About to do the last pass on the Pam Golding Intranet IA, thought I'd share the beauty of information laid out in a visual way!

Feeling rather accomplished!

PS: Hope one day we can share the visual design for this intranet, it completely rocks in its simple beauty and is soooo nice to use!

I was in Certosa di Pontignano in Siena, Tuscany, from Sunday to Thursday this week, for the Siena Design Project.

It's been amazing there... meeting interesting new people, playing the longest game in the history of pool, presentations (eeek, we always have to go last so I end up feeling a bit anxious all day), eating lots and lots and lots of yummy yummy yummy Italian food....

*OK, I'm back in Milano now....*

Believe it or not, I met Juhan Sonin three years ago on librarything.com, a social media site for book lovers. LibraryThing has an interesting feature which compares similarity of libraries and Juhan came out as in my top 3 list.

Organizing books by color is definitely a first - I must try this some time!

Compare our libraries - though clearly Juhan's is much bigger!

This interactive piece places the user in control of an unstable ecosystem of islands and boats. The work is inspired by my own time growing up on a small island as well as the eventful history across all the Scottish islands. Throughout the project I have explored the natural, social and industrial events that have effected this larger network of islands.

Data Cultures is an interactive project that explores the realm of data visualization. It is an interpretative piece that plays upon the similarities between the emergent nature of ‘the social network’ (specifically Twitter), and the growth and spread of a bacterial species. As well as relying on Tweets as a conceptual Trigger, the piece also relies on Tweets as a literal trigger. As Tweets containing a specified word are received, they are visualised in the form of generative creatures, who’s attributes and resilience are based on the content their defining Tweet, and the creator’s profile. The project uses the visual metaphor of a petri-dish in to frame and analyse a snapshot of real-time Twitter activity.

Satellite Lamps is a project that reveals one of the most significant contemporary technology infrastructures, the Global Positioning System (GPS). Satellite Lamps glow brighter when GPS signals are stronger, and when we use timelapse photography we can see how GPS signals inhabit different everyday spaces. Prototype of a design project about navigation and spatial perception without sight. The resulting concept describes a firefighter gas mask with integrated light interface that translates proximity of surrounding elements into a corresponding light intensity. The ' Whisker' mask assists firefighters with finding their way in a dark smoke-filled building.

This is an example of a lowfi wireframe sketched on a whiteboard. Most of the time a sketch on paper works fine, but when we're working through a tough page the whiteboard is awesome to brainstorm around.

Kristen Berman was kind enough to do a show and tell demo of the Lytro light field camera. Big thanks to Kristen for letting us play with the camera.

New Field Notes day is like new computer day. Which is like new bike day. Which is kind of like new jeans day. New days are the best days of all the days.

This time, I'm starting the special edition from SVA's MFA in Interaction Design. Thanks to Liz and Qing Qing from SVA for the special Field Notes. Can't wait to fill this one up.

Come see it! @ TodaysART 2009

Last night my friend Chris Greazel and I attended the Graduation show at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. This fuzzy photo is of (I think I remember this right) Jeffrey Jarvis, a student at Art Center and this table is interactive. The table responds to touch and Jeff had programmed it to respond in interesting ways. I bent his ear a little and got him to talk about the technology a bit. It can respond to multiple touches but it's not a multitouch screen, it responds to the various inputs/touches serially. His application was built in Flash/ActionScript and it did various semirandom actions when you would put a finger down. The resolution of the display is 768x768 pixels, relatively low resolution compared to Microsoft Surface I should think. Jeff was telling me that before they put the leather outer casing (making it nice to lean on) the interactions people would do were much less comfortable. Making it easy to get engaged. I mentioned that I had heard Jim Bumgardner speak about interfaces at Yahoo a few weeks ago at the Web Developer Meetup and he said that is was Jim Bumgardner who taught this class! All in all, a great evening out for my old friend and I.

More from http://www.artcenter.edu/mdp/:

Philip van Allen is teaching students to work with Interactive Multi-Touch table this summer using an Oracle, a round, multi-touch table designed originally for use in the harsh environment of the Detroit Auto Show (e.g. it does not use a camera for touch detection). The table, on loan to the MDP from George P. Johnson (GPJ) in exchange for a first-look at new concepts developed by our students, was originally designed by MDP alum Nikolai Cornell, Interactive Design & Technology Lead at GPJ, who brought in Philip van Allen and the Moto Development Group to design the technology.
