Flythrough, for instance, is a model based on the practice’s Telephone House proposal, into which a USB camera has been inserted. The camera moves along a set path through the model to show off the space in the style of an architecture walkthrough video, projecting its findings on a nearby screen. The twist, however, is that the model has been built entirely to facilitate its video – huge chunks of the building that would remain unseen in the video have simply not been built, with upper elements of the structure instead propped up on spindles to reveal the void below. It feels a visually inventive means of critiquing the manner in which architecture is mediated through images, and the display also gains spice from the real-world sustainability debate surrounding Telephone House, which proposes to demolish an existing building in favour of a new build. What within our current practice and discourse is hollow, what meaningful? Flythrough provides an elegant means of accessing these issues.

Supermodels - an exhibition of super architectural models by the Piercy&Co studio - opens 25 November at Regent Quarter, Kings Cross. Piercy&Co will install eight moving and animated models across the eerie setting of an empty central London building site. Supermodels represents the distillation of 20 years of the studio’s design thinking around the importance of the haptic, sensorial and experiential in architecture.
The mechanical automata, projection mapping, sound, light and scent employed by Piercy&Co in Supermodels are not the everyday techniques and products of an architectural project. Rather, they are a creative body of work and an experiment in how far the model can be pushed as a tool for communicating architectural ideas. The models were made over a five year period in Piercy&Co's London studio by the architectural team, between and around projects.
Each super model is based on a building by Piercy&Co - some built, some unbuilt - and abstracted to capture the kernel of the idea behind the building. The ‘coming alive’ of the models through film, sound and movement plays into the mysterious allure of objects with a miniature life of their own - the dolls house, the cuckoo clock, the model railway. The evocation of delight is intentionally egalitarian - an exploration of a mode of architectural communication that is ageless and universal. Supermodels seek to reconnect digital and physical worlds through a childlike sense of wonder and unfiltered joy.

The first instance of litter encountered on my excursion through the entire area. What is noteworthy is the almost total absence of trash throughout the entire area, with the exception of a very few pieces of largely bottles, cups, soda cans and blown plastic supermarket bags found in the area just inside the retaining wall along the south side of the Fuller Parkway west of the waterway.

There are many instances where the linear embankment fosse was filled in (here on the left hand side of the partly levelled main embankment) from earth cut away from the main and outer-lip embankments. In such instances the full 60 ft out-to-out width of the classic Belgic defensive system linear embankment was preserved. Items were found buried in some dykes such as the very large chalice wrapped in cloth in a dyke near the medieval monastery of Derrynamanagh several miles north of Turoe.

