Dodona (Doric Greek: Δωδώνᾱ, Dōdṓnā, Ionic and Attic Greek: Δωδώνη,[1] Dōdṓnē) in Epirus in northwestern Greece was an oracle devoted to a Mother Goddess identified at other sites with Rhea or Gaia, but here called Dione, who was joined and partly supplanted in historical times by the Greek deity Zeus.

The shrine of Dodona was regarded as the oldest Hellenic oracle, possibly dating to the second millennium BCE according to Herodotus. Situated in a remote region away from the main Greek poleis, it was considered second only to the oracle of Delphi in prestige. Priestesses and priests in the sacred grove interpreted the rustling of the oak (or beech) leaves to determine the correct actions to be taken. According to a new interpretation, the oracular sound originated from bronze objects hanging from oak branches and sounded with the wind blowing, similar to a wind chime.[2] Aristotle considered the region around Dodona to have been part of Hellas and the region where the Hellenes originated.[3] The oracle was first under the control of the Thesprotians before it passed into the hands of the Molossians.[4] It remained an important religious sanctuary until the rise of Christianity during the Late Roman era.

Even at 12mm I was forced to lie on the floor to get this shot. I really wish I could have moved the dining table which sits in the centre of the room!

Built in 1912-13, this Classical Revival-style skyscraper was designed by John Kevan Peebles to house the Holston National Bank, and was originally constructed as a twelve-story building, with an additional two floors added in 1928. The building features a cream brick facade with terra cotta trim and base cladding, with ionic fluted engaged columns at the base on the Gay Street Facade flanking the building’s central double door with a decorative grille on the transom, a pedimented surround, and two flanking bays housing windows, three second story windows above with decorative sill belt coursing, fluted ionic pilasters on the Clinch Avenue facade between the many large window bays, with arrow slit windows below, and an entry door with a decorative surround at the west end of the facade, and a contemporary door cut into the wall below the westernmost window bay, an architrave with triglyphs, a cornice with modillions and dentils, and doric pilasters, recessed panels, and a cornice with egg and dart motif above the third floor windows. Above the third floor, the building is entirely clad in cream brick with pilasters flanking the outermost window bays on the Gay Street and Clinch Avenue Facades, one-over-one windows, a copper frieze around the building between the windows on the eleventh and twelfth floors, and a copper cornice with modillions at the top of the fourteenth floor, balconies on the building’s north facade, and shallower pilasters between the intermediary window bays on the Clinch Avenue Facade. The building served as the home of the Holston National Bank until 1930, when it failed during the Great Depression, as the result of the folly of the merger of the bank with the Union National in 1928, creating the Holston-Union Bank, and necessitating the addition of the two additional floors to the building, undertaken at the height of the financial bubble of the 1920s. Following the failure of the Holston-Union Bank, the building became home to the Hamilton National Bank of Knoxville in 1931, which supplanted it as the largest financial institution in Knoxville, remaining in the building until being bought out by United American Bank in 1975, and subsequently moving its headquarters to the Plaza Tower nearby in 1978. In 2008, the building was converted from commercial office space to a residential condominium tower, known as The Holston, with a major renovation undertaken that also restored several of the building’s original interior common spaces, including its entrance foyer, and added balconies to the north facade. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and is a contributing structure in the Gay Street Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Ionic capital with the additional embellishment of a carved bull's head, perhaps showing the influence of the more exotic architectural forms used in the east, such as the Persian capitals at Persepolis.
