If you have a good memory, you may remember the Corinthian column I made some time ago. I got a lot of good comments on that one (thank you!), and I wanted to build some more... stuff.

If you have a perfect memory, you may remember that I said the Ionic column was hard to do because of its spirals (volutes, if you prefer fancy terms). I did have a go at designing one however, but I began to think the spirals were impossible to do. And if you don't get those right, your column is not right.

If you have a good eyesight, you may have noticed that I'm presenting now an Ionic column nontheless. What happened? Some would call it a miracle, some just inspiration. I found the Indiana Jones whip.

Once I had my spiral (the only spirally part in LEGO, I believe), the column flowed onto my LDD screen. At almost the first try, I had something I was happy with.

And that's what you see in front of you. Before anyone asks: the column should be buildable in real life. I know the whips aren't available in white, but everything else apart form the One Rings I used, is available in white (now even the croissant!). Furthermore, I believe the column's quite stable. It uses the same technique that I learned from Jamie, in the designer video on the LEGO Creator website. This is my tribute to that video, because it made me want to make columns. And I've come a long way.

So I hope you enjoy this Ionic column in minifig scale. And I looked it up for you: this is the first one in LEGO to appear on the internet.

Colonne ioniche Duomo di Treviso (TV)

Italia

Built in 1855, this Greek Revival-style building was designed by David Dubach to serve as the Jefferson County Courthouse. The building features a red brick exterior, a rusticated stone base, a gabled roof, a cornice with dentils, brick doric pilasters, six-over-six and nine-over-nine double-hung windows, a cupola with a gold-clad dome with doric pilasters, a lantern with a windvane, and dormers with clock faces, and a raised front portico with fluted ionic columns below a pediment. The building is a contributing structure in the Madison Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006. The courthouse suffered a major fire in 2010 that gutted the structure, but after a major restoration, the building was reopened in 2011.

Richard Morris Hunt Memorial

sculptor: Daniel Chester French, 1900

architect: Bruce Price

architectural style: Beaux-Arts, neoclassical

dedicated: Monday, October 31, 1898; Hunt’s birthday

The center piece of the Richard Morris Hunt Memorial is a larger than life size bust on stele of the famous architect. Below him is an allegorical figure in bas-relief, on a mosaic floor, approached by three steps. The back of the free-standing exedra supports decorative columns and a cornice and is flanked by French's allegorical, female statues.

To the right is "Architecture" holding a model of the of the World’s Columbian Exposition Administration Building. Opposite is "Painting and Sculpture" with a mallet in her right hand. Her left hand bears an artist’s palette and a figure of “Theseus” from the pediment of the Parthenon.

Those with sharp observation might notice the original lettering The Molsons Bank. And if additionally you know North American beers well you might associate the Molson name with brewer Molson Coors. You're correct. Molson Coors was formed in 2005 by the merger of Molson of Canada, and Coors of the United States.

The Molsons are a prominent family in Montreal. John Molson came to Canada from Lincolnshire, England, in 1782. He established the Molson Brewery Co. in 1786. The family branched into the banking business by founding the Molson's Bank in 1850. By the time Molsons Bank was sold to the Bank of Montreal in 1925, the bank had 125 branches mainly in Quebec and Ontario.

There have been many names : Tempio di Saturno,Templum Saturni or Aedes Saturnus. This is the front portico(porch) of the temple of Saturn at the Roman Forum. One of the oldest strutures in Rome, a temple dedicated to the agricultural deity Saturn. The temple dates back to 500 B.C. These are the few columns -- of what's left of the temple. The Ionic columns are still evident -- with the scrolled volutes. This place was once a repository for the State Treasury.

These columns survived two and a half milleiniums (2,500 years), fires, and destruction. One of the silent witnesses of how the Roman Republic started, and how it ended and become an empire. How an emperor rose and junked the Senate. (Hmm... now that sounds like a plot of the movie Star Wars, I wonder if John Lucas somehow got his Star Wars idea from Roman History).

The capital consisting of two symmetrical scrolled volutes atop a column in the style of the Ionic Order shot in the British Museum in London. Did I know that when I shot it? No. Did I have to do some research into neo-classical architecture? Yes. Could I now distinguish Ionic, Doric and Corinthian columns from one another? You betcha. Wikipedia and Google Image Search be praised.

I was able to shoot this easily from a balcony so I was directly level with the subject which meant there was no perspective correction and distortion in post-processing.

The Temple of Artemis in Sardis was the fourth largest Ionic temple in the world. Originally built in 300 BC by the ancient Greeks, the temple was renovated by the Romans in the 2nd century AD. During the Roman period it served also as a temple of the imperial cult.

The Leeds General Cemetery (also known as Woodhouse Cemetery, Woodhouse Lane Cemetery and, since its closure in 1969, St George's Fields) is a former cemetery in Woodhouse, Leeds. It is now within the campus of the University of Leeds, and has been landscaped and kept as an open space. Some original monuments and the 1835 cemetery chapel remain. Notable surviving monuments include those of circus proprietor Pablo Fanque (1796-1871), who was mentioned in the Beatles song "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" from the LP Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

By the 1930s it was running low on space for further burials and in the 1940s the site became overgrown and neglected. By this point University of Leeds buildings surrounded the cemetery. In 1956 the University decided to acquire the Leeds General Cemetery company and convert it into a private limited company. Fewer and fewer people visited the cemetery during this time.

In 1965, a Parliamentary Act was passed giving the University the power and permission to discontinue interments and create a public open space. Work transforming the cemetery was carried out in 1968. The majority of headstones and memorials were removed and then the land was grassed over and landscaped. In 1969 the site was reopened to the public under its original name of St George’s Field.

This Rotunda was built in 1766 in the grounds of Petworth House in West Sussex. From it's position at the top of a hill you can see views across the Sussex countryside.
