I was in Drumheller, Alberta, over Christmas, photographing with a Flickr-pal from Toronto. Despite the crushing cold, we had a great time. On this spectacular morning, driving south from town we stopped to photograph a gorgeous sun pillar from a bridge over the Red Deer River. Hand holding, because it was just too cold to unfold the tripod legs - and we were concerned that the pillar would fade if we wasted time - we shot fast and intuitively. Sometimes that is the best way to capture a moment!
Sun pillars may occur on very cold, clear mornings when tiny - generally microscopic - platelike, asymmetrical ice prisms refract the sun's rays.
At minus 34C it's possible to be shoot outdoors, but little problems easily become big, and one's problem-solving capacity is less than optimal. When we drove up to the top of those hills, we were above the river valley, with windswept prairie in all directions, and at that point five minutes was about the maximum we could manage outside the vehicle. And yes, I had fun.

Biography
Jørgen Gudmundsen-Holmgreen grew up in a home where the whole family was artistically gifted. His education as a sculptor was atypical, just after graduating in 1913 he became a trainee with Anders Bundgaard, with whom he remained until 1915. Two months late in 1913 he was sent down to Anne-Marie Carl Nielsen in Hanover to help her with the enlargement of the horse to Christian IX's equestrian statue, and the same year he saw an archaic male torso in Berlin, which made a deep impression. From this originated his study of Greek sculpture, which became an essential prerequisite for his interpretation of the young figure, the pervasive main motif in all his later art. Without directly imitating the Greco-Archaic accuracy and moderation with detail, its form of expression became characteristic of his own sculpture. His main work Josef from 1939 is a culmination of many years of immersion in the young figure. His many portrait busts testify to a pronounced sense of the physiognomic characteristic, such as in the noble portrait of Hadi, and as the years passed, there was also a growing interest in the psychological expression. In 1947 he was in Tunis, and a large number of experienced, small sketches of Arabs show a new, intuitive side of his art. He received several official assignments during those years and was a frequent exhibitor at the Free Exhibition, where he joined in 1940.
Carrying NASA technology demonstrations and science investigations, Intuitive Machines is targeting their Moon landing no earlier than 12:32 p.m. EST on Thursday, March 6. The company’s Nova-C lunar lander is slated to land in Mons Mouton, a lunar plateau near the Moon’s South Pole, as part of NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative and Artemis campaign to establish a long-term lunar presence.

After a successful launch on Feb. 15, six NASA science instruments and technology demonstrations continue their journey to the Moon aboard Intuitive Machines’ lander named Odysseus. The company confirmed communications contact with its mission operations control in Houston, and its lander continues to perform as expected.
Known as IM-1, Intuitive Machines successfully transmitted its first images back to Earth on Feb. 16. These were captured shortly after separation from SpaceX’s second stage, on Intuitive Machines’ first journey to the Moon as part of the agency’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative and Artemis campaign.
All powered NASA science instruments on board the Intuitive Machines Odysseus lander have completed their transit checkouts, received data, and are operating as expected, including LN-1 (Lunar Node 1). LN-1 has made three successful passes with NASA’s Deep Space Network, establishing real-time communications with ground stations on Earth. The anticipated landing time is now 4:24 p.m. EST on Thursday, Feb. 22.

Intuitively, defining poverty doesn't seem necessary: we know it when we see it. But while we can probably agree that the inhabitants of Dickensian slums were in poverty, in many cases today things aren't so clear cut.
It's partly because of this difficulty that there are several measures available. The main government figures are for absolute and relative poverty, measured before and after housing costs.
Although the figures produced by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) are referred to as measuring relative and absolute low income, it's common to refer to them as measures of poverty (for example, in the Child Poverty Act or at Prime Minister's Questions).
Relative poverty
Relative poverty generally means that a person can't afford an "ordinary living pattern"—they're excluded from the activities and opportunities that the average person enjoys.
A household is in relative poverty (also called relative low income) if its income is below 60% of the median household income.
The median is the number 'in the middle' of a set—so half of all households earn more than the median income household, and half earn less.
Absolute poverty
Absolute poverty is slightly trickier. The definition used by a number of international organisations (such as the UN and the World Bank) is that you cannot afford the basic needs of life—food, clothing, shelter and so on.
This is absolute in the sense that it’s measured relative to a fixed standard of living, rather than the rest of the population.
This isn’t the definition used by the UK government.

“It has all the music I like in it” - Blue Tapes response to Benjamin Finger’s initial submission of Amorosa Sensitiva.
That music is cloud-rolled drones and sun-speckled synths; it is low tides of distant cello, ebbing into view; it is tiny hits of percussion clustering protectively around sustained piano patterns; it is techno slowed down and stretched out and reconfigured as free jazz; it is cascades of notes that tilt your head back and lift your legs into the air and scroll around you; it is snatches of human conversation rendered as abstract song textures, which lends a hallucinatory logic to the LP’s narrative.
Over the past six years, Benjamin has conjured as many albums of meditative, atmospheric compositions that draw from multiple sources but retain a very natural and intuitive musicianship - one that prevents the juxtaposed sounds from sounding patchwork or contrary.
Amorosa Sensitiva isn’t just stylistically varied though, it has a wide emotional palette - is as comfortable exhibiting ferocity as bliss. It has all the music we like in it and probably quite a lot of the music you like, too.