Through abstractions of architectural structures my images explore the contemporary visual rhetoric where the virtual and material collide. Throughout history painting is used as a vehicle to describe spaces and locations that do not actually exist. Now, we are confronted with new digital tools that are shaping the character of visual culture. In my work, digital methods and virtual space are confronted with the resistance and limitations of physical materials. The resulting images define structures that are synthetic but are rooted in a logic that is informed by actual visual experience. As methods of image making evolve we are confronted with new visual qualities that affect the way we see and consequently create models of “our world”. Through digital technology, strategies such as tiling, cutting, pasting, layering, and filtering have come to define and shape the character of the images in our visual culture. When these new systems combine with the conventions of painting, potent and exciting opportunities arise to both deconstruct and expand this contemporary visual.
You probably know the traditional story about serendipitous innovation - that in the world of science, it's the accidental discovery, the unplanned moment, the sudden eureka instance that has led to great inventions. Things such as penicillin, Post-It Notes, and Velcro. The concept of random exploration without a purpose has long served the world of science well.
But in a world that is now defined by fast-moving technology, it's not just accidental discoveries that matter - it's the unplanned acceleration of new concepts that can matter. In a world dominated by new technologies such as AI, 3D printing, drone technology, advanced materials science, and other trends, serendipity matters. Many organizations know that new leading-edge technologies will increasingly come to define their future, and yet they aren't quite certain how - and so the best idea is to invest in the future with uncertainty defining the strategy.
Smart leaders know that the way around this is through serendipitous -innovation-on-purpose - let's call it the intentional accidental discovery. They seek to set their innovation energies on fire by encouraging their younger, interactive generation to explore opportunities for the digital, disruptive future through what I've come to call an Xbox room!
I also wrote about this some time ago in a separate post.
`Why? Because this generation gets it, knows how to innovate, and is the most powerful force for change in our world today. Consider the reality:
- half of the global population is under the age of 25
- we know they are globally wired, entrepreneurial, collaborative, and change-oriented
- and they are now now driving rapid business model change, and industry transformation as they move into executive positions
With that reality, organizations are realizing they should allow this generation to light their creative energies on fire, even if they aren't sure as to what they might do or where their efforts might go! The idea is to set them up with an innovation facility by which they can explore and accelerate the adoption of leading digital tools throughout the organization that can accelerate innovation efforts, provide for better collaboration and so much more. They can do so without the need to establish specific goals or to achieve certain budget metrics - spend away, figure things out, and we're sure it will pay off somehow.
Case in point: I spent some time in St. Louis with Amsted Rail: they manufacture the 'bogies' which are the wheel-undercarriage assemblies found on railcars. It was a thrill for my wife and me to have a tour of their manufacturing facility before my talk to see what they are doing to realign themselves to opportunities for innovation in manufacturing. And the tour included what they call their iLab -- or, what I would call for the fun of it, an Xbox room! In this facility, they are continually examining a variety of ideas as to how to continue to move the organization forward. This includes exploring a variety of ideas and technologies, including:
- state-of-the-art brainstorming centers to facilitate ideas colliding from all corners of our company
- real-time employee collaboration tools across geographically diverse sites (to promote "a collision of ideas")
- how to use connected SMART Boards to simultaneously write/draw/share over any application using "digital ink"
- 3D scanning/modeling systems to enhance product R&D and quality capabilities
- advanced tensile testing techniques for enhanced product strength & durability
I had a chance to chat with the young fellows in the Xbox room -- and listen to their ideas. It's obvious its a rocket engine for innovative thinking!
That's but one example: the more I witness what organizations are doing to accelerate innovation, the more I discover some sort of 'Xbox room.' I commented on the same type of thing when speaking at a major conference on the future of trucking in Phoenix. While on stage, I spoke about a company in Winnipeg, Canada -- Bison Trucking. They've set up a facility to encourage younger staff to explore how to align the fast pace of technological change in trucking to opportunities for digital technologies -- read an extensive blog post about their efforts in the post Trend: In Trucking, Aircraft Control Towers Are the New Offices.
There are plenty of others - Xbox rooms seem to be springing up everywhere!
Here's what you need to think about:
- you should set up a digital facility with all kinds of 'toys' relevant to your industry, and set the creative energies of a group of young staff free to explore
- don't set any specific goals, objectives or deliverables on the project -- simply set it free to explore!
- explain the purpose and mission of the group to the rest of the organization, and encourage them to bring unique problems to the group
Go ahead - make an Xbox room!
I've got an event with a construction company in a few weeks and was pleased to discover a young fellow who seems to have the same role!
Innovation that comes about by accident can be critical in a fast future. Organizations that have a culture of rigidity and control, where experimentation and risk-taking are discouraged, never quite succeed as quickly as those who do not. They have a lot of siloed departments and a lack of cross-functional collaboration; a focus on short-term results and immediate returns, rather than long-term innovation through accidental discovery; a lack of diverse viewpoints and ideas, and more of a homogeneity of thinking; and they don't devote enough resources for experimentation and exploration. This means that they lack an openness to new ideas and different perspectives, and thereby avoid the opportunities that can come from serendipitous discovery and unexpected opportunities.
Avoid this by encouraging frivolous innovation; investing in leading technologies without knowing of a specific return; being prepared to learn from failure; letting employees pursue their hobbies and passions; encouraging curiosity and offbeat ideas; learning to encourage projects that have uncertain goals and unknown outcomes. Consider this in the context of AI - we know it is going to have a profound impact but aren't quite certainly exactly what that will be. Hence, with AI, adopt a mindset that 'we don't know where we are going but we are making great time!"
If you aren't doing this - if your leadership style;e demands that every invested moment achieve some specific goal, some certain return, some absolute objective - you won't be terribly well prepared for the future.

Samy’s Camera has a knack for selecting unique buildings to call its operations home. For instance, Samy’s Culver City store, located at 4411 Sepulveda Blvd, was once the popular hobby store, Allied Model Trains. In business for nearly 70 years, Allied Trains is a half-block-long replica of Los Angeles' Union Station. According to the Los Angeles Times, the hobby shop attracted both locals and famous names from the golden age of Hollywood. Frank Sinatra was one of them, who had a building shaped like a train station at his Rancho Mirage estate. Allied’s former owner, Allen Drucker, had even visited Sinatra’s home on a number of occasions. Having a store resembling Union Station sure makes a location easy to spot; not to mention the 500 square-foot working model train set still found inside. However, Samy’s Los Angeles art deco-style building is an unofficial landmark in the Central Los Angeles area. The great thing about buildings is that there must be a paper trail; and, to our surprise, paperwork for 431 S Fairfax dates back to October 9, 1930. An application for the erection of buildings revealed that the location was being constructed as a retail loft building and furniture store. the architect, or in this case, the architect film is listed: Austin & Ashley. Austin and Ashley, Architects, operated in Los Angeles, CA between 1929-1935. In six short years, John C. Austin, Frederick M. Ashley would make their mark on the history of Los Angeles. Ever heard of the Griffith Observatory? For a number of years, 431 S. Fairfax was left unfinished due to the Depression. However, construction resumed in 1937. An application to complete, among other tasks, floors, plumbing, and a passenger elevator was filed by Green & Hinkle, a furniture company. Following the building’s completion and the duration of Green & Hinkle’s ties with the location, a number of companies would file in and out between 1942 and 1966: 1942: Douglas Aircraft Company, who has a long history with the Santa Monica Airport and is most famous for the "DC" series of commercial aircraft, uses the building as an office space. Once President of Karl’s Shoe Stores, the largest privately held U.S. retail shoe store chain at one time, Harry Karl’s private life was just as much in the headlines as his professional life. He was married to two actresses, Debbie Reynolds following her highly publicized split from Eddie Fisher, and Marie McDonald, and to Joan Cohn, the widow of a motion picture pioneer Harry Cohn. Karl applied for use of the parking lot at 431 S. Fairfax in 1966 before taking over the building and its 13 offices in 1971. The building would see a few more changes between the 70's and the dawn of the 21st century. In 2002, Samy's Camera applied for a certificate of occupancy, making 431 S. Fairfax its new Los Angeles location following a devastating fire during the L.A. Riots that consumed the original La Brea and Beverly Blvd. location. After 14 years on the corner of Fairfax Ave. and Drexel, the Los Angeles location houses 3 floors of retail space, including a pro video department, rental department, service bureau, and a photo lab. 2016 marks Samy's Camera's 40th Anniversary.

