Priene – VII: The Temple of Athena Polias

The “naos” and the wall dividing the cult area from the treasury room, the "opisthodomos".

The entire temple was designed on a modular system based on 6 x 6 Ionic feet (1 Ionic foot = 0.295 m.) The overall dimensions of the temple platform are equal 66 x 126 ionic feet; the column bases measure 6 feet wide and are 6 feet apart. The temple may thus be regarded as an attempt at canonization of the Ionic order.

The temple cella is 50 ionic ft (14,75 m.) long and 30 ionic ft. (6,85m) wide. The overall length of central building is 100 Ionic feet, 1 “ekatompeton”, equivalent to 29.5 m. The cella is 50 ft. long, the pronaos 30 ft., the opistodom 12 ft. and the separation walls 8 ft.
