Square and Compasses - This symbolic stone was removed from above the entrance to the Lambton Mills Masonic Temple erected by Mimico Lodge on the north side of Dundas Street in 1882.

 

Masonic Square and Compasses.

 

The Square and Compasses (or, more correctly, a square and a set of compasses joined together) is the single most identifiable symbol of Freemasonry. Both the square and compasses are architect's tools and are used in Masonic ritual as emblems to teach symbolic lessons. Some Lodges and rituals explain these symbols as lessons in conduct: for example, Duncan's Masonic Monitor of 1866 explains them as: "The square, to square our actions; The compasses, to circumscribe and keep us within bounds with all mankind".

 

However, as Freemasonry is non-dogmatic, there is no general interpretation for these symbols (or any Masonic symbol) that is used by Freemasonry as a whole.

These two symbols have been so long and so universally combined — to teach us, as says an early instruction, "to square our actions and to keep them within due bounds," they are so seldom seen apart, but are so kept together, either as two Great Lights, or as a jewel worn once by the Master of the Lodge, now by the Past Master—that they have come at last to be recognized as the proper badge of a Master Mason, just as the Triple Tau is of a Royal Arch Mason or the Passion Cross of a Knight Templar.

 

So universally has this symbol been recognized, even by the profane world, as the peculiar characteristic of Freemasonry, that it has recently been made in the United States the subject of a legal decision. A manufacturer of flour having made, in 1873, an application to the Patent Office for permission to adopt the Square and Compasses as a trade-mark, the Commissioner of Patents, .J. M. Thatcher, refused the permission as the mark was a Masonic symbol.

 

If this emblem were something other than precisely what it is—either less known", less significant, or fully and universally understood—all this might readily be admitted. But, Considering its peculiar character and relation to the public, an anomalous question is presented. There can be no doubt that this device, so commonly worn and employed by Masons, has an established mystic significance, universally recognized as existing; whether comprehended by all or not, is not material to this issue. In view of the magnitude and extent of the Masonic organization, it is impossible to divest its symbols, or at least this particular symbol—perhaps the best known of all—of its ordinary signification, wherever displaced, either as an arbitrary character or otherwise.

 

It will be universally understood, or misunderstood, as having a Masonic significance; and, therefore, as a trade-mark, must constantly work deception. Nothing could be more mischievous than to create as a monopoly, and uphold by the poser of lacy anything so calculated. as applied to purposes of trade. to be misinterpreted, to mislead all classes, and to constantly foster suggestions of mystery in affairs of business (see Infringing upon Freemasonry, also Imitative Societies, and Clandestine).

In a religious work by John Davies, entitled Summa Totalis, or All in All and the Same Forever, printed in 1607, we find an allusion to the Square and Compasses by a profane in a really Masonic sense. The author, who proposes to describe mystically the form of the Deity, says in his dedication:

Yet I this forme of formelesse Deity,

Drewe by the Squire and Compasse of our Creed.

In Masonic symbolism the Square and Compasses refer to the Freemason's duty to the Craft and to himself; hence it is properly a symbol of brotherhood, and there significantly adopted as the badge or token of the Fraternity.

Berage, in his work on the higher Degrees, Les plus secrets Mystéres des Hauts Grades, or The Most Secret Mysteries of the High Grades, gives a new interpretation to the symbol. He says: "The Square and the Compasses represent the union of the Old and New Testaments. None of the high Degrees recognize this interpretation, although their symbolism of the two implements differs somewhat from that of Symbolic Freemasonry.

 

The Square is with them peculiarly appropriated to the lower Degrees, as founded on the Operative Art; while the Compasses, as an implement of higher character and uses, is attributed to the Decrees, which claim to have a more elevated and philosophical foundation. Thus they speak of the initiate, when he passes from the Blue Lodge to the Lodge of Perfection, as 'passing from the Square to the Compasses,' to indicate a progressive elevation in his studies. Yet even in the high Degrees, the square and compasses combined retain their primitive signification as a symbol of brotherhood and as a badge of the Order."

Worshipful Master and Brethren: Let us behold the glorious beauty that lies hidden beneath the symbolism of the Square and Compass; and first as to the Square. Geometry, the first and noblest of the sciences, is the basis on which the superstructure of Masonry has been erected. As you know, the word "Geometry" is derived from two Greek words which mean "to measure the earth," so that Geometry originated in measurement; and in those early days, when land first began to be measured, the Square, being a right angle, was the instrument used, so that in time the Square began to symbolize the Earth. And later it began to symbolize, Masonically, the earthly-in man, that is man's lower nature, and still later it began to symbolize man's duty in his earthly relations, or his moral obligations to his Fellowmen. The symbolism of the Square is as ancient as the Pyramids. The Egyptians used it in building the Pyramids. The base of every pyramid is a perfect square, and to the Egyptians the Square was their highest and most sacred emblem. Even the Chinese many, many centuries ago used the Square to represent Good, and Confucius in his writings speaks of the Square to represent a Just man.

 

As Masons we have adopted the 47th Problem of Euclid as the rule by which to determine or prove a perfect Square. Many of us remember with what interest we solved that problem in our school days. The Square has become our most significant Emblem. It rests upon the open Bible on this altar; it is one of the three great Lights; and it is the chief ornament of the Worshipful Master. There is a good reason why this distinction has been conferred upon the Square. There can be nothing truer than a perfect Square--a right angle. Hence the Square has become an emblem of Perfection.

 

Now a few words as to the Compass: Astronomy was the second great science promulgated among men. In the process of Man's evolution there came a time when he began to look up to the stars and wonder at the vaulted Heavens above him. When he began to study the stars, he found that the Square was not adapted to the measurement of the Heavens. He must have circular measure; he needed to draw a circle from a central point, and so the Compass was employed. By the use of the Compass man began to study the starry Heavens, and as the Square primarily symbolized the Earth, the Compass began to symbolize the Heavens, the celestial canopy, the study of which has led men to think of God, and adore Him as the Supreme Architect of the Universe. In later times the Compass began to symbolize the spiritual or higher nature of man, and it is a significant fact that the circumference of a circle, which is a line without end, has become an emblem of Eternity and symbolizes Divinity; so the Compass, and the circle drawn by the Compass, both point men Heavenward and Godward.

 

The Masonic teaching concerning the two points of the Compass is very interesting and instructive. The novitiate in Masonry, as he kneels at this altar, and asks for Light sees the Square, which symbolizes his lower nature, he may well note the position of the Compass. As he takes another step, and asks for more Light, the position of the Compass is changed somewhat, symbolizing that his spiritual nature can, in some measure, overcome his evil tendencies. As he takes another step in Masonry, and asks for further Light, and hears the significant words, "and God said let there be Light, and there was Light," he sees the Compass in new light; and for the first time he sees the meaning, thus unmistakably alluding to the sacred and eternal truth that as the Heavens are higher than the Earth, so the spiritual is higher than the material, and the spiritual in man must have its proper place, and should be above his lower nature, and dominate all his thoughts and actions. That eminent Philosopher, Edmund Burke, once said, "It is ordained that men of intemperate passions cannot be free. Their passions forge the chains which bind them, and make them slaves." Burke was right. Masonry, through the beautiful symbolism of the Compass, tells us how we can be free men, by permitting the spiritual within us to overcome our evil tendencies, and dominate all our thoughts and actions. Brethren, sometimes in the silent quiet hour, as we think of this conflict between our lower and higher natures, we sometimes say in the words of another, "Show me the way and let me bravely climb to where all conflicts with the flesh shall cease. Show me that way. Show me the way up to a higher plane where my body shall be servant of my Soul. Show me that way."

