Refugiados ("Refugees") is a monument and instance of public art in Madrid, Spain. Located at a water pond of the Paseo de Recoletos, it is dedicated to migrants and refugees.
History and description
The idea for the erection of a monument to immigrants and refugees was passed by the government board presided by Manuela Carmena in 2018. According to municipal government spokesperson Rita Maestre, it was a way to convey the recognition that refugees and immigrants "have built the city of Madrid".
Designed by Brazilian artist Bel Borba, the project was an adaptation of the author's work Homage to Migrants (presented to the Biennale de Montreux exposition at Lake Geneva), repurposed to fit a location at one of the water ponds of the Paseo de Recoletos, featuring a 180 x 100 x 180 cm concrete block with veins of granite, over which the bronze ensemble would stand. The 960 kg bronze sculptural ensemble consists of 16 seated figures, male and female alike—some of them carrying babies—wearing life vests while waiting for assistance.
The works on the installment of the monument started on 13 May 2019.

Another instance of the Political Working Group at Camp 50 seizing the initiative and requesting a lecture from a German author whose writing had come to their attention. The Working Group's chairman by this time was 22-year-old Wilton Park alumnus and “Aufbauwille” editor Alfred Jacobs, described in a June 1947 inspection report as “intelligent, reliable … and … very outspoken”. The invited speaker, Bernhard Menne (1901-1968), had been a journalist and publicist in pre-war Germany. Politically active on the left, he was forced to escape to Prague in 1933. There he completed his book on the Krupp military-industrial complex, which was published in Switzerland in 1937. In 1939 he came to the UK, acting as secretary to the Thomas Mann Society and working for the group of exiled German poets, essayists and novelists – the “PEN Club” - in London.
The theme of Bernhard Menne's lecture to the POWs, delivered to approximately 200 men at the Myerscough and Penketh Hostels and in the main camp over 3 days in September 1947, was the “Future of German Industry”. He found his listeners to be “friendly and intelligent”. Myerscough, however, was in the process of being dissolved and “only about 10 listeners attended” at that location.
“A very good lecturer” according to a separate report by the Camp 50 commandant Lt Col W Glendinning, Menne subsequently returned to Germany, becoming editor-in-chief of the “Welt am Sonntag” newspaper in Hamburg.

Some reflections on sexual violence and the struggles against it .
Kavita Krishnan .
Following a series of instances of rape in West Bengal, the Chief Minister first denied the rapes, cast aspersions on the morals and veracity of the complainants, and then announced restrictions on timings of bars, nightclubs etc. In Gurgaon, following the gang rape of a woman employee of a nightclub, the Haryana Government first announced a ban on womens employment in late-night jobs. When this diktat was faced with outrage, the Government clarified that it was not seeking to ban women working late, but it would monitor womens employment in such jobs to ensure their safety. The Delhi Police Chief recently said that women who chose to go out, unescorted by a brother or husband, at 2 am should not complain of rape. The DGP of Andhra Pradesh said recently women provoked men to rape them by wearing fashionable clothing. Mamata Sharma, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) said in a recent interview about violence on women, that women should take their Indian culture along with them when they leave their homes, in order to protect themselves. (It is a little difficult to fathom her reasoning, since she was commenting on the fact that most rapes are perpetrated by family members.) These instances (which are not aberrations but part of a persistent pattern) raise questions about the States and societys response to sexual violence, and about how sexual violence, and violence on women, is understood. This article is an activists attempt to think out loud about some of these issues, and their implications for the womens movement and struggles for social transformation. .
.
Why is rape taboo, while other acts of violence against women are not? .
Rape is taboo in society. There is a widely shared moral disgust and outrage at the idea of rape. .
However, other forms of violence against women are not taboo in the same way. For instance, in India, domestic violence continues to enjoy a great deal of social sanction, as does sex-selective abortion, female infanticide, mental and physical torture by in-laws, dowry harassment and killings, coercion and violence against women making self-choice marriages, and so on. Why, then, do other forms of violence on women not generate the kind of moral outrage that rape does? What is the social meaning and connotation of rape? Rape is, of course, understood as sex by force (as indicated by the Hindi word for rape, balatkar). But I would argue that there is a slippage between the word rape and the social connotations it conjures up. There is a fundamental misrecognition or misdirection that is at work every time we talk about rape. Rape is widely understood as illegitimate sex. Not as sex against the will of another, but as taking what is not yours, as sex with a woman to whose sexual and reproductive labour you are not entitled. Therefore, rape is seen as a soiling or spoilage of a womans worth as an asset to be enjoyed by her legitimate sexual partner. Isnt this why marital rape is considered a contradiction in terms in Indian law? According to Indias rape law, sexual intercourse by a man with his own wife, the wife not being under eighteen years of age, is not sexual assault. Even as the rape law is being sought to be expanded now to cover other forms of sexual assault beyond penis penetration, the draft Amendment Bill retains the marital exception. This also explains the tendency to suggest marriage with the rapist as a just resolution to a rape complaint. The reasoning is that by raping an unmarried woman, the rapist has soiled her. She is used and therefore unmarriageable. And so, the rapist can redress matters by offering to marry her, thereby acquiring sexual rights over her, and undoing the harm done to her chastity and moral worth. If the rapist marries his victim, his sexual usage of her no longer counts as rape. .

