...a fine example of the ionic order in the neoclassical architecture style(more on this in the next upload.)
The Ionic order column forms one of the three orders or organizational systems of classical architecture, the other two canonic orders being the Doric and the Corinthian. (There are two lesser orders, the stocky Tuscan order and the rich variant of Corinthian, the Composite order, added by 16th century Italian architectural theory and practice.)
The Ionic order column originated in the mid-6th century BC in Ionia, the southwestern coastland and islands of Asia Minor settled by Ionian Greeks, where an Ionian dialect was spoken. The Ionic order column was being practiced in mainland Greece in the 5th century BC. The first of the great Ionic temples was the Temple of Hera on Samos, built about 570 BC–560 BC by the architect Rhoikos. It stood for only a decade before it was leveled by an earthquake. It was in the great sanctuary of the goddess: it could scarcely have been in a more prominent location for its brief lifetime. A longer-lasting 6th century Ionic temple was the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. -wikipedia!

The ionic temple on Rievaulx Terrace in North Yorkshire. Built in 1758 and intended as a banqueting hall. The local toffs would use this as a venue for their summer barbecues and garden parties. The basement had to have its own kitchen becasue as it was so far away from the big house.

Greek columns, aren't they great. the children worked in groups to produce them, think they learned quite a lot about Greek Architecture too!
The Stoa of Attalos, situated on the east side of the Ancient Agora, was built under the reign of king Attalos II of Pergamon (159-138 BC), who studied in Athens, under the philosopher Karneades. The stoa is 116.5m lond and 20m wide, with double colonnades, on two floors, 45 Doric columns along the front and 22 Ionic columns inside. There are 21 rooms, on every floor, that were rented out, by the city authorities, as shops or offices.
Now houses the Museum of the Ancient Agora.
The stoa served, for centuries, as the main commercial center for the Athenians, until it was destroyed by the Herulians, in 267 A.D. It was restored, between 1953-1956, by the American School of Classical Studies, with the financial support of John D. Rockefeller Jr.
I passed the back of this house, Ionic Villa, on a walk along the Regent's Canal this morning and I felt compelled to take a look (and a photo) round the front, which is also here on Flickr www.flickr.com/photos/kevertonphoto/46422545684/in/photos... It is one of six villa houses in Regent's Park by Quinlan Terry. Designed in a range of classical styles, they look as though they have been there for many, many years. However they are relative new builds, having been constructed between 1988 and 2002.
I understand that Ionic Villa may be owned by Dr Apurv Bagri, who combines commanding interests in metal trading with a directorship of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and academic roles at City University and London Business School (a short stroll from Ionic Villa through Regent’s Park).
His late father, Baron Bagri was the former owner of Hanover Lodge, a larger house, next door and over the fence, which was sold to Russian oligarch Andrey Goncharenko for £120 million in 2012.

In Ionic architecture, female figures are sometimes used as architectural supports in place of columns. The Greek term "karyatides" literally means "maidens of Karyae" for the strong women of a southern Greek town who were forced to carry objects during and after the Persian Wars. Club premises constituted as the Commercial Newsroom, formerly with two shops beneath, now a bank. By Thomas Harrison, 1807. Yellow ashlar to front and Flemish bond brown brick to sides and rear. 2 storeys to front, 3 to back. The front has a rusticated 3-bay arcade with shopfront behind; the massive piers have plinths; segmental arches with carved keystones projecting as consoles to bear the second storey plinth. The second storey has 4 Ionic pilasters and 3 tall sashes surmounted by recessed carved panels; pediment above.
It opened as the Commercial Coffee Room and was later renamed as the Commercial Newsroom. In 1815 the contents of the city library were moved into the building, but later transferred into the Mechanics' Institute, before the creation of the city's free public library in 1877. The newsroom was managed by a committee, and at the time its "automatic" members included the mayor, the local members of parliament, and leading military officers. Since the middle of the 19th century it has been known as the Chester City Club.