Brethren, if that prayer expresses desire of our hearts, let us take heed to the beautiful teachings of the Compass, which silently and persistently tells each one of us,

 

"You should not in the valley stay

While the great horizons stretch away

The very cliffs that wall you round

Are ladders up to higher ground.

And Heaven draws near as you ascend,

The Breeze invites, the Stars befriend.

All things are beckoning to the Best,

Then climb toward God and find sweet Rest.”

 

The secrets of Freemasonry are concerned with its traditional modes of recognition. It is not a secret society, since all members are free to acknowledge their membership and will do so in response to enquiries for respectable reasons. Its constitutions and rules are available to the public. There is no secret about any of its aims and principles. Like many other societies, it regards some of its internal affairs as private matters for its members. In history there have been times and places where promoting equality, freedom of thought or liberty of conscience was dangerous. Most importantly though is a question of perspective. Each aspect of the craft has a meaning. Freemasonry has been described as a system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. Such characteristics as virtue, honour and mercy, such virtues as temperance, fortitude, prudence and justice are empty clichés and hollow words unless presented within an ordered and closed framework. The lessons are not secret but the presentation is kept private to promote a clearer understanding in good time. It is also possible to view Masonic secrecy not as secrecy in and of itself, but rather as a symbol of privacy and discretion. By not revealing Masonic secrets, or acknowledging the many published exposures, freemasons demonstrate that they are men of discretion, worthy of confidences, and that they place a high value on their word and bond.

Artist Statement

These watercolor paintings depict views of the environment within a 20-mile radius of where I have lived my life. The naturally occurring and humanly constructed environmental changes I have witnessed continue to be fascinating and instructive. The views found here call me to respond to their unsettling beauty and evidence of transformation.

I am particularly drawn to places where nature overcomes and reclaims –gradually or dramatically— imposed human constructs. These images are selected for the paintings because they are autobiographical metaphor.

Energetic marks in the composition create rhythmic structure and reveal interlaced spaces to express nature’s wild strength and resilience in response to destructive human intervention. Paper provides a transitory, variable and flexible support to present the connected elements. Color evokes the emotive qualities of natural experience.

These views no longer exist as they once were and these artworks have become memorials, stirring ideas of change and transformation.

David, The Psalmist

 

"The sweet psalmist of Israel." 2 Samuel 23:1

 

Among all the saints whose lives are recorded in Holy Scripture, David possesses an experience of the most striking, varied, and instructive character. In his history we meet with trials and temptations that are not found, as a whole, in other saints of ancient times, and as a result he provides us with a shadowy picture of our Lord. David knew the trials of all ranks and conditions of men. Kings have their troubles, and David wore a crown. The peasant has his cares, and David handled a shepherd's crook. The wanderer has many hardships, and David hid in the caves of Engedi. The captain has his difficulties, and David found the sons of Zeruiah too hard for him. The psalmist also faced trials from his friends; his counselor Ahithophel forsook him: "[He] who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me." (Psalm 41:9) His worst foes came from his own household: His children were his greatest affliction. The temptations of poverty and wealth, of honor and reproach, of health and weakness all tried their power upon him. He had temptations from without to disturb his peace and from within to mar his joy. David no sooner escaped from one trial than he fell into another, no sooner emerged from one season of despondency and alarm than he was again brought into the lowest depths and all God's waves and billows rolled over him. This is probably the reason that David's psalms are so universally the delight of experienced Christians. Whatever our frame of mind, whether ecstasy or depression, David has exactly described our emotions. He was an able master of the human heart because he had been tutored in the best of all schools-the school of heartfelt, personal experience. As we are instructed in the same school, as we grow mature in grace and in years, we increasingly appreciate David's psalms and find them to be "green pastures." (Psalm 23:2) My soul, let David's experience cheer and counsel you today.

At the Elizabeth Board of Education meeting of May 10 at Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28, Taneka Bowles presented Elizabeth Public Schools with a very generous donation of $25,000 on behalf of Taneka and Todd Bowles for Elizabeth’s Special Olympics program. This marks the fourth straight year the Bowles family has supported the district’s Special Olympics program, raising the total to $100,000 in donations.

 

The evening also took on a multicultural theme as the Board recognized the Cuban, Haitian, and Portuguese heritages.

 

In honor of Cuban heritage, Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28 Kindergarten students performed “Mambo numero 8” by Damaso Perez and “Mi Tierra” by Gloria Estefan and community members Julio Sabater, Miguel Socarras, and Marita De Varona were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community.

 

In honor of Haitian heritage, John E. Dwyer Technology Academy student Kerline Francois performed a lyrical solo to "Human" Written by Christine Perry and the Dwyer Technology Academy Haitian Club was recognized for its commitment to promoting the beauty of the Haitian culture through educational and social opportunities available within the school environment.

 

In honor of Portuguese heritage, Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy students Karina Almeida and Tiago Matos performed “Vira do Minho”, Danca E Cantares De Portugal from the Portuguese Instructive Social Club performed a Portuguese folklore dance, Portuguese world language teachers were recognized for their outstanding efforts to instill the passion of the Portuguese culture into our students, and the Elizabeth Portugal Day Pageant 2018-2019 Royal Family was recognized for their contributions to the Elizabeth community.

 

Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28 Principal Evelyn Rodriguez-Salcedo presented to the Board the approach she has taken to be able to address various issues that resulted in School No. 28 being designated a Focus School by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE). In April 2012, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s administration announced the final list of Priority, Focus, and Reward Schools as part of its new statewide accountability system, which included 183 Focus Schools. A Focus School is a school that has room for improvement in areas that are specific to the school. Raleigh Social Group had another instructive meeting at Stan Crocker's gallery in Raleigh downtown. Thanks to Tommy's wonderful extremely informative session, I came to know more of the effect of various lights in a studio photography. Tommy's radio flash transceiver was used on my camera to strobe all the lights (one overhead light at the back that outlines my black shirt from the black background and also outlines my hair :), 2 kicker lights at sides in the back and the main front side light, with a reflective surface on the opposite side) and Ranjith shot this portrait for me. Undoubtedly this is my favorite self-portrait.

 

Important things learned:

* Keep ISO 100 (least possible), shutter speed to 125 and aperture to f/16. Sticking to f/16 helps not 'out-focusing' any group member in case of studio group photography.

* For family group pics, keep the heads of the family members close to eachother to create an effect of emotion, closeness in the pic.

* Mom stays at the back, dad in the front.

* Try not to arrange all the subjects in the same plane, not in a straight line. Create depth (nearness/farness from the camera) and also difference in the head levels by tilting heads backward/forward/left/right way (I know :), I cannot elaborate this point in a more non-weird way).

The Square and Compasses (or, more correctly, a square and a set of compasses joined together) is the single most identifiable symbol of Freemasonry. Both the square and compasses are architect's tools and are used in Masonic ritual as emblems to teach symbolic lessons. Some Lodges and rituals explain these symbols as lessons in conduct: for example, Duncan's Masonic Monitor of 1866 explains them as: "The square, to square our actions; The compasses, to circumscribe and keep us within bounds with all mankind".

 

However, as Freemasonry is non-dogmatic, there is no general interpretation for these symbols (or any Masonic symbol) that is used by Freemasonry as a whole.

These two symbols have been so long and so universally combined — to teach us, as says an early instruction, "to square our actions and to keep them within due bounds," they are so seldom seen apart, but are so kept together, either as two Great Lights, or as a jewel worn once by the Master of the Lodge, now by the Past Master—that they have come at last to be recognized as the proper badge of a Master Mason, just as the Triple Tau is of a Royal Arch Mason or the Passion Cross of a Knight Templar.