There have been instances when people on seeing my photographic work have termed me a pro, which I am definitely not. By pro they obviously mean professional level work, which comes from those who have photography as a profession and earn their livelihood from photography. It therefore gives them an opportunity to hone their skills which then gives their images that honed look i.e. the professional look. When people term me as a pro though, I take it not to mean professional but more the Greek "pro", meaning basic or before, as I am simply a basic learner of photography with my photographic evolution at the before and not the after stage. It's probably my sheer enthusiasm which gets my photos to look any good.
I had tried my hand at shooting some cityscapes when I had had the opportunity to visit the city of Dubai and this is one of the views that I managed to capture, the moon shining over the vibrant artificially lit city, the contrast was reason enough for me to attempt to capture this frame. There might be many flaws in the image but kindly ignore those and instead try to feel what I must have felt taking in the view, I leave that to your imagination.

We have been seeing the Northern Harrier pretty consistently with each visit here, and we believe that this is one of a mated pair that usually surveys areas not far from the dirt drive. Luckily, in this instance, we were sitting in the vehicle observing the migratory Snow Geese in masses when my wife suddenly directed my attention straight ahead as this raptor flew low and almost directly toward the vehicle. Not wanting to alarm it, we remained in the car in hopes of it flying off to the side a bit, so that we could have a chance at photographing this beauty from the car with the window lowered. The drive is elevated a decent amount above the surrounding wetlands, so if all worked well, and the Northern Harrier did not alter its altitude, we might get lucky. All of this was happening within a matter of a few seconds, so holding my breath, and while securing a stable position by the window, I planted my eye against the view finder and was fortunate in getting it in sight as it neared the area by the car. Locking in on the subject, I clicked away. Well, upon downloading the card at home, the photo turned out to be better than I expected.
The Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Galloway Township, but commonly known as Brigantine, New Jersey, was originally established in 1939 with the Brigantine name, and again in 1967 as a combination with the Barnegat Division, in order to protect the natural wetlands for the regular wildlife inhabitants and the migratory birds that follow the Atlantic Flyway as they travel north and south throughout the year. Later in 1984, the two joined under the name of the current Edwin B Forsythe in honoring the late NJ Congressman and Conservationist.
The overwhelming majority of the area is wetlands and the within that, most of it is of a salt marsh nature. The roughly 47,000 acres of protective landscape is quite vast—wonderfully seen from the observation towers—and a well maintained 8-mile main drive, with several shorter extensions and songbird trails for hikers are available for more exploration. There are a number of raised platform nesting sites away from the drive for some of the raptors (eagles, ospreys, falcons, etc.) and a few observation towers along the driving route. These do offer better wide range vantage points; however, given the way the vegetative growth by the roadside is nicely trimmed back within reason, much of the wildlife can be appreciated right from the vehicles. And speaking of wildlife, there is a wealth of fascinating birds and other critters to admire.
One does not need to be a birder to enjoy the visit, for the overall landscape is so very beautiful and peaceful. The famous Atlantic City with its numerous casino resorts and attractive skyline sits mostly to the south and east, depending on where you are at the time, and, of course, just beyond that is the great Atlantic Ocean. When capturing AC under the right lighting conditions, namely “Magic Hour” toward the end of the day, the backdrop scenery can be captivating. To the north and west, the scenery is almost exclusively of the wetlands, with some small wooded areas of Southern New Jersey’s Pineland region.
We were here at the end of 2014 and the start of 2015, after deciding to rediscover it since our first and only trip in early spring of 2012. It was a great decision . . . This series is the first outing down to the NWR in 2015.

