Career Discovery Intern (CDIP), Phillip Andrew with on biological inventory of Pickerel Lake. Founded in 2008, the Career Discovery Internship Program (CDIP) was created in partnership with the Student Conservation Association to help prepare the next generation of wildlife professionals and managers.Tetlin had two SCA (CSIP) interns, one working in Biology and the other in Visitor Services. They were fully engaged in these programs providing valuable assistance to a limited refuge staff as a result of sequestration. Although they were assigned to different programs, we tried to give them some cross program experience to gain first hand knowledge and skills associated with to operating a Visitor Center, giving interpretive program, and conducting biological field surveys on a National Wildlife Refuge. Our interns also recieved first aid, CPR, bear safety, dunker training and firearms training. They were also given the opportunity to go to Valdez with a refuge ornithology class to experience another part of Alaska. The VS intern working at a visitor center particularly enjoyed meeting a variety of people from around the world and spending time interacting with them doing evening interpretive programs, The Biology intern learned a number of valuable skills in bird identification, bird behavior, and conducting a variety of field surveys related to phenology, prey populations and biological inventories. We believe we were successful providing our interns with experiences which allowed them to gain a better understanding and appreciation for Alaska, National Wildlife Refuges, and the work of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