 

So universally has this symbol been recognized, even by the profane world, as the peculiar characteristic of Freemasonry, that it has recently been made in the United States the subject of a legal decision. A manufacturer of flour having made, in 1873, an application to the Patent Office for permission to adopt the Square and Compasses as a trade-mark, the Commissioner of Patents, .J. M. Thatcher, refused the permission as the mark was a Masonic symbol.

 

If this emblem were something other than precisely what it is—either less known", less significant, or fully and universally understood—all this might readily be admitted. But, Considering its peculiar character and relation to the public, an anomalous question is presented. There can be no doubt that this device, so commonly worn and employed by Masons, has an established mystic significance, universally recognized as existing; whether comprehended by all or not, is not material to this issue. In view of the magnitude and extent of the Masonic organization, it is impossible to divest its symbols, or at least this particular symbol—perhaps the best known of all—of its ordinary signification, wherever displaced, either as an arbitrary character or otherwise.

 

It will be universally understood, or misunderstood, as having a Masonic significance; and, therefore, as a trade-mark, must constantly work deception. Nothing could be more mischievous than to create as a monopoly, and uphold by the poser of lacy anything so calculated. as applied to purposes of trade. to be misinterpreted, to mislead all classes, and to constantly foster suggestions of mystery in affairs of business (see Infringing upon Freemasonry, also Imitative Societies, and Clandestine).

In a religious work by John Davies, entitled Summa Totalis, or All in All and the Same Forever, printed in 1607, we find an allusion to the Square and Compasses by a profane in a really Masonic sense. The author, who proposes to describe mystically the form of the Deity, says in his dedication:

Yet I this forme of formelesse Deity,

Drewe by the Squire and Compasse of our Creed.

In Masonic symbolism the Square and Compasses refer to the Freemason's duty to the Craft and to himself; hence it is properly a symbol of brotherhood, and there significantly adopted as the badge or token of the Fraternity.

Berage, in his work on the higher Degrees, Les plus secrets Mystéres des Hauts Grades, or The Most Secret Mysteries of the High Grades, gives a new interpretation to the symbol. He says: "The Square and the Compasses represent the union of the Old and New Testaments. None of the high Degrees recognize this interpretation, although their symbolism of the two implements differs somewhat from that of Symbolic Freemasonry.

 

The Square is with them peculiarly appropriated to the lower Degrees, as founded on the Operative Art; while the Compasses, as an implement of higher character and uses, is attributed to the Decrees, which claim to have a more elevated and philosophical foundation. Thus they speak of the initiate, when he passes from the Blue Lodge to the Lodge of Perfection, as 'passing from the Square to the Compasses,' to indicate a progressive elevation in his studies. Yet even in the high Degrees, the square and compasses combined retain their primitive signification as a symbol of brotherhood and as a badge of the Order."

Worshipful Master and Brethren: Let us behold the glorious beauty that lies hidden beneath the symbolism of the Square and Compass; and first as to the Square. Geometry, the first and noblest of the sciences, is the basis on which the superstructure of Masonry has been erected. As you know, the word "Geometry" is derived from two Greek words which mean "to measure the earth," so that Geometry originated in measurement; and in those early days, when land first began to be measured, the Square, being a right angle, was the instrument used, so that in time the Square began to symbolize the Earth. And later it began to symbolize, Masonically, the earthly-in man, that is man's lower nature, and still later it began to symbolize man's duty in his earthly relations, or his moral obligations to his Fellowmen. The symbolism of the Square is as ancient as the Pyramids. The Egyptians used it in building the Pyramids. The base of every pyramid is a perfect square, and to the Egyptians the Square was their highest and most sacred emblem. Even the Chinese many, many centuries ago used the Square to represent Good, and Confucius in his writings speaks of the Square to represent a Just man.

 

As Masons we have adopted the 47th Problem of Euclid as the rule by which to determine or prove a perfect Square. Many of us remember with what interest we solved that problem in our school days. The Square has become our most significant Emblem. It rests upon the open Bible on this altar; it is one of the three great Lights; and it is the chief ornament of the Worshipful Master. There is a good reason why this distinction has been conferred upon the Square. There can be nothing truer than a perfect Square--a right angle. Hence the Square has become an emblem of Perfection.

 

Now a few words as to the Compass: Astronomy was the second great science promulgated among men. In the process of Man's evolution there came a time when he began to look up to the stars and wonder at the vaulted Heavens above him. When he began to study the stars, he found that the Square was not adapted to the measurement of the Heavens. He must have circular measure; he needed to draw a circle from a central point, and so the Compass was employed. By the use of the Compass man began to study the starry Heavens, and as the Square primarily symbolized the Earth, the Compass began to symbolize the Heavens, the celestial canopy, the study of which has led men to think of God, and adore Him as the Supreme Architect of the Universe. In later times the Compass began to symbolize the spiritual or higher nature of man, and it is a significant fact that the circumference of a circle, which is a line without end, has become an emblem of Eternity and symbolizes Divinity; so the Compass, and the circle drawn by the Compass, both point men Heavenward and Godward.

 

The Masonic teaching concerning the two points of the Compass is very interesting and instructive. The novitiate in Masonry, as he kneels at this altar, and asks for Light sees the Square, which symbolizes his lower nature, he may well note the position of the Compass. As he takes another step, and asks for more Light, the position of the Compass is changed somewhat, symbolizing that his spiritual nature can, in some measure, overcome his evil tendencies. As he takes another step in Masonry, and asks for further Light, and hears the significant words, "and God said let there be Light, and there was Light," he sees the Compass in new light; and for the first time he sees the meaning, thus unmistakably alluding to the sacred and eternal truth that as the Heavens are higher than the Earth, so the spiritual is higher than the material, and the spiritual in man must have its proper place, and should be above his lower nature, and dominate all his thoughts and actions. That eminent Philosopher, Edmund Burke, once said, "It is ordained that men of intemperate passions cannot be free. Their passions forge the chains which bind them, and make them slaves." Burke was right. Masonry, through the beautiful symbolism of the Compass, tells us how we can be free men, by permitting the spiritual within us to overcome our evil tendencies, and dominate all our thoughts and actions. Brethren, sometimes in the silent quiet hour, as we think of this conflict between our lower and higher natures, we sometimes say in the words of another, "Show me the way and let me bravely climb to where all conflicts with the flesh shall cease. Show me that way. Show me the way up to a higher plane where my body shall be servant of my Soul. Show me that way."

Brethren, if that prayer expresses desire of our hearts, let us take heed to the beautiful teachings of the Compass, which silently and persistently tells each one of us,

 

"You should not in the valley stay

While the great horizons stretch away

The very cliffs that wall you round

Are ladders up to higher ground.

And Heaven draws near as you ascend,

The Breeze invites, the Stars befriend.

All things are beckoning to the Best,

Then climb toward God and find sweet Rest.”

 

The secrets of Freemasonry are concerned with its traditional modes of recognition. It is not a secret society, since all members are free to acknowledge their membership and will do so in response to enquiries for respectable reasons. Its constitutions and rules are available to the public. There is no secret about any of its aims and principles. Like many other societies, it regards some of its internal affairs as private matters for its members. In history there have been times and places where promoting equality, freedom of thought or liberty of conscience was dangerous. Most importantly though is a question of perspective. Each aspect of the craft has a meaning. Freemasonry has been described as a system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. Such characteristics as virtue, honour and mercy, such virtues as temperance, fortitude, prudence and justice are empty clichés and hollow words unless presented within an ordered and closed framework. The lessons are not secret but the presentation is kept private to promote a clearer understanding in good time. It is also possible to view Masonic secrecy not as secrecy in and of itself, but rather as a symbol of privacy and discretion. By not revealing Masonic secrets, or acknowledging the many published exposures, freemasons demonstrate that they are men of discretion, worthy of confidences, and that they place a high value on their word and bond.

