/21)
The Ionic Temple in the Orange Tree Garden of Chiswick House, London, seen from the SW across the lake.
Chiswick House (including the buildings in the gardens, like the Ionic Temple here) was built in 1729 in Palladian style to designs by Lord Burlington (Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington, "the architect Earl", 1694-1753), assisted by several contemporary architects. The house was not for a home, but to house his art collections. We also visited the pioneering landscaped grounds (William Kent) with their classical-style monuments and sculptures.

"Seed money for the construction of the Capitol came in 1911 when the state collected almost $800,000 in inheritance tax from the estate of railroad magnate E.H. Harriman. The state bonded for another $2 million and legislators chose Richard Kletting's Renaissance Revival plan for a 404-foot long, 240-foot wide and 286-foot tall statehouse.
"Inside, the Capitol is divided into two wings, each lined by marble Ionic columns weighing 25,000 pounds, with the Supreme Court on the east end and the House of Representatives on the west. In the center is the 165-foot tall rotunda. The ceiling of the rotunda is beautifully painted with clouds and seagulls, paying tribute to the state bird. Twelve paintings lining the rotunda were a WPA project and painted elsewhere then attached to the walls. The paintings depict scenes from the early history of the state and its settling. Statues in the Capitol include likenesses of Brigham Young and Philo T. Farnsworth (inventor of television).

"The third floor, also known as the legislative floor, contains the chambers for both the House and Senate, along with the Supreme Court. When the building was first completed the north-east corner of this floor contained the library, which has since been relocated, and the area divided into smaller offices. At the end of the west atrium area is the entrance to the House of Representatives. The House is composed of 75 members, who serve two-year terms, and represent approximately 29,000 citizens each. During the restoration the House chamber was restored to the original paint colors and period carpets. Two 103 in (260 cm) plasma display screens were installed at the front of the chamber for voting processes and presentations, a first of its kind system in a state capitol.[19] New desks were created, based on the originals, but now allow room for modern technology such as printers and computers. The ceiling of the chamber is a large skylight, allowing natural light to illuminate the room. The chamber also features four murals painted on the rounded ceiling coves, two of which (east and west) are original to the buildings, while the other two were painted during the renovation. The east mural, entitled The Dream of Brigham Young was painted by New York artist, Vincent Aderente, and shows Young standing near the Salt Lake Temple and holding their blueprints. The east mural, entitled Discovery of the Great Salt Lake, shows Brigham Young conversing with Jim Bridger about the Great Salt Lake, and is the work of A. E. Foringer. The north mural features Utah resident, Seraph Young, voting in Utah's first election following the granting of women's suffrage in the territory. The south mural features the Engen brothers building their first Ski jump, representing the importance of outdoor recreation to the economy of Utah. The House Lounge, located directly behind the chamber, was restored to its original size and configuration, and furnished with period carpets and furniture."

