A fellow Portland photographer recently posted an image and talked about how much he was looking forward to filling his lungs with the misty spray of a waterfall...I couldn't agree more. For a week now, much of the PNW has been dealing with forest fire smoke and nearly unbreathable air outside and stagnate recycled air inside. To say I am looking forward to clear skies and any sort of natural water production would be an understatement. For now though, a photo of such a scene will have to suffice until the smoke finally clears.

This was taken on my last truly relaxed hike before the pandemic took hold. No one wearing masks, no need for distancing, and plenty of people on the trail to smile at or stop and chat with face to face.

This waterfall is always spectacular, but visit on a really wet day and the whole basalt face turns into one giant drip system. The late day sun had moved west, flaring through the trees and seemingly highlighting each individual drop as it fell. I remember standing there, breathing it all in, soaking it all in.

Part of what I was breathing in were negative ions resulting from the waterfall spray. Referring back to a post I made a couple years ago on the same topic......researchers have found that negative ions, like the ones created within the spray of a waterfall, can "boost your energy, relieve stress, and create a more euphoric state of mind overall." The negative ions get in your bloodstream and form a reaction releasing increased levels of the mood chemical serotonin. They are also thought to attach to and kill circulating disease causing pathogens through the electric charge. What a positive result from a negative charge.

What I wouldn't give to relive that day right now. Sun shining, serotonin flowing, and ions bonding. Mood high, stress low. A respite from the smoke, the weight of a pandemic, and the smash you over the head climate change and human impacts we are seeing on this planet and ALL of the sentient beings that inhabit it.

Circular Ionic garden temple, mid 18th Centuty, possibly designed by James Paine, for George Fox-Lane, 2nd Lord Bingley. Part of a formal early C18 garden laid out to a plan c1725-8 by John Wood for Robert Benson, 1st Lord Bingley. The Black Fen Pleasure Ground is a mile distant from Bramham Park. It is divided by alleys and vistas radiating from round points.

Wentworth Woodhouse is a country house in the village of Wentworth, South Yorkshire, and is believed to be the largest private house in Britain. It comproses two separate houses, joined back-to-back, forming west and east fronts. The older, West front is a baroque house of 1725, and the newer, Palldian East front, started in 1734, reputedly has the longest facade of any house in Europe, at 606 feet.

The Grade II* listed Ionic Temple is one of several follies in and around Wentworth Woodhouse park; the others include Needle's Eye and Keppel's Column. The 18th Century temple has ten Ionic columbs supporting a dome, with a statue of Hercules slaying a centaur. It was built in 1735-36 for Thomas Watson-Wentworth by Henry Flitcroft.

£12 million was spent on the restoration of the gardens at Chiswick House but sadly the Orange Tree Garden wasn't included although the temple was restored.

Grade I listed. 18th century Circular domed brick temple with tetrastyle portico. Stylobate of seven steps, fluted Ionic columns, entablature with carved basso relievo frieze, pediment, round-headed arch, semi-circular half-domed alcoves to side walls. The temple faces a circular pond in the centre of which is a stone obelisk on a plinth.

-As its names suggests, the Ionic Order originated in Ionia, a coastal region of central Anatolia (today Turkey) where a number of ancient Greek settlements were located. Volutes (scroll-like ornaments) characterize the Ionic capital and a base supports the column, unlike the Doric order. The Ionic order developed in Ionia during the mid-sixth century B.C.E. and had been transmitted to mainland Greece by the fifth century B.C.E. Among the earliest examples of the Ionic capital is the inscribed votive column from Naxos, dating to the end of the seventh century B.C.E.

The foundations of Greek philosophy, geometry and mathematics with the Ionian school of the eminent Thales and his followers Anaximander, Anaximenes, Heraclitus, Anaxagoras, Archelaus, and Diogenes of Apollonia; the mystery school founded by Pythagoras of Samos, the great geometer and philosopher; and generations of brilliant artists and architects who deeply influenced the development of Hellenic art. In fact, if Western civilization was born in ancient Greece, then Greek civilization can be said to have been born in Ionia.

Grant's Tomb

formally known as the General Grant National Memorial

architect: John H. Duncan

architectural style: Neoclassical, Ionic order

contractor: John T. Brady

groundbreaking ceremony April 27, 1891, first stone laid by president Benjamin Harrison

dedicated: April 27, 1897 (75th-anniversary ceremony of Grant's birth)

The final resting place of Ulysses S. Grant (1822–1885), 18th President of the United States. It is the second largest mausoleum in the Western Hemisphere.

The allegorical figures above the cornice represent Victory (left) and Peace (right).

The tomb's exterior is modeled after the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus with Persian elements and resembles the Tropaeum Alpium.

The two eagle statues which flank the entrance were added during the 1935 restorations, saved from the demolished New York City Post Office.

Ancient ionic column embedded in a wall in Rome

Here you have a view of what the column would look like, made entirely out of brown parts, since the whip (hopely just for now...) is only available in brown. If you ask me, I could eat it whole. Mmmm... chocolate... or maybe it's just the time of the year.

I took the opportunity to show the internals as well. It's just as simple as stacking some super SNOT-bricks with one-by-one round plates (that everybody has boxes full of). As said, I learned this technique from the designer video "building columns - part 2" from the LEGO Creator website.

So enjoy this picture, and enjoy your meal, if you're having one...