On their return to the hotel, the participants engaged in a session with the Women's Leadership Forum where they learned about committing themselves to their missions. In the evening, DC Impact Founder Carol Middleton led them in an instructive self-defense class.

On a recent quick trip to southwest Tennessee, the clouds gave me a real treat of plenty of anticrepuscular rays along with a nearly continuous glory halo. The anticrepuscular rays were visible against the ground from above, which is a bit of a unique perspective. If you're on the ground, anticrepuscular rays can generally only be seen after sunset. But from the air above the clouds, they can generally only be seen before sunset! Interestingly, the very clouds that are giving me the halo display would probably be giving someone else, situated at a different point, a view of their crepuscular rays. I simply can't see them behind the glory simply because the clouds are in my way.

 

One interesting point to note is that the anticrepuscular rays seem to point to the very center of the glory, the anti-solar point. In fact, geometrically, they do exactly that. In reality, though, they do not converge. They are all parallel to the line between my camera lens and the exact center of the glory. In addition to that, the rays intersect the surface of the earth long before even the illusion of their convergence can be realized.

 

I love photographs that show multiple atmospheric optical phenomena. They're often quite instructive as to the geometry of the situation, and help me visualize how the whole thing works. This one is no exception.

Rev. Gideon Draper, D.D., who died at the residence of his son, Rev. G. F. Draper [Gideon Frank Draper 1858-1951], 222. Bluff. Yokohama, on Sunday last, was interred in the Aoyama Cemetery, Tokyo, on Tuesday afternoon, December 10th. Funeral services were conducted both at Yokohama and in the Goucher Hall, Anglo-Japanese College [renamed Aoyama-Gakuin 青山学院 in 1927], Aoyama, the Rev. Dr. Meacham [ミーチャム George Marsden Meacham 1833-1919] conducting the former, and Rev. Julius Soper [1845-1937] the latter.

 

Dr. Draper and his wife reached Yokohama in October last, on a visit to their son. Dr. Draper was in very feeble health at the time, and, gradually growing weaker and weaker, passed away peacefully on the 8th inst. It will be remembered by our readers that Dr. Draper was invited about three years ago to become the Pastor of the Union Church, Yokohama. Not feeling physically equal to the task, he declined.

 

Dr. Draper has led a remarkably active life. He began his career as a lawyer, and for several years practised that profession in his native State, New York, with marked success. He gave up his practice however, and devoted himself to the study of Theology. In 1857 he entered the Ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and for over 32 years was a faithful, earnest, and scholarly preacher of the Gospel. He adorned his profession, and had much success in every pastoral charge under his care. His visited Europe three times during his life. At one time he was Pastor of the American Church in Geneva, for one year, and at other times he was temporary Pastor of Union Churches in Berlin, London, and St. Petersburg - always ready to work for the cause that he loved so well, when his physical condition was such as to allow him. He was also a frequent contributor to newspapers and magazines. His articles were always fresh and instructive.

Rev. Gideon Draper, D. D.

In the death of Dr. Gideon Draper the Methodist Episcopal Church loses one of her ripest scholars and a servant whose elevating influence was largely due to his varied culture. The readers of the Northern have for fifteen years been familiar with his spirit as reflected in his frequent and regular contributions to these columns. They have become acquainted with him, as a teacher of evangelical truth, as a close and intelligent observer of religious movements and enterprises, and as a discriminating judge of men who from time to time have commanded the attention of the Church. He was a careful, accurate and entertaining writer, and a most instructive and edifying preacher. Dr. Draper, whose father was a Methodist preacher, wan born in 1828 at Manchester, N. Y. He was graduated at Dartmouth College in 1849. For several years he practiced law at Canandaigua, N. Y.

 

He went to Europe in 1853, and while a student in Berlin was convened, and while a three years of study and travel in Europe, Egypt and the Holy Land he returned to New York, and in May, 1857, he joined the New York Conference. He spent about twenty-five years in the active ministry, including one year as Professor in Genesee College. He made several tours to and in Europe, and was one year pastor of the American Church in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1885-6 he served aa pastor of a church in London.

 

Dr. Draper was deeply interested in the cause of Christian missions, and was always prepared to speak or write instructively concerning them. His son, the Rev. Gideon F. Draper, is a missionary in Japan, at whose home in Yokohama he died Dec. 8, a few weeks after his arrival in that city. He had become very widely known through his journeys and his writings and was everywhere beloved.

A Coincidence.

Those who are interested in coincidences will find this quite remarkable. Our beloved friend, Rev. Gideon F. Draper, died on the 8th day of December last, when on a visit to his son in Yokohama, Japan. The day was Sunday. His father, Gideon Draper sr., died on the same day of the same month and the same day of the same week in 1861. The grandson of the last named, who writes us the facts from Japan, tells us that this coincidence of the days of the week and the days of the month, he believes, occurs only once in twenty-eight years.

The superior cortex of the posterior part of the left 5th rib is mottled and lucent compared to the adjacent and the contralateral ribs (review the CXR). A poorly defined, lucent or absent inferior posterior rib margin is an unreliable finding as ribs are normally thin here to accommodate the intercostal neurovascular bundle. However, an absent or abnormal superior posterior rib margin is usually suspicious. Loss of the ANTERIOR end of a rib is, however, a fairly common normal finding (see this case for an example).

At the Elizabeth Board of Education meeting of May 10 at Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28, Taneka Bowles presented Elizabeth Public Schools with a very generous donation of $25,000 on behalf of Taneka and Todd Bowles for Elizabeth’s Special Olympics program. This marks the fourth straight year the Bowles family has supported the district’s Special Olympics program, raising the total to $100,000 in donations.

 

The evening also took on a multicultural theme as the Board recognized the Cuban, Haitian, and Portuguese heritages.

 

In honor of Cuban heritage, Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28 Kindergarten students performed “Mambo numero 8” by Damaso Perez and “Mi Tierra” by Gloria Estefan and community members Julio Sabater, Miguel Socarras, and Marita De Varona were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community.

 

In honor of Haitian heritage, John E. Dwyer Technology Academy student Kerline Francois performed a lyrical solo to "Human" Written by Christine Perry and the Dwyer Technology Academy Haitian Club was recognized for its commitment to promoting the beauty of the Haitian culture through educational and social opportunities available within the school environment.

 

In honor of Portuguese heritage, Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy students Karina Almeida and Tiago Matos performed “Vira do Minho”, Danca E Cantares De Portugal from the Portuguese Instructive Social Club performed a Portuguese folklore dance, Portuguese world language teachers were recognized for their outstanding efforts to instill the passion of the Portuguese culture into our students, and the Elizabeth Portugal Day Pageant 2018-2019 Royal Family was recognized for their contributions to the Elizabeth community.

 

Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28 Principal Evelyn Rodriguez-Salcedo presented to the Board the approach she has taken to be able to address various issues that resulted in School No. 28 being designated a Focus School by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE). In April 2012, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s administration announced the final list of Priority, Focus, and Reward Schools as part of its new statewide accountability system, which included 183 Focus Schools. A Focus School is a school that has room for improvement in areas that are specific to the school. As part of the process, Focus Schools receive targeted and tailored solutions to meet the school’s unique needs. The types of Focus schools include those with low graduation rates, largest within-school gaps, and lowest subgroup performance.

 

As a result of this approach by Rodriguez-Salcedo and the team members of School No. 28, the NJDOE has announced that School No. 28 will be exiting Focus School status in June 2018.

 

During the meeting, the Board celebrated and recognized excellent achievements of members of the Elizabeth Public Schools Professional Learning Community and the greater Elizabeth community.