Built in 1926, the Junior Building of Holmes High School was built like its predecessor, the Senior Building, in the Jacobean Revival style, based on architecture of grand manor houses and other major works of architecture from the time period of the English Renaissance. The brick building, located on the western side of the complex, features a dark red/brown brick facade with a limestone entry portico featuring extensive classical elements, including a small semi-circular juliet balcony, ionic pilasters, decorative pinnacles, arched window and door openings, and several carved decorative elements. The side entrances feature smaller porticos with similar details, but more intricate carvings that cover the tympanums, including several cartouches. The central portion of the front facade has a high parapet with limestone cresting, while the ends of the side wings feature almost solid brick walls with few windows and limestone cartouches, as well as english quoins at the corners. The building originally housed the junior high program for the Covington City School District with 42 classrooms, two sewing rooms and two domestic science rooms (home economics), two art rooms, a music room, and a gymnasium, serving the senior high school and junior high school. The building was linked with the old Holmesdale mansion next door with an enclosed breezeway when it was built, later replaced by the present administration building in 1936.
The Holmes High School campus, home to one of the oldest public high schools in Kentucky, is covered in grassy lawns and shady trees, stands at the border between the Levassor Park neighborhood to the south and the Wallace Woods neighborhood to the north, on the old Holmesdale Estate, the home of the Holmes family. In 1915, the old Holmesdale Estate, including a Gothic Revival-style victorian mansion known as the Holmesdale Castle, built in 1872, was sold to the Covington School Board as a site for a new high school to replace the overcrowded building at 12th and Russell in the Seminary Square neighborhood, which had also been built in 1872. The first school building was built in 1919 to house the Senior High School program, followed by the football stadium in 1925 and the Junior High School building in 1926, which were connected via breezeways to the former mansion, which was utilized as a cafeteria, bookstore, band room, and administration building. In 1936, the old Holmesdale Mansion was demolished for the Administration Building, which housed a cafeteria, enlarged administration facilities, and additional classrooms. In 1966, following the end of racial segregation in schools and the integration of the all-black Lincoln-Grant School with the all-white Holmes High School, the school was extended to the south with the construction of a new science building and gymnasium, which were linked with the previous structures with a raised breezeway. In 1980, a vocational building was added to the west side of the 1966 structure, bringing the campus to its present appearance and size. Originally a separate vocational school, it was merged with the high school in 2000. More recently, around the year 2000, a Postmodern-style wing linking the Administration Building and the Junior Building was constructing, mimicking the architecture of the older buildings on the campus with modern materials. Today, Holmes High School is the sole public high school serving the city of Covington, and is a major community anchor with a beautiful campus and historic charm.
Dodona (Doric Greek: Δωδώνᾱ, Dōdṓnā, Ionic and Attic Greek: Δωδώνη,[1] Dōdṓnē) in Epirus in northwestern Greece was an oracle devoted to a Mother Goddess identified at other sites with Rhea or Gaia, but here called Dione, who was joined and partly supplanted in historical times by the Greek deity Zeus.
The shrine of Dodona was regarded as the oldest Hellenic oracle, possibly dating to the second millennium BCE according to Herodotus. Situated in a remote region away from the main Greek poleis, it was considered second only to the oracle of Delphi in prestige. Priestesses and priests in the sacred grove interpreted the rustling of the oak (or beech) leaves to determine the correct actions to be taken. According to a new interpretation, the oracular sound originated from bronze objects hanging from oak branches and sounded with the wind blowing, similar to a wind chime.[2] Aristotle considered the region around Dodona to have been part of Hellas and the region where the Hellenes originated.[3] The oracle was first under the control of the Thesprotians before it passed into the hands of the Molossians.[4] It remained an important religious sanctuary until the rise of Christianity during the Late Roman era.