Usually in 31-day months I drop a photo to make a 30-image collage. In this instance, on four days I included two photos, mostly because the extra creature photos gave more life to what was a very snowy month--and because the frozen waterfall was special but I could hardly leave out the live-spider-on-snow photo I took the same day.
First and last photos in this montage made it to Explore.
Links to individual photos follow. Photos that were not posted to the 365 group are labeled "bonus."
1. accipiter from rear (Explored), 2. red-bellied woodpecker, 3. gull flying over other gulls, 4. red-shouldered hawk on winter tree, 5. A cornice (from the Italian cornice meaning "ledge") is generally any horizontal decorative molding that crowns a building or furniture element— the cornice over a door or window, for instance, or the cornice around the top edge of a pedestal or along the top of an interior wall

I am never happy about trees being cut down but in this instance I do not know the full story and may never do so.
Having read the news about the petition I decided to visit Fairview to see what the fuss was about and also it was a good excuse to visit the area.
According to one local that I spoke to the City Council is planning to remove about fifty trees in order to make way for a new cycle path but a second lady explained that as the trees will be replaced by the Corpo [Dublin City Council] she was not interested in the petition.
As the planting began in 1906 some of the trees are over a hundred years old and according to the City Council officials some of the older trees are distressed because of restricted growing space and need to be felled regardless of their plans for a cycleway.
On the main Fairview road there is a large number of trees marked with yellow bands and I assume that these are the trees destined for the chop. However, according to some online accounts it is the trees along the park’s main footpath that are under threat. I think that some reports have used stock photographs of random trees in the park.
By the way the Irish Times are not in favour of the petition see: www.irishtimes.com/opinion/fairview-trees-row-shows-why-d...

So ... out of desperation we turn our attention to indoor diversions. For instance, the latest issue of "Southern Family" magazine. One of those periodicals that's so bad, it's actually good in an oddball way. And, it's FREE!
It's slick, and the color printing is gorgeous. Well, sort of. And then there's the prose. For instance, the opening lines of the lead article, here transcribed verbatim:
"Nestled among gently rolling hills, where stately trees gracefully shade the landscaped vista's as far as the eye can see, is one of the best kept secrets in Alabama -- the magnificent Canebrake Club.
"Canebrake Club is a serene enclave where you can leave your busy schedule at the gate and relax as you drive down the winding streets, catching a glimpse of the emerald green 240-acre golf course as you make your way home."
Again, that's verbatim, right down to the apostrophe in "vista's".
Somehow, I'm reminded of the late great literary master from South Carolina, J. Gordon Coogler, and his oft-quoted couplet:
"Alas! for the South, her books have grown fewer—
She never was much given to literature."
In France, the Tribunal d'instance (literally "Court of First Instance"), is a judicial inferior court of record of first instance for general civil suits and includes a criminal division, the Police Court (tribunal de police), which hears cases of misdemeanors or summary offences (contraventions). Having original jurisdiction, the Court's rulings may be appealed to a French appellate court or Supreme Court. The court was formally known as a Justice of the Peace Court (justice de paix) until the judicial restructuring of 1958.
I brought some elements from both the Nazareth and Canandaigua installations into a small wall piece for the Faculty/Staff exhibition during the New York State Summer School of the Arts at SUNY Fredonia. While Tom Galambos wasn't present I did try to live up to the spirit of prior instances by playing a bit off of Yayoi Asoma's painting which conveniently is broken into panel like spaces.
An instance when lens flare was my friend. Of course when I noticed it I moved to eliminate it and didn't really see the full effect until I downloaded the photo.
On January 22 I joined the second session of the PERFECT PLANT PHOTOS! class at TBG taught by Tom Freeland. The assignment of the day was to use shutter priotity, which I translated to hand held long (1/3 to 1/2 sec) exposure with flash to create crisp highlights over a soft image. And I cheated a few times and used aperature priority.