John Madejski Garden, named in honor of John Madejski, who funded the design, is known as a meeting point, resting place and home to a changing display of outdoor installations, and to many the heart of the V&A. The modern-day garden was designed in 2005 by landscape architect Kim Wilkie. The stepped, elliptical pool and water feature provide a serene reflection of the surrounding buildings while the lawn and planters impart a tranquil backdrop to the array of temporary outdoor displays. The design is based on the traditional simplicity of a garden courtyard with the drama and flexibility of a stage set. The garden design sits on the borderline between Modern and Postmodern. In its early days, a wide expanse of garden surrounded the South Kensington Museum, as the V&A was known before 1899. The lawns and trees belonged to the original house on the site, Brompton Park House, at one time the home of Queen Anne's gardener, Henry Wise. These gardens were gradually built over as the Museum expanded and today the enclosed garden courtyard, formed between 1857 and 1909, is a small reminder of the gardens which once filled most of the neighborhood that we now know as South Kensington. It was intended that a u-shaped arrangement would remain open to the south, with the entrance visible from Cromwell Road, but in the end the fourth side was filled in with an art library, completed in 1884 to enclose the courtyard. Viewing the buildings around the garden, visitors are treated to a wealth of decorative ornamentation – including terracotta modelling, mosaic and tiles – on each of the buildings' façades. The Museum's founding Director, Henry Cole, employed a team of decorative designers to apply painting, sculpture, mosaic and elaborate ironwork to the buildings, so that their exteriors were as beautiful and as instructive as the collections within them. Other sculptural details on the façades of the buildings are not carved but are modelled in terracotta. A clay-based ceramic, terracotta could be easily molded by hand or by tools, was more cost-effective and quicker to carve than other materials such as stone or marble. Reusable molds were used to produce many identical pieces, which saved money as each piece of sculpture or tile could be repeated many times using the same mold. The molds for the terracotta columns above the entrance, for instance, were reused for the façade of the Henry Cole Wing on Exhibition Road.

At its regularly scheduled meeting held on Monday, May 17, City Council approved a design contract for the future Tennis and Recreation Center, honored two companies for their generous donations to "green" initiatives, recognized the exemplary volunteer work of two Boy Scouts, appointed a Mayor Pro Tem and selected a former Councilman to serve out the unexpired term in District B.

District Court Judge James Shoemake administered oaths of office to Mayor Allen Owen and Councilmen Jerry Wyatt and Danny Nguyen, who were recently elected to serve two-year terms in the At-Large Position 1 and At-large Position 2 seats respectively. "We have some healing to do in this City," Mayor Owen poignantly remarked after the swearing-in. Acknowledging contention in some of the campaigns, he emphasized that no matter what Missouri City "will continue to be one of the greatest and safest places to live in America."

  

Here are some actions Council took during the meeting:

 

*Appointed Brett Kolaja as Mayor Pro Tem; he will preside if Mayor Owen is absent

 

*Selected Don Smith to serve out the remaining one-year term in District B. City Charter required Cynthia Lenton-Gary to automatically relinquish the seat after her unsuccessful bid for Mayor.

 

*Approved an amendment of the tax abatement agreement between the City and Global Geophysical to move the terms back one year from the original agreement to start with the year 2010. The growth of the project and bad weather pushed back the date of the final construction, which now includes five buildings and more than 110,000 square feet.

 

*Authorized the City Manager to contract with PBS&J of Houston for $71,888 for design services for the Tennis and Recreation Center. Their services will cover Phase 1 of the project, which should take about two months to be completed. It will include town meetings, facility and site assessments, cost-benefit analysis, conceptual plans, conceptual cost estimates and presentations to staff and Council.

 

*Authorized the City Manager to contract with Freese and Nichols Inc. for $151,777 for design services for the Quail Valley Golf Course Club House and Community Center. The agreement will cover Phase 1 of the project, which will include two public workshops, community meetings, cost estimates, exterior 3D renderings, a design of the architectural character and style of the new community center, and a schematic design based on community and stakeholder input.

 

*Awarded a contract for storm water management services for $39,900 to PBS&J of Houston for services related to the implementation of the third year of the storm water management plan, including inspections, staff training and testing services.

 

*Awarded a contract for mosquito spraying services for $55,000 to Cypress Creek Pest Control. Spraying for the season began April 2. The contract will include service until June 30, 2011, with renewal options for two additional years.

 

*Amended the Residential and Fire Codes to comply with State legislation that allows homebuilders more options while providing the same levels of safety.

 

*Authorized the City to submit a nomination to the Houston-Galveston Area Council for funding for an Access Management Study on Texas Parkway, which includes a 20 percent match from the City. A study is required prior to the design and construction of raised medians on Texas Parkway.

 

*Presented Golden Tree Awards to CenterPoint Energy and Apache Corp. for their commitment and contribution toward Missouri City's continuing efforts to "go green". CenterPoint partnered with the City to create the "Right Tree Trail" in Ridgeview Park, a first of its kind in the area. The Trail includes two instructive panels that provide information on planting trees that will not grow into power lines. Separately, the City recently received a grant of 250 new trees from Apache Corp. The trees, which have an estimated value of $6,250, will be used for reforestation and volunteer projects at Independence Park and Buffalo Run Park.

 

*Recognized two Boy Scouts, Brian Eaton and Ryan Kelly, for completing their Eagle Scout community projects. Eaton led a group of 40 volunteer scouts and parents who spent 160 collective hours cleaning up litter and planting 150 trees along the eastern bank of Sta-Mo Park pond. Kelly led a group of 30 volunteer scouts and parents in a project to plant 50 trees in Buffalo Run Park.

Either/Or presents compelling new works for unconventional ensemble formations rarely heard elsewhere.

 

At MIT, the experimental and fiercely virtuosic group is working with students to workshop their compositions in-progress, educating them in the intricacies of their instruments and proposing novel ways of composing. The residency culminates in Either/Or performing student compositions, an exciting and instructive opportunity for students to benefit from masterful contemporary musicians performing their work in public. Either/Or is also performing the work of MIT Associate Professor of Music Keeril Makan, recently described by The New Yorker as “an arrestingly gifted young American composer.”

 

This residency will work in parallel and overlapping ways with the residency of Robin Rimbaud (Scanner) and Stephen Vitiello, which explores sonic production primarily from the perspective of installation. During their residency, Either/Or will perform a concert focused on the works of Alvin Lucier, whose music at the intersection of concert work and installation provides a critical point of departure for the investigation of sound and space.

INFORMATION

The first service held at St. Anne’s was in 1965. The church was designed by Fred Branch and Louis Swayze. Its modern jewel-like story-telling stained glass windows are a waltz through the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, including the instructive windows of parables and miracles: education and symbolism done in light and brilliance to enjoy and learn. Te Flentop Organ was installed in 1966. Tis masterpiece will be discussed and emonstrated.

THE SOUND OF WARNING

How would the average Canadian find out a nuclear attack was on its way?

 

This omni-directional Canadian Line Materials air raid siren was one example of the approximately 1,700 erected across Canada during the Cold War. Make no mistake: this siren was loud. One similar siren sounded at over 130 decibels, powerful enough to turn fog into rain. Its distinctive rising and falling note signalled "take cover". Sheltered civilians would then tune in to their radios to follow instructions from a pre-recorded emergency broadcast.

 

Today, the government issues warnings through electronic devices like your cell phone, followed by an instructive radio broadcast.

Over 1800 attack warning sirens were deployed on poles and the rooftops of public buildings from the late 1950s to the end of the Cold War. They were located in every city in Canada and were to be used to sound the TAKE COVER warning upon detection of an enemy bomber or missile attack on North America.

