The Glenn College celebrated the completion of the 2019-20 High School Internship Program with a dinner for the participants Monday (2/45/20) at Page Hall. The High School Internship Program is a unique public service internship program that allows high school students in the fall term of their senior year to gain first-hand experience within organizations in the public service sector.

The Honourable John Rustad, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, presented each of the interns with a completion certificate. Speakers included Chief Ron Sam, Songhees Nation, Chief Andy Thomas, Esquimalt Nation, Kate Elliot, Métis Nation B.C., Howard Grant, First Nations Summit, Hjalmer Wenstob, BC Assembly of First Nations, Priscilla Sabbas Watts, and intern Joshua Gottfriedson.

A ceremony celebrating the latest group of interns to complete the Aboriginal Youth Internship Program (AYIP) is held October 25, 2016.

 

The event – attended by Chiefs, elders and leaders from First Nations communities across the province – showcases a program that helps First Nations, Metis and Inuit youth gain work experience in government and community organizations. As well as work experience, AYIP provides participants with valuable networking, professional and leadership skill development.

 

This year marks a milestone for the program, which has welcomed 10 cohorts of interns to its ranks.

Alaska Career Discovery Internship Program is partnership with the Student Conservation Association to provide a 12 week internship to college freshman and sophomores to discover careers with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

 

The Alaska CDIP interns meet for their first time in Fergus Falls, MN for a week of orientation at the Prairie Learning Center. They participated in team building activities and sessions all the program in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

As a STEM Teacher and Researcher (STAR) Program summer intern at SLAC, Carolina Nava monitors and organize the manufacturing of vacuum components for the future LCLS-II. Carolina is also helping her mentor Giulia Lanza host a week-long summer camp for high school girls – the SLAC Accelerating Girls Engagement in STEM (SAGE-S) program – which encourages college-bound girls with a passion for discovery and innovation to pursue STEM careers.

 

Carolina has a B.S. in Economics from the University of Oregon and a Master’s in Teaching from Pacific University, and currently teaches math at Wy’east Middle School in Hood River, Oregon. Carolina is mentored by Giulia Lanza, head of the Vacuum Assembly & Installation Laboratory in SLAC’s Mechanical Fabrication Department.

Transformation Internship Program (TIP) is a unique opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to gain training and experience in state government and assist in organization change management, business process re-engineering and/or information technology systems and solutions. Through TIP, students gain experience in areas such as strategic planning, human capital management, organizational change management, quantitative and qualitative management and fiscal planning.

 

Students are assigned to program teams, enabling them to work with state employees and transfer their classroom activities to actual work experiences.

 

The fall session welcomed 69 students to the program, although many of them are not able to attend today’s event. The Departments supporting student projects this session include AG’s, B&F, DAGS, DCCA, DHRD, DoD, DOE, DOT, Governor’s Office, Lt. Governor’s Office, and OIMT. Universities represented were Brigham Young University, Hawaii Pacific University, University of Hawaii and University of Phoenix.