The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan is the highest court instance and final court of appeal of three-staged judicial system in Azerbaijan. Established in pursuant Article 131 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Article 77 of the Law "on Courts and Judges". The Supreme Court has competence to carry out justice on civil (including administrative and economic disputes), criminal disputes and other cases related to the execution of general or specialized courts. Despite being established in Baku, its jurisdiction applies to the entire territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
History
History of the modern judicial system in Azerbaijan started from the establishment of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on 28 May 1918.
Starting from 1990s fundamental legal-judicial reforms have been carried out in Azerbaijan under the leadership of Heydar Aliyev, e.g. establishment of new three-stage judicial system, adopting several Codes (Land Code, Civil Code, Criminal Code, Code of Administrative Offence, Housing Code, etc). Judicial-Legal Council, contained of representatives of legislative, judicial and executive branches, was formed and actively took part in selection of the judges to the different instances including Supreme Court by testing or examination and interview.

Authorities of the Plenum
The Plenum of the Supreme Court is operating in the following structure the; Chairman of the Supreme Court, his deputy, chairpersons of board and judges. The members that included in the Plenum of the Supreme Court have equal rights within their authority. The Plenum of the Supreme Court hears the information of the chairmen of the courts on the issues related to on judicial practice of application of legislation in courts of the Republic of Azerbaijan and reports of Chairman of the Supreme Court, its chairperson and chairmen, chairmen of appellate courts, chairman of the Supreme Court of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and other general and specialized court chairmen about the status of the administration of justice issues, reviews materials about generalization of the practice of court and analysis of judicial statistics. Additionally, based on the proposal of the Chairman of the Supreme Court, it decides members of the Judicial Collegium. The Court approves the Statute and the Structure of the Scientific Advisory Board on the basis of recommendation of the Chairman of Supreme Court. It also has right to request Considers the request The Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan Republic in accordance with The Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan Republic. By taking into account the request of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on dismissal of the judges of the Republic of Azerbaijan in accordance with Article 128 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Court submits the relevant opinion to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan within 30 days of the request; Clarify the courts on matters relating to court practice in accordance with Article 131 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan; in cases and in accordance with the procedure prescribed by law, it deals with examine cases involving additional cassation or new cases of discrimination and violation of rights and freedoms the on the basis of the presentation of the Chairman of Supreme Court, the protest by the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Azerbaijan or the complaints of defending side. Moreover, in accordance with Article 96 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, reviews and make decisions on issues related to applying to the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan by legislative initiatives. The court is also have accountability to accept the oath of the judges of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In the cases that determined by the law, it considers complaints about the decisions of the Judicial-Legal Council.
Working principles of the Plenum
The working principles of the Plenum have been defined according to the Article 80 of the Law of the Azerbaijan Republic (“On Courts and Judges”). The Supreme Court is convened approximately 4 times in a year under the leadership of the Chairman of the Supreme Court. The chairman of the Supreme Court of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the chairmen of the courts of Appeal, the General Prosecutor of the Republic of Azerbaijan and other heads of the relative state bodies attend in the plenary sessions of the Supreme Court. During the sessions, the Court ensure the participation of the defense in the cases of new cases of violation of rights and freedoms and newly discovered cases. The members and also participants of the sessions Plenum are notified before the starting date of the meeting (not less than 10 days before). The participants are also provided with the topic of the discussion and relevant materials. In order to be effectual, not less than 2/3 of its members must participate in the sessions. The decisions are accepted due to voting results signed by the chairman of the meeting. The Office of the Supreme Court organizes Plenum meetings, and ensure implementation of the decisions of the Plenum.