 

There were three types of sirens ranging in loudness from 110 to 130 decibels. Some were fixed in direction and some rotated.

 

They were maintained (and tested) twice a year by military Signals (telecommunications) and Construction Engineering personnel.

At the Elizabeth Board of Education meeting of May 10 at Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28, Taneka Bowles presented Elizabeth Public Schools with a very generous donation of $25,000 on behalf of Taneka and Todd Bowles for Elizabeth’s Special Olympics program. This marks the fourth straight year the Bowles family has supported the district’s Special Olympics program, raising the total to $100,000 in donations.

 

The evening also took on a multicultural theme as the Board recognized the Cuban, Haitian, and Portuguese heritages.

 

In honor of Cuban heritage, Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28 Kindergarten students performed “Mambo numero 8” by Damaso Perez and “Mi Tierra” by Gloria Estefan and community members Julio Sabater, Miguel Socarras, and Marita De Varona were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community.

 

In honor of Haitian heritage, John E. Dwyer Technology Academy student Kerline Francois performed a lyrical solo to "Human" Written by Christine Perry and the Dwyer Technology Academy Haitian Club was recognized for its commitment to promoting the beauty of the Haitian culture through educational and social opportunities available within the school environment.

 

In honor of Portuguese heritage, Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy students Karina Almeida and Tiago Matos performed “Vira do Minho”, Danca E Cantares De Portugal from the Portuguese Instructive Social Club performed a Portuguese folklore dance, Portuguese world language teachers were recognized for their outstanding efforts to instill the passion of the Portuguese culture into our students, and the Elizabeth Portugal Day Pageant 2018-2019 Royal Family was recognized for their contributions to the Elizabeth community.

 

Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28 Principal Evelyn Rodriguez-Salcedo presented to the Board the approach she has taken to be able to address various issues that resulted in School No. 28 being designated a Focus School by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE). In April 2012, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s administration announced the final list of Priority, Focus, and Reward Schools as part of its new statewide accountability system, which included 183 Focus Schools. A Focus School is a school that has room for improvement in areas that are specific to the school. As part of the process, Focus Schools receive targeted and tailored solutions to meet the school’s unique needs. The types of Focus schools include those with low graduation rates, largest within-school gaps, and lowest subgroup performance.

 

As a result of this approach by Rodriguez-Salcedo and the team members of School No. 28, the NJDOE has announced that School No. 28 will be exiting Focus School status in June 2018.

 

During the meeting, the Board celebrated and recognized excellent achievements of members of the Elizabeth Public Schools Professional Learning Community and the greater Elizabeth community.

Note to myself. It's fun and instructive to take photos, but photos is something you take to look at the result later. You cannot capture the moment, it will fade, just as you cannot keep a flower fresh in your hand, it will wither and die. The world is more than light and shadow more than seeing. So I must also put my camera away from time to time, close my eyes and smell the flowers while they fresh.

Square and Compasses - This symbolic stone was removed from above the entrance to the Lambton Mills Masonic Temple erected by Mimico Lodge on the north side of Dundas Street in 1882.

 

Masonic Square and Compasses.

 

The Square and Compasses (or, more correctly, a square and a set of compasses joined together) is the single most identifiable symbol of Freemasonry. Both the square and compasses are architect's tools and are used in Masonic ritual as emblems to teach symbolic lessons. Some Lodges and rituals explain these symbols as lessons in conduct: for example, Duncan's Masonic Monitor of 1866 explains them as: "The square, to square our actions; The compasses, to circumscribe and keep us within bounds with all mankind".

 

However, as Freemasonry is non-dogmatic, there is no general interpretation for these symbols (or any Masonic symbol) that is used by Freemasonry as a whole.

These two symbols have been so long and so universally combined — to teach us, as says an early instruction, "to square our actions and to keep them within due bounds," they are so seldom seen apart, but are so kept together, either as two Great Lights, or as a jewel worn once by the Master of the Lodge, now by the Past Master—that they have come at last to be recognized as the proper badge of a Master Mason, just as the Triple Tau is of a Royal Arch Mason or the Passion Cross of a Knight Templar.

 

So universally has this symbol been recognized, even by the profane world, as the peculiar characteristic of Freemasonry, that it has recently been made in the United States the subject of a legal decision. A manufacturer of flour having made, in 1873, an application to the Patent Office for permission to adopt the Square and Compasses as a trade-mark, the Commissioner of Patents, .J. M. Thatcher, refused the permission as the mark was a Masonic symbol.

 

If this emblem were something other than precisely what it is—either less known", less significant, or fully and universally understood—all this might readily be admitted. But, Considering its peculiar character and relation to the public, an anomalous question is presented. There can be no doubt that this device, so commonly worn and employed by Masons, has an established mystic significance, universally recognized as existing; whether comprehended by all or not, is not material to this issue. In view of the magnitude and extent of the Masonic organization, it is impossible to divest its symbols, or at least this particular symbol—perhaps the best known of all—of its ordinary signification, wherever displaced, either as an arbitrary character or otherwise.

 

It will be universally understood, or misunderstood, as having a Masonic significance; and, therefore, as a trade-mark, must constantly work deception. Nothing could be more mischievous than to create as a monopoly, and uphold by the poser of lacy anything so calculated. as applied to purposes of trade. to be misinterpreted, to mislead all classes, and to constantly foster suggestions of mystery in affairs of business (see Infringing upon Freemasonry, also Imitative Societies, and Clandestine).

In a religious work by John Davies, entitled Summa Totalis, or All in All and the Same Forever, printed in 1607, we find an allusion to the Square and Compasses by a profane in a really Masonic sense. The author, who proposes to describe mystically the form of the Deity, says in his dedication:

Yet I this forme of formelesse Deity,

Drewe by the Squire and Compasse of our Creed.

In Masonic symbolism the Square and Compasses refer to the Freemason's duty to the Craft and to himself; hence it is properly a symbol of brotherhood, and there significantly adopted as the badge or token of the Fraternity.

Berage, in his work on the higher Degrees, Les plus secrets Mystéres des Hauts Grades, or The Most Secret Mysteries of the High Grades, gives a new interpretation to the symbol. He says: "The Square and the Compasses represent the union of the Old and New Testaments. None of the high Degrees recognize this interpretation, although their symbolism of the two implements differs somewhat from that of Symbolic Freemasonry.

 

The Square is with them peculiarly appropriated to the lower Degrees, as founded on the Operative Art; while the Compasses, as an implement of higher character and uses, is attributed to the Decrees, which claim to have a more elevated and philosophical foundation. Thus they speak of the initiate, when he passes from the Blue Lodge to the Lodge of Perfection, as 'passing from the Square to the Compasses,' to indicate a progressive elevation in his studies. Yet even in the high Degrees, the square and compasses combined retain their primitive signification as a symbol of brotherhood and as a badge of the Order."

Worshipful Master and Brethren: Let us behold the glorious beauty that lies hidden beneath the symbolism of the Square and Compass; and first as to the Square. Geometry, the first and noblest of the sciences, is the basis on which the superstructure of Masonry has been erected. As you know, the word "Geometry" is derived from two Greek words which mean "to measure the earth," so that Geometry originated in measurement; and in those early days, when land first began to be measured, the Square, being a right angle, was the instrument used, so that in time the Square began to symbolize the Earth. And later it began to symbolize, Masonically, the earthly-in man, that is man's lower nature, and still later it began to symbolize man's duty in his earthly relations, or his moral obligations to his Fellowmen. The symbolism of the Square is as ancient as the Pyramids. The Egyptians used it in building the Pyramids. The base of every pyramid is a perfect square, and to the Egyptians the Square was their highest and most sacred emblem. Even the Chinese many, many centuries ago used the Square to represent Good, and Confucius in his writings speaks of the Square to represent a Just man.

