"Card Spring Inverted"
Happy Earth Day!! In honor of nothing, today's image is of a card flourish. It is sometimes called a "card spring", and some call it a "Russian Shuffle." Whatever you call it, it makes a fun sound. I initially lit these paws with a small, hard light from the front, against a white background. Deciding it was not dramatic enough (like, Doug Henning dramatic), I went with a black background and lit from below. What sold me on the bottom lighting were the highlights and shadows on the right hind. It reminded me of the joining of hands in Michelangelo's Creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel. While I am making no comparisons, I just liked the pose of the hand. I was of course working in complete darkness. That is because if any ambient light was present, there would be a blurring around the cards. It is the strobe's job to freeze the action without any blur. While that slight blurring can be interesting, I was doing all I could to avoid it in this situation. Because I was working in the dark (and using both hands), I had to once again trigger the camera with a remote in my mouth. Needless to say, it took a few exposures before I ended up here. Once I saw this one on the LCD screen, I dropped the camera and walked away. I was going to put a cool filter on the image in post, but decided it didn't need it. Oh, I decided to flip the image 90 degrees. Just thought it was more interesting. Thanks for springing by!!

There's a reason why this isn't the sharpest photo I've ever taken. It was a reflection shot, in to moving water over a step stone, then inverted it.

Joan Miró i Ferrà (20 April 1893 – 25 December 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona. A museum dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró, was established in his native city of Barcelona in 1975, and another, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, was established in his adoptive city of Palma de Mallorca in 1981.
Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.

The 'Caldea' at Escaldes Engordany, on the northeastern edge of Andorra la Vella. One of the most striking pieces of modern architecture I've ever seen.
It was built in 1994 and houses a complex of thermal baths and swimming pools, in addition to a shopping centre and restaurant, on three different levels. The central hub of the building is crowned by the gleaming 'silver' glazed spire, which contains a viewing gallery accessed by lift (unfortunately not operational by the time we got there).
The complex is currently in the process of being enlarged. We didn't get inside the main thermal pool rooms but at least got a taste of the ultra modern interiors from the areas still accessible.
Andorra la Vella, capital of the Principality of Andorra is a largely modern city surrounded by mountain ranges, reflected in the typography of it's street layout which is on several different levels. It was thus never a large city with so little room for expansion.
There are medieval monuments such as the ancient Casa de la Vall (the old council chamber) and the church of St Esteve (mostly rebuilt in more modern times) but the overall flavour is contemporary, owing to modern architecture and sculptures around the city.

The Inverted Fountain at UCLA, which is my favorite fountain of all time, anywhere. Really. OK I haven't seen the fountains in Rome or Venice, but hey, I like this one. I practically grew up on campus at UCLA, my mom worked there from 1973 to 1980, and my dad graduated in 1974.
UCLA is the only college I ever really WANTED to attend. I only applied to two schools out of high school in 1988, one was SDSU and the other well, you know. I didn't get in then, because I had a 2.78 GPA and a 1230 on my SATs, so I went to State, where my mom had worked from 1980 to 1989. See a trend? Oh yeah, she graduated from SDSU in 1982.
I FINALLY got into UCLA in 2004, transferring from Santa Monica College. Before that I took classes at Mesa in San Diego. I graduated this last June with a BA in English.
So as you can see, this fountain represents a lot for me.

I have always liked the way this maille looks. Not as hard as I thought it would be. Aluminium with jasper and crazy lace agate
Lake Revelstoke. I tend to enjoy the kaleidoscope effect of inverting reflections. I Its still a panorama of a reflection of sky, mountains and forest in a lake but now its more. Its also a puzzle, a challenge to try to make sense of reality turned on its head; its disorienting. Its a self indulgent thing. BC has so much beauty.