Amidst the excitement of the 2014 World Cup, The Field Museum recognizes the importance of sports in bringing communities together. Skateboarding, for instance, is very popular among Native American youth. Introduced over forty years ago, the sport enjoys increasing popularity both in the city and on the reservation. More than a physical activity, skateboarding culture provides both an engaging community and an outlet for artistic expression.
This subculture, deeply rooted in music and the visual arts, encourages an alternate mode of expression in opposition to the common issues facing youths, such as addiction. Events such as the All Nations Skate Jam bring Native skaters together from around the country in the spirit of competition and community. In the wake of this popularity, experienced Native skaters have developed various companies, like Native Skates, providing support for Native American youths in the skateboarding community. These companies fuse together elements of Native and skate culture, often featuring Native imagery in custom board designs.
Several custom skateboard designs are currently on display at The Field Museum in the temporary exhibition, "Bunky Echo-Hawk: Modern Warrior."

The domestic cat[1][2] (Felis catus[2] or Felis silvestris catus[4]) is a small, usually furry, domesticated, and carnivorous mammal. It is often called the housecat when kept as an indoor pet,[6] or simply the cat when there is no need to distinguish it from other felids and felines. Cats are often valued by humans for companionship and their ability to hunt vermin and household pests.
Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. Cat senses fit a crepuscular and predatory ecological niche. Cats can hear sounds too faint or too high in frequency for human ears, such as those made by mice and other small animals. They can see in near darkness. Like most other mammals, cats have poorer color vision and a better sense of smell than humans.
Despite being solitary hunters, cats are a social species, and cat communication includes the use of a variety of vocalizations (mewing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling and grunting) as well as cat pheromones and types of cat-specific body language.[7]
Cats have a rapid breeding rate. Under controlled breeding, they can be bred and shown as registered pedigree pets, a hobby known as cat fancy. Failure to control the breeding of pet cats by neutering, and the abandonment of former household pets, has resulted in large numbers of feral cats worldwide, requiring population control.[8]
Since cats were cult animals in ancient Egypt, they were commonly believed to have been domesticated there,[9] but there may have been instances of domestication as early as the Neolithic from around 9500 years ago (7500 BC).[10]
A genetic study in 2007 concluded that domestic cats are descended from African wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica) c. 8000 BC, in the Near East.[9][11] According to Scientific American, cats are the most popular pet in the world, and are now found in almost every place where humans live
In another instance of being alone in an amazing location, we made our way down a "F road" (for 4x4's only), by now really utilizing the 2013 Nissan Micra's excellent offroad capabilities and came again to an incredible glacial-carved canyon with no one around but a few curious sheep.

For the instance when I said
" Hey She is a girl...!"
For the feeling when I felt
" With my wish I can make her twirl..!"
Forgive me....!
For the thought which is always in my mind
" She is my property...!"
For the lesson that I was taught
" You can crush her anytime..!"
even before I crossed puberty,
Forgive me....!
For the judgement when I say
" Its late midnight..!You are degraded..!"
For the scanning that I do
" Pretending you are naked...!"
Forgive me....!
For the time when I show
" You are a girl, you're weak..!"
For the time when I see you wet
" When you are wet..I can take a peek..!
Forgive me....!
Forgive me I am heinous
Forgive me I can escape
Forgive me I am shameless
Forgive me I can rape...!!
Forgive me....!
Another instance of having too much fun with the scavenger hunt and not being able to stop. We decided to make a bet with our friend, dressed as Harley Quinn. The bet was to have your photo taken with 10 different jokers by the end of the night.
Take this one for instance...
Some cross a railway track
Some quench their thirst
A family finishes its breakfast
Some complete their 10 rounds of the platform as their morning exercise
All this while, one of them was waiting for a train to arrive!
Taken from the overbridge at the Pipariya Railway station in Madhya Pradesh, a few hours away from Jabalpur. Pipariya is the station where you need to get down to reach PachMadi, one of the popular local tourist and religious destinations in Madhya Pradesh, the heart of India!

Here's another instance of the beauty of desaturation rather than true black and white conversion. Not only does desaturation preserve a subtle touch of color in the lips, but the skin and mask, rather than being limited to true black and gray, have highlights of red and blue, respectively, giving them a richer color than they would have otherwise. The smooth span of skin framed between the textures of the mask and features really works for me. I love the full color version of this image, too, but the black and white, in my opinion, is even more elegant.

Really really loved them wink wink. For instance, I got on my hands and knees and sniffed their dust and gave them a kiss.