 

As Masons we have adopted the 47th Problem of Euclid as the rule by which to determine or prove a perfect Square. Many of us remember with what interest we solved that problem in our school days. The Square has become our most significant Emblem. It rests upon the open Bible on this altar; it is one of the three great Lights; and it is the chief ornament of the Worshipful Master. There is a good reason why this distinction has been conferred upon the Square. There can be nothing truer than a perfect Square--a right angle. Hence the Square has become an emblem of Perfection.

 

Now a few words as to the Compass: Astronomy was the second great science promulgated among men. In the process of Man's evolution there came a time when he began to look up to the stars and wonder at the vaulted Heavens above him. When he began to study the stars, he found that the Square was not adapted to the measurement of the Heavens. He must have circular measure; he needed to draw a circle from a central point, and so the Compass was employed. By the use of the Compass man began to study the starry Heavens, and as the Square primarily symbolized the Earth, the Compass began to symbolize the Heavens, the celestial canopy, the study of which has led men to think of God, and adore Him as the Supreme Architect of the Universe. In later times the Compass began to symbolize the spiritual or higher nature of man, and it is a significant fact that the circumference of a circle, which is a line without end, has become an emblem of Eternity and symbolizes Divinity; so the Compass, and the circle drawn by the Compass, both point men Heavenward and Godward.

 

The Masonic teaching concerning the two points of the Compass is very interesting and instructive. The novitiate in Masonry, as he kneels at this altar, and asks for Light sees the Square, which symbolizes his lower nature, he may well note the position of the Compass. As he takes another step, and asks for more Light, the position of the Compass is changed somewhat, symbolizing that his spiritual nature can, in some measure, overcome his evil tendencies. As he takes another step in Masonry, and asks for further Light, and hears the significant words, "and God said let there be Light, and there was Light," he sees the Compass in new light; and for the first time he sees the meaning, thus unmistakably alluding to the sacred and eternal truth that as the Heavens are higher than the Earth, so the spiritual is higher than the material, and the spiritual in man must have its proper place, and should be above his lower nature, and dominate all his thoughts and actions. That eminent Philosopher, Edmund Burke, once said, "It is ordained that men of intemperate passions cannot be free. Their passions forge the chains which bind them, and make them slaves." Burke was right. Masonry, through the beautiful symbolism of the Compass, tells us how we can be free men, by permitting the spiritual within us to overcome our evil tendencies, and dominate all our thoughts and actions. Brethren, sometimes in the silent quiet hour, as we think of this conflict between our lower and higher natures, we sometimes say in the words of another, "Show me the way and let me bravely climb to where all conflicts with the flesh shall cease. Show me that way. Show me the way up to a higher plane where my body shall be servant of my Soul. Show me that way."

Brethren, if that prayer expresses desire of our hearts, let us take heed to the beautiful teachings of the Compass, which silently and persistently tells each one of us,

 

"You should not in the valley stay

While the great horizons stretch away

The very cliffs that wall you round

Are ladders up to higher ground.

And Heaven draws near as you ascend,

The Breeze invites, the Stars befriend.

All things are beckoning to the Best,

Then climb toward God and find sweet Rest.”

 

The secrets of Freemasonry are concerned with its traditional modes of recognition. It is not a secret society, since all members are free to acknowledge their membership and will do so in response to enquiries for respectable reasons. Its constitutions and rules are available to the public. There is no secret about any of its aims and principles. Like many other societies, it regards some of its internal affairs as private matters for its members. In history there have been times and places where promoting equality, freedom of thought or liberty of conscience was dangerous. Most importantly though is a question of perspective. Each aspect of the craft has a meaning. Freemasonry has been described as a system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. Such characteristics as virtue, honour and mercy, such virtues as temperance, fortitude, prudence and justice are empty clichés and hollow words unless presented within an ordered and closed framework. The lessons are not secret but the presentation is kept private to promote a clearer understanding in good time. It is also possible to view Masonic secrecy not as secrecy in and of itself, but rather as a symbol of privacy and discretion. By not revealing Masonic secrets, or acknowledging the many published exposures, freemasons demonstrate that they are men of discretion, worthy of confidences, and that they place a high value on their word and bond.

Now a few words as to the Compass: Astronomy was the second great science promulgated among men. In the process of Man's evolution there came a time when he began to look up to the stars and wonder at the vaulted Heavens above him. When he began to study the stars, he found that the Square was not adapted to the measurement of the Heavens. He must have circular measure; he needed to draw a circle from a central point, and so the Compass was employed. By the use of the Compass man began to study the starry Heavens, and as the Square primarily symbolized the Earth, the Compass began to symbolize the Heavens, the celestial canopy, the study of which has led men to think of God, and adore Him as the Supreme Architect of the Universe. In later times the Compass began to symbolize the spiritual or higher nature of man, and it is a significant fact that the circumference of a circle, which is a line without end, has become an emblem of Eternity and symbolizes Divinity; so the Compass, and the circle drawn by the Compass, both point men Heavenward and Godward.

 

The Masonic teaching concerning the two points of the Compass is very interesting and instructive. The novitiate in Masonry, as he kneels at this altar, and asks for Light sees the Square, which symbolizes his lower nature, he may well note the position of the Compass. As he takes another step, and asks for more Light, the position of the Compass is changed somewhat, symbolizing that his spiritual nature can, in some measure, overcome his evil tendencies. As he takes another step in Masonry, and asks for further Light, and hears the significant words, "and God said let there be Light, and there was Light," he sees the Compass in new light; and for the first time he sees the meaning, thus unmistakably alluding to the sacred and eternal truth that as the Heavens are higher than the Earth, so the spiritual is higher than the material, and the spiritual in man must have its proper place, and should be above his lower nature, and dominate all his thoughts and actions. That eminent Philosopher, Edmund Burke, once said, "It is ordained that men of intemperate passions cannot be free. Their passions forge the chains which bind them, and make them slaves." Burke was right. Masonry, through the beautiful symbolism of the Compass, tells us how we can be free men, by permitting the spiritual within us to overcome our evil tendencies, and dominate all our thoughts and actions. Brethren, sometimes in the silent quiet hour, as we think of this conflict between our lower and higher natures, we sometimes say in the words of another, "Show me the way and let me bravely climb to where all conflicts with the flesh shall cease. Show me that way. Show me the way up to a higher plane where my body shall be servant of my Soul. Show me that way."

Brethren, if that prayer expresses desire of our hearts, let us take heed to the beautiful teachings of the Compass, which silently and persistently tells each one of us,

 

"You should not in the valley stay

While the great horizons stretch away

The very cliffs that wall you round

Are ladders up to higher ground.

And Heaven draws near as you ascend,

The Breeze invites, the Stars befriend.

All things are beckoning to the Best,

Then climb toward God and find sweet Rest."

Creating video interviews: you will need to consider the format of your video. There are four main types (top left, clockwise): subject talking straight to camera (directive, factual, authoritative), subject talking to off-camera interviewer (reflective, opinions), subject and interviewer in a two-shot (audience 'sitting in' on a discussion), no interviewer questions, but titles or other medium cut in between subject's responses to structure the video (instructive, factual, punchy).

In today's exercise we were given a vfb file containing five ready-drawn glyphs and six to eight characters that we each had to add to the font.

 

It was a fun exercise, and very instructive as we had to think through each others' design decisions, and explain to each other (without having any right answers) why certain glyphs worked or not, as well as which ones should lead the design. By the end of the day we had the alphabetic and numeral glyphs, more to be done tomorrow.

