This project uses digital technology, such as procedural imagery and 3D printing, to continue the rich tradition of Portuguese patterned tiles (azulejos) with today's means in a way that is both innovative and meaningful.

This is my thesis project poster.

Paradoxically, although western societies are moving towards economic prosperity and technological development, social capital is steadily declining. Nowadays young people feel less inclined than their elders to engage as citizens in the rituals of voting and following news about world events and public affairs. As a whole, society appears increasingly nihilistic and depressed, where most indicators of ill-being, such as suicides, psychic disorders, divorce, loneliness and the like, are widespread and increasing.

On the other hand, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have been transforming our society into a networked and hyper-connected global community. Nonetheless, we must distinguish between enhanced connectivity and enhanced collectivity. Merely because digital media is making people more connected does not mean it is increasing the degree of our social engagement.

Can Design help reverse these trends? Can Design help transform increased connectivity into increased socialization, civic participation, and a greater sense of individual and collective agency? Can we take advantage of the connective and associative power of communication technologies and inject it into social communities?

MediaFranca is about empowering young adults and teenagers to express their point of view in an egalitarian conversational environment. A key goal is to impress upon teenagers their inherent civic presence as active stakeholders of their communities. MediaFranca is also focused in generating more creative and collaborative enterprises over passive and consumptive ones.

illutron & GeekPhysical teamed up to bring an intense 3 day workshop to Aalborg University students. Day 1 was with Vanessa and introduced students to rapid prototyping, learning from the industry, design in the real world, design methods and introduction to Arduino. Day 2 and 3 were get-dirty days with Dzl and illutron member Christian Liljedahl as they tore into scrap electronics, toys and other 'junk' to help students identify components and their properties, and create intriguing projects that were displayed for family, friends, and the public in an exhibition the next day.

The Birds

The Birds focuses on actresses who starred in Alfred Hitchcock films; his attraction to blonde hair is explored through the use of Tippi Hedren. A processing sketch recreates the male director's search for his leading lady's fabricated blonde hair, the data saved from this sketch a representation of Hitchcock's line of vision.

That is what I call the interface of the MARTA Breeze Cards vending machine. This one is at Peachtree Station.

I am getting into the habit of taking photos of things that involve usability and interaction design. This one was a bit overwhelming. They had a separate machine to handle the Spanish version. I think that says something in wrong. Why couldn't the interface handle two or more languages? It's probably because the design was "hard-coded" into the interface so languages could only be changed in the software. I didn't study it that much. I just grabbed a photo for the memory.
