Breeding behaviour

Where possible, the birds excavate a nesting burrow into the soil. Sometimes they will make use of Manx shearwater or rabbit burrows. Where burrowing is not possible, the birds nest under boulders or in cracks and cavities in cliffs.

The birds defend the nesting site and its immediate surround, and use it in subsequent years. Puffins lay only a single egg, in late April or early May. Both parents incubate it for 36-45 days, and they share the feeding duties until the chick is ready to fledge.

The fledging period is very variable, ranging from 34 to 60 days, depending on the area and year.

Adult birds desert their young shortly before they are ready to leave the nest. The timing of the breeding in puffin colonies is highly synchronised, and so the departure of all adults takes place within a few days.

The young birds leave their nest burrow and make their way to the sea, normally under cover of darkness to avoid predators. In some colonies, for instance in Iceland, nearby bright lights confuse the young birds, which then fly into the light and end up on city streets.

Puffins usually reach breeding age at 5-6 years old, and often live for 20 years.

In the instance this airplane passed my head above Bonn's marketplace I didn't have enough time to adjust my camera (set all manually). Luckily the focus was also set to manual focus so I just went for it, pointed my camera upwards and pressed the shutter button. *Click*

The settings from before worked out and because of the manual focus no additional focusing time was needed.

Over the summer I came across two instances of night photography that stuck in my craw. A friend started posting images from night time alley ways where he lived. Simple but effective images of quiet alley ways with deep shadows, garage doors, garbage cans, and orange diffused street lights. Then a photographer named Pete Mauney came across my socials feed with his night time long exposure lightning bug photography and I was obsessed. The thing is, I wasn’t really sure HOW to shoot clear crisp bright night time photos. I have a lot of basic knowledge but thanks to memory issues and a head bump remembering that stuff is almost impossible. I started doing some research on YouTube, Google, and Reddit. I came away with a general idea of next steps that aligned to some photography basics I remembered from my film shooting days and this morning was my first foray into those experiments. The light trail stuff was just something I had fun with in the past with sparklers… also its fun to spin around in the street alone in the dark morning quiet with a flashlight laughing. I’ve learned some things and don’t have the words for questions on some others, but I’m going to write down what I can and figure it out and try again.

There used to be many honey bees on this giant agastache flowering plant, but after the Government initiated it's mosquito abatement program this summer, they have mostly disappeared. For instance, I found only two honey bees on this plant today (pictured above is one of the surviving honey bees). Before their program there were dozens of honey bees and many other pollinators. While there are still many bumble bees, their numbers were down considerably.

Frequently there were instances where publishers (books, magazines and the park itself) required illustration through photographs, and I was always the go-to person. Highlights include being featured in the Anchorage News and working along side the Denali Education Center and the Park's PR group.

An instance where Lightroom proved better at shadow recovery. With darktable, I had to resort to tone mapping, which resulted in weird artifacts (look closely at the bottom of the'V').

These are my photos of Lycoris Squamigera. Commonly know as the Resurrection Lily...I just discovered that this is it's proper identification. For the 17 years I have lived here, I just called them Stick Lilies. It pays to research things sometimes.

I've been shooting with a single focal length (50mm in this case) concerning myself mainly with the changing light through the day and how it interacts with the things I see on a daily basis. I don't view the shots until the card is full. The best are then selected from the card unedited and uncropped, exactly as they were shot.

On Friday, attorney Brian Panish, who is representing the estate of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was fatally shot on the set of the Western “Rust” shot in New Mexico, slammed his behavior. The estate is suing actor Alec Baldwin and several others including the armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who has in turn sued the supplier of ammunition to the set. Baldwin’s attorneys had earlier filed for an arbitration demand. They said that Halyna Hutchins had told Baldwin to point a gun at her and fire. It mentioned that both of them, the actor and the cinematographer had believed the gun to be a “cold” one, meaning a gun that had no live ammunition.Attorneys for Baldwin also claimed that he was shielded from financial responsibilities related to her death. They also maintained that the $7 million film could not be completed as Hutchins’ estate had filed a lawsuit.

In the aftermath of the deadly shooting at the set of Rust both the 63 year old actor and Matt Hutchins Halyna's husband had shared personal texts and more. Baldwin had tried to convince the cast and crew to continue shooting so the proceeds could to be used to help her family. The filing also said that the incident that took place at the set of Rust was “a rare instance when the system broke down” and although someone should be held legally culpable, that person was “not Alec Baldwin.” It also noted that October 21, 2021 was the worst day in the actor's life and the day had and would continue “to haunt Baldwin.