At the Elizabeth Board of Education meeting of May 10 at Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28, Taneka Bowles presented Elizabeth Public Schools with a very generous donation of $25,000 on behalf of Taneka and Todd Bowles for Elizabeth’s Special Olympics program. This marks the fourth straight year the Bowles family has supported the district’s Special Olympics program, raising the total to $100,000 in donations.

 

The evening also took on a multicultural theme as the Board recognized the Cuban, Haitian, and Portuguese heritages.

 

In honor of Cuban heritage, Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28 Kindergarten students performed “Mambo numero 8” by Damaso Perez and “Mi Tierra” by Gloria Estefan and community members Julio Sabater, Miguel Socarras, and Marita De Varona were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community.

 

In honor of Haitian heritage, John E. Dwyer Technology Academy student Kerline Francois performed a lyrical solo to "Human" Written by Christine Perry and the Dwyer Technology Academy Haitian Club was recognized for its commitment to promoting the beauty of the Haitian culture through educational and social opportunities available within the school environment.

 

In honor of Portuguese heritage, Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy students Karina Almeida and Tiago Matos performed “Vira do Minho”, Danca E Cantares De Portugal from the Portuguese Instructive Social Club performed a Portuguese folklore dance, Portuguese world language teachers were recognized for their outstanding efforts to instill the passion of the Portuguese culture into our students, and the Elizabeth Portugal Day Pageant 2018-2019 Royal Family was recognized for their contributions to the Elizabeth community.

 

Juan Pablo Duarte - José Julián Martí School No. 28 Principal Evelyn Rodriguez-Salcedo presented to the Board the approach she has taken to be able to address various issues that resulted in School No. 28 being designated a Focus School by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE). In April 2012, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s administration announced the final list of Priority, Focus, and Reward Schools as part of its new statewide accountability system, which included 183 Focus Schools. A Focus School is a school that has room for improvement in areas that are specific to the school. As part of the process, Focus Schools receive targeted and tailored solutions to meet the school’s unique needs. The types of Focus schools include those with low graduation rates, largest within-school gaps, and lowest subgroup performance.

 

As a result of this approach by Rodriguez-Salcedo and the team members of School No. 28, the NJDOE has announced that School No. 28 will be exiting Focus School status in June 2018.

 

During the meeting, the Board celebrated and recognized excellent achievements of members of the Elizabeth Public Schools Professional Learning Community and the greater Elizabeth community.

The CT shows a poorly-defined, heterogeneous and slightly hypodense thickening in the right lateral upper abdominal wall, centred in the internal oblique muscle layer, representing a complex collection of either blood (muscle tear, blunt trauma) or pus (much less likely; the patient was not clinically unwell).

 

Personal rant: perhaps this is the way modern medicine is heading, but it just seems wrong that a muscle tear in the abdominal wall should be diagnosed only after a biliary ultrasound, an abdominal CT "checking the pancreas spleen GB etc", at least 3-4 clinical consultations, and goodness only knows how many liver function, lipase, full blood and electrolyte blood tests... does anyone really think that a haematoma requiring no active treatment diagnosed at a cost of at least A$1,000 is a good way to spend public money? Or that it reflects well on clinical medical training and judgement?

The other alteration was even more drastic and involved the piercing (or taking down) of the North Wall - or what remained of it in order to extend the church by adding further space than that afforded by the 'chapel' and constructing a complete North aisle, whose roof was no higher than the sills of the now blocked three clerestory windows above the arcade. Presumably, this extension meant a new roof to the nave as well as that required for the new aisle. The clunch components of the two centre bays contrast very sharply with the dark brown austerity of the sandstone. It is interesting to note that the church pillars are somewhat similar to those in Higham Gobion Church and these are dated by Pevsner as C1300 and described as 'good work'. It would be fanciful to suppose the same masons carved and constructed the two arcades - the mouldings in Segenhoe being rounded and smooth compared with the angular chamfering of Higham Gobion. The two churches are not greatly different in size. It is not difficult, in so unpretentious a church to envisage the work involved: the quarrying, transport and setting of the new stone; the cutting and seasoning of the timber. By the first quarter of the 14th Century we have the Norman Church, deemed big enough but too dark (therefore made lighter), and the now enlarged nave with entrances on South and North. The "new aisle' would require windows - and it is possible to see exactly where they were put: later radical changes have meant the total disappearance of the jambs and heads except for the West

window which has been blocked up with sandstone lumps leaving only the 'frame' visible. A feature such as this is very instructive. Standing on the roadway to the North East of the church, the student will see other clear evidence of still later additions and blockings. Inside he will see the charming and clear cut niche in the East wall of the north aisle - which I remember bearing clear marks of medieval painting as do the jambs of the entrance to the rood loft. (How would one have reached the first step? Here is another question to stimulate the student - apart from question of the time of its installation.)

The windows large or small, new or old in those parts of the church we have examined are not the only ones. The outline of part of a large window is to be plainly seen to the left of the tower as you face West. It must have been set in the ancient West wall which at one time constituted the extremity of the '3 cell' structure. For how long this 'state of the church' continued is not easy to say Something like a major alteration took place when it was felt, once more, that the interior was insufficiently lit (from outside) for it was decided to raise the roof, literally, as this was done by adding a clerestory to the arcade wall (above the arches) and obviously by heightening the corresponding South wall. By standing at the west end of the church and looking at the west end of the north aisle

it is possible to see a further alteration i.e. the line of the other roof is not obscured by the additional masonry used when the aisle roof was raised. Apart from one or two other features, to which reference will be made, such was the shape and

plan of the church until very drastic modifications were made in the 18th Century. The high altar would have stood up against the east wall of the chancel; but as the wall was rebuilt in brick on the old foundations no trace of either its base or other details can be seen. If there was 4 Three or four beams lie on the nave floor. Other beams as I recall from visits on and off from 1932 were soft wood which soon rotted once the slates had gone and the lath and plaster fallen

a piscina and/or sedilia then they were obliterated by the brick base of the window immediately above where it would have been.

March 9, 2020 - Mid-Century Engineering Lab Renovation/Addition: An Energy-Efficient Model

Creating a sustainable, energy-efficient building expansion/renovation has become one of the most important goals of Phase 1 of the Ohio State University Advanced Materials Corridor project. The project can be considered an instructive prototype for improving the many aging engineering and research buildings throughout Ohio and the Midwest. The Mars G. Fontana Laboratories, currently under construction at a prominent location on The Ohio State University’s main campus, is a complete renovation and large addition to a 1960s lab building. When completed, it will be a 127,000 SF biomedical and materials engineering building. It is the first phase of the Biomedical and Materials Engineering Complex, which will be an interconnected series of existing renovated buildings and new construction providing efficient teaching and research spaces. As a result of co-locating two highly ranked engineering departments, the new lab has been designed to a high level of operational and energy efficiency. Pursuing a goal of LEED Silver, the predicted EUI of 190 kbtu/sf/yr results in an energy savings exceeding 40% when compared to national benchmarks for the building type. In recognition of water as a valuable resource the users were educated about the impacts of cooling scientific equipment with once-through domestic water and opted for a process chilled water system to meet the scientific equipment needs.

 

DesignColumbus was held this year for the first time at the LEED Certified Mitchell Hall on the campus of Columbus State Community College. Mitchell Hall is the New Home of the Columbus State's Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts Program. DesignGroup a Columbus/Pittsburgh firm was the building architect.

 

The same day as our event, Mike DeWine, Governor of the State of Ohio declared a state of emergency for the entire state and began shutting things down due to COVID-19. Columbus State took precautions with lots of hand sanitizing stations located throughout the building.