On Feb. 22, Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C lander, called Odysseus, completed a seven-day journey to lunar orbit and softly landed near crater Malapert A in the South Pole region of the Moon at 6:24 p.m. EST. On Feb. 24, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft passed over the landing site at an altitude of about 56 miles (90 km) and photographed Odysseus.

🚀 OTD 55 years ago, Apollo 15 launched to the moon, carrying the first EV to drive the lunar surface.
And here's the Apollo 15 Flight Director / Attitude Indicator (FDAI or “8 Ball” 🎱) that was used to fly to the moon and back, the newest addition to the space collection.at work.
A photo in comments below shows this very unit on the Command Module instrument deck post flight, directly above the Apollo Guidance Computer’s DSKY interface and facing the Commander’s seat.
The FDAI was the primary visual reference for spacecraft orientation in three-dimensional space. Inside, it is a magnificent electromechanical clockwork, with motors inside the sphere that rotates on three orthogonal axes... while remaining attached to the instrument with electrical connections. (see comments below for interior shots)
This instrument showed the spacecraft's attitude (or orientation) by rotating a ball. Pitch and yaw were read directly from the rotating sphere; roll was indicated by a circumferential pointer (white triangle at 4 o'clock). It also acted as a "flight director", using three yellow needles to indicate how the astronauts should maneuver the spacecraft by showing the deviation from target. Three more rate meters along the outer edges showed how fast the spacecraft was rotating about each axis.
Originally conceived as multiple separate instruments, astronauts, many of them test pilots, advocated for a unified display modeled after an aircraft’s artificial horizon, resulting in this elegant and highly intuitive navigational device.
Manufactured by Honeywell, the side label reads: "Indicator Attitude Flight Director, NAA/S & ID Control No. ME432-0168-0502, Mfr Serial No. 10028AAN1054, Mfr Part No. JG26469, Contract No. M7J7XAH-4700055, Mfr Date 31 Jan 1969." The instrument retains its two original umbilical cables and bears multiple inspection stamps, including "NAM 289," matching the stamp on the accompanying North American Rockwell "Temporary Parts Removal Tag." Four threaded studs on the back of the unit mounted a coldplate from the spacecraft Environmental Control System, circulating coolant to regulate the temperature of the unit while in use.
After its Apollo 15 service, this FDAI was formally repurposed from Apollo to support Skylab missions, then transferred to the Space Shuttle program in 1975 for simulation studies at Rockwell International. The internals were last tested in 1982, and it was retired from service in 1998. Apollo 15 Commander David Scott reviewed the transfer documents, curious as to how it was separated from his spacecraft.

Donna and I assembled a selection of four of her recent Embrodery works to be juried into the annual Metro Montage exhibition at Marietta’s art museum. She’s been creating pieces like these since early this year. Most of them are approximately 9 x 12 inches, with this one being two inches longer.
My favorite 3D program stopped working as I began the bracer. The company cancelled all future development and refunded the remainder of my subscription.
The same hand and new body-size adjustment bracer was successfully tested on LaraX as well.
Previously to this project, I've done simple rigging and file-conversion in Blender. The program is quite overwhelming. Not very intuitive to me. I've hated it for years, every time I've tried it out.
But this simple GenX bracer was built and rigged entirely in Blender.
So I guess, as of today's project, I'm learning Blender from now on.

As part of NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative and Artemis campaign, media accreditation is open for Intuitive Machines’ first robotic flight to the Moon’s surface. The robotic deliveries will transport agency science and technology demonstrations to the Moon for the benefit of all. The Intuitive Machines Nova-C lander carrying NASA science and commercial payloads will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Liftoff is targeted for a multi-day launch window, which opens no earlier than mid-February, from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Among the NASA items on its lander, the Intuitive Machines mission will carry instruments focusing on plume-surface interactions, space weather/lunar surface interactions, radio astronomy, precision landing technologies, and a communication and navigation node for future autonomous navigation technologies. A successful landing will help support the CLPS model for commercial payload deliveries to the lunar surface. As the anchor customer of CLPS, NASA is investing in lower-cost methods of Moon deliveries and aims to be one of many customers.

This is Intuitive Machines' IM-2 lander that once again toppled over after trying to land on Mons Mutons near the lunar south pole.
The picture had lots of detail hidden in the shadows which I brought out in processing.
The picture was reprojected to a rectilinear image with a precise, photogrammetry derived camera model.