Built in 1901, this Hawaiian Gothic-style hotel, mixing elements of the Queen Anne, Classical Revival, Beaux Arts, and Renaissance Revival styles, was designed by Oliver G. Traphagen and built by the Lucas Brothers for Walter Chamberlain Peacock as the first large hotel on Waikiki. Expanded in 1918 with the addition of two six-story concrete wings and a large rooftop addition on the original building, the hotel has changed scale and massing considerably from its original design, but maintains its original facade, roof, and decorative trim and ornament. The first hotel on Waikiki, the Moana featured 75 guest rooms with bathrooms and telephone service, a main parlor, salon, billiard room, and library, and a main reception area on the first floor, a grand staircase, ionic fluted columns inside the main lobby, an electric elevator, and an open two-story portion of the lobby ringed by balustrades on the second floor, with the hotel being considered very modern and luxurious for its time. In 1904, a banyan tree was planted in the courtyard on the ocean side of the hotel by Jared Smith, Director of the Department of Agriculture Experiment Station, which has since grown to be 75 feet tall and 150 feet wide. The hotel proved a bit too ambitious for the investment Peacock had put into it, and it was sold to Alexander Young in 1905 after encountering financial difficulties. Following Young’s death in 1910, the building became the property of the Territorial Hotel Company, founded by Young, which expanded the hotel with two wings in 1918, but went bankrupt during the Great Depression, with ownership then coming under the Matson Navigation Company. Various famous guests stayed at the hotel over the years, including the Prince of Wales and future King Edward VIII in 1920, author Agatha Christie and her husband in 1922, and Jane Stanford, co-founder of Stanford University, whom mysteriously died of strychnine poisoning in the hotel, though her murder remains unsolved. The original building features lots of classical Ionic columns, a hipped roof with broad overhanging eaves and brackets, clapboard siding, arched openings at the lanais with fleur-de-lis motif panels between them and supported by doric columns, decorative balustrades, one-over-one double-hung windows in singles and groups. In the center of the building is a tower with oxeye windows below the main roofline, doric pilasters on the corners, a lanai on the sixth floor with arched openings and a long row of french doors, and a tall porte cochere in the center of the first and second floors of the tower with fluted ionic columns, a roofline wrapped with a decorative balustrade, and an architrave featuring festoons, dentils, and brackets. The building also features lanais on the fifth floor below the roofline with decorative columns and sawn balustrades supported by brackets and featuring decorative trim, lanais with arched openings and sawn balustrades on the ends of the fifth floor of the original side wings, large arched openings at the base of the original side wings with large windows and juliet balconies, accented with circular panels featuring fleur-de-lis motifs, and crowned with another juliet balcony supported by columns, hipped dormers, and a multi-tier lanai on the rear of the building facing the ocean. The hotel was expanded with two Renaissance Revival-style six-story wings on either side in 1918, which featured concrete construction and stucco-clad exteriors with arched and rectangular double-hung one-over-one windows with decorative trim surrounds, open staircases on the front and rear facades with arched exterior openings, juliet balconies, small ionic columns, brackets, and corner pilasters, a hipped roof with broad overhanging bracketed eaves, small rooftop towers with hipped roofs, and arched vents, and pilasters at the corners of the wings themselves, dividing the side facades into three segments. After the construction of the wings in 1918, a large breezeway with double-hung windows making up most of the exterior was constructed across the ridge of the hipped roof of the original hotel building, running straight through the original building’s tower in the middle, which saw the addition of a similar rooftop tower with arched vents to the two 1918 wings. The hotel was renovated multiple times in the 20th Century, with the loss of the original porte cochere, reconfiguration of the interior, and the addition of bungalows across Kalakaua Avenue in 1925, which led to the hotel becoming known as the Moana-Seaside Hotel & Bungalows during the period between the 1920s and 1950s. A new hotel, known as the Surfrider, was built immediately Diamond Head of the Moana Hotel by the Matson Navigation Company in 1952, which stood 8 stories tall, towering over the older hotel next door. The hotel’s bungalows were demolished the following year and replaced by the Princess Kaiulani Hotel, with the Moana Hotel, Surfrider Hotel, and Princess Kaiulani Hotel being sold to Sheraton Hotels and Resorts in 1959. The Moana Hotel and Surfrider Hotel were sold to the Kyo-Ya Company, led by Japanese industrialist Kenji Osano, in 1963, but remained under the Sheraton banner. In 1969, a new and much taller Surfrider Hotel was built immediately Ewa of the Moana Hotel, with a new taller tower being added to the Princess Kaiulani Hotel in 1970. After the completion of the new Surfrider Hotel, the old Surfrider, built in 1952, became the Moana Ocean Lanai, and later, the Diamond Head Tower of the Moana Hotel. The Moana Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. In 1989, the Moana Hotel was restored under the direction of architect Virginia D. Murison to its 1920s exterior appearance, with the restoration of deteriorated exterior elements, interior common spaces, and reconstruction of the original porte cochere, as well as better integration of the historic hotel with the adjacent 1952 and 1969 buildings on either side. Now known as the Sheraton Moana Surfrider, the resort maintained the historic charm of the original Moana Hotel and conserved the hotel’s iconic banyan tree, while boasting 793 modern guest rooms, a new pool, with the project winning many preservation awards. The hotel has since been rebranded as the Westin Moana Surfrider Hotel.

This lovely Greek Revival home, originally built sometime around 1900, has two large fluted Ionic columns in the center of the portico, with a large square column on each end. There have been many renovations and updates over the years. This house now serves as a furneral home. It is located at 209 North Washington Street in Rome, NY. (RB/172)
