I have a bit of a "steel fetish" when it comes to espresso machines and anything related to coffee. And while I'm supposedly a super-taster, I don't usually taste that "metallic twang" that others get from steel cups and such - at least most of the time I don't.

These great little insulated cups from Ikea are cheap (about $6 for each cup and saucer), hold heat extremely well, and have a nice tulip-bowl inner shape of brushed metal (outside is polished metal). The saucer itself is actually thick - shiny steel on top, semi-finished steel on bottom, and hollowed out in between (or with some foam type insert, because they are light). I think Ikea still has these today. I bought two cups and saucers when I first saw them at Ikea.

This building has these insulated standoff bowls that connected the wiring from the huge (now removed) radio towers to the building to old vacuum tube relays and eventually to a operator terminal. It must have been an impressive sight to see all the wires strung up!

The annual 175 km Batavierenrace (Dutch Wikipedia and the official website) relay race (estafette) requires motorcyclists for all sorts of activities during the race, mainly directing traffic and preventing accidents by guiding the runners. Those bikers need to be fed and hydrated, this is the responsibility of the care teams (verzorgingsploegen). One of these teams usually meets at Hackerspace Hack42 before the start of the race, which is an excellent opportunity to photograph motorcycles and their riders.

Hunter Panel's trademarked Cool-Vent product, a rigid roof insulation panel composed of polyiso foam core, is manufactured as a ventilated nailbase insulation panel. This quality steep-slope insulation board offers sustainable thermal insulating characteristics while also allowing air circulation within the roof assemble. A standard 1-inch air space permits airflow in all directions to give improved cooling and ventilation; this ventilation space helps reduce moisture vapor and heat build-up.

-3-part product consisting of a 4’ x 8’ NexGen Chemistry(tm) polyiso foam insulation board, a middle layer of wood spacers, and a top layer of 4’ x 8’ plywood.

-Cool-Vent provides 92% open air space and allows for 75% lateral air movement throughout the roof assembly

-The vented, Cool-Vent insulation keeps a continuous flow of air moving through the roof system that cools the metal roof panels and helps keep rooftop snow and ice from melting.

An aficionado of glass insulators, which were once used on power and telephone and telegraph lines, has mounted them on a fence styled to look like a line of utility poles. Location: Jimmie Leeds Road, Galloway Township, New Jersey.

On the highway I drive almost daily, there's a line of old hydro poles. The actual power lines were removed long ago, and the poles look like they're on their last legs. I've been keeping my eye on them, hoping to someday get my hands on one of the glass insulators. Yesterday, driving home from a photoshoot, I spotted a downed pole. I pulled a u-turn and scrambled across the ditch. I only saw two insulators at first - both broken. But there was one more, completely intact. It took me a few moments of struggle to unscrew it from the very rusty post, but I managed to get it off in one piece. Not only is the object itself old, it also shows my own age. I could picture both my mother and my grandmother doing exactly the same thing. I come by it honestly!

Insulating your wooden garden shed is important to protect stored equipment from moisture, cold or heat. In the same way, if your wooden shelter serves as a craft shop or a leisure room, you will enjoy working or enjoying a good time in a healthy environment.

You will prevent the cold or the heat of inviting yourself in your habitable cottage. There are many materials at your disposal, a selection is required according to the type of your cottage.

The floor, the roof, and the walls will have to be insulated in order to benefit from a habitable space in all seasons with maximum comfort. Here is how to insulate a wooden garden shed.

Insulate the floor of your garden shed

In the same way, as for insulation of the roof, you can insulate the floor from your wooden garden shed during and after construction.

Case 1: Insulate the soil during construction

When building the shelter, insulate the floor of the shelter by raising it by means of beams or breeze blocks placed on the concrete.

Insulate the slab of the concrete slab when it is larger than your shelter (strongly advised).

If your shelter is placed directly on the concrete slab, insulate the floor with polystyrene plates. Expanded polystyrene (PSE) insulation or Extruded polystyrene insulation (XPS).

Case 2: Insulate the soil after construction

Attach regularly spaced joists to the concrete slab.

Cut polystyrene plates and place them between the joists.

Then lay the floor of your wooden shelter, screwing it into the joists.

Insulate the walls of your wooden shelter

25% of the heat loss occurs through the walls of an uninsulated house. To insulate the walls of your wooden shelter, choose a Rockwool insulation.

Tip: Prefer the insulation in roll or panel.

Measure the spaces between the wall posts.

Cut the insulation pieces and place them between the wall studs.

Once you have laid the insulation on the walls, install the wall cladding.

Insulate the roof of your wooden garden shed

The easiest method to insulate the roof from your wooden garden shed is to do it during construction. However, if your shelter is already built and you want to insulate it for comfort, it is possible.

Case 1: Isolate the roof during construction

Choose a type of insulation, rock wool or thin insulation, then:

When the vapor barrier of the roof is installed:

Insert the rock wool between the rafters.

If you chose a thin insulation, unroll it on the roof and then staple it.

Then install a sub-roof screen.

Cover the roof with OSB boards that will accommodate a roof covering.

Case 2: Isolate roof after construction

Insulation is done through the interior of the shelter. Choose your insulation, rock wool or thin insulation, then:

If you chose rock wool:

Insert the rock wool between the rafters, starting at the bottom of the roof.

Always leave a 2 cm air gap between the insulation and the roofing or underlayment if any.

Then apply a steam brake by stapling it on the rafters.

In the case of thin insulation, unroll and staple the insulation on rafters or battens.

Insulation Tips

Replace the broken windows. It will not do any good to insulate the walls if the air can pass through a broken pane.

If necessary, install double glazing. If you want to use your garden shed as a guest room or as an office, it is essential to install double-glazed windows because the single-pane windows let out too much heat in the winter and can also let in too much during summer.

Plug the holes. If there are slots or holes in the roof, in the walls or between the walls and the floor, it is important to plug them. You can fill the small slits with tube silicone or putty. For larger holes, use expansive foam.

Inspect your garden shed when it rains. When it rains, inspect your garden shed for water infiltration. Install a weatherproof, slate, metal or fiberglass roof covering.

If it does not rain, you can still try to detect water infiltration by spraying the roof with a garden hose before inspecting the inside of the shelter for traces of moisture.

If necessary, apply an external covering. If you have a lot of slots to plug, laying an exterior cladding can be a good solution. To protect a garden shed from too low or too high temperatures, you must plug all the holes and insulate the walls and the roof properly. Inspect the walls: if you detect dark traces, this may indicate water infiltration.

Install a weatherproof door. Most garden sheds are sold with doors that are not weather resistant. If the door frame of your garden shed is not standard, you may need to invest in a custom door.
