Refugiados ("Refugees") is a monument and instance of public art in Madrid, Spain. Located at a water pond of the Paseo de Recoletos, it is dedicated to migrants and refugees.

History and description

The idea for the erection of a monument to immigrants and refugees was passed by the government board presided by Manuela Carmena in 2018. According to municipal government spokesperson Rita Maestre, it was a way to convey the recognition that refugees and immigrants "have built the city of Madrid".

Designed by Brazilian artist Bel Borba, the project was an adaptation of the author's work Homage to Migrants (presented to the Biennale de Montreux exposition at Lake Geneva), repurposed to fit a location at one of the water ponds of the Paseo de Recoletos, featuring a 180 x 100 x 180 cm concrete block with veins of granite, over which the bronze ensemble would stand. The 960 kg bronze sculptural ensemble consists of 16 seated figures, male and female alike—some of them carrying babies—wearing life vests while waiting for assistance.

The works on the installment of the monument started on 13 May 2019.

I am never happy about trees being cut down but in this instance I do not know the full story and may never do so.

Having read the news about the petition I decided to visit Fairview to see what the fuss was about and also it was a good excuse to visit the area.

According to one local that I spoke to the City Council is planning to remove about fifty trees in order to make way for a new cycle path but a second lady explained that as the trees will be replaced by the Corpo [Dublin City Council] she was not interested in the petition.

As the planting began in 1906 some of the trees are over a hundred years old and according to the City Council officials some of the older trees are distressed because of restricted growing space and need to be felled regardless of their plans for a cycleway.

On the main Fairview road there is a large number of trees marked with yellow bands and I assume that these are the trees destined for the chop. However, according to some online accounts it is the trees along the park’s main footpath that are under threat. I think that some reports have used stock photographs of random trees in the park.

By the way the Irish Times are not in favour of the petition see: www.irishtimes.com/opinion/fairview-trees-row-shows-why-d...

a recent instance of CPI(M)'s willingness to use rape as a weapon against a people's struggle. Later, CPI(M).

systematically spread the theories that she had in fact been killed by her lover, her father or her brother. At.

the time, the West Bengal CM fromCPI(M) ordered a CBI enquiry, promising that it would punish the guilty.

if indeed anyone was found guilty. But now the CBI enquiry has accused CPI(M)'s own local leaders of.

having masterminded the rape. Yet CPI(M) continues to defend the rapists and deny the rape itself..

In Nandigram also, CPI(M) cadres and police indulged in brutal sexual violence on women..

.

CPI(M)'s top most leadership - such as its CC member Benoy Konar, resorted to obscene threats against.

women activists who were speaking out against the land grab at Singur and Nandigram. Konar threatened.

"When Medha Patkar visits here next time, we'll ask our women cadres to show her their backsides.".

When Medha Patkar went to Nandigram, not women, but CPI(M) men did in fact pull down their pants and.

After the infamous Birati rape case in 1991, Shyamali Gupta, the General Secretary of the CPI(M)'s West.

Bengal women's wing, said about the 3 Bangladeshi refugee victims: "Many women of that area, including.

Shanti Das (a victim), the mistress of a notorious anti-social, were involved in foul professions and such.

honeymoons of these women with the anti-socials were an open secret, that day's events appeared to.

be a sequel to the rivalry between these anti-socials", and this statement was published in full by the.

CPI(M)'s party organ, People's Democracy! (cited in Tanika Sarkar, `Reflections on Birati Rape Case', Gender Ideology.

in Bengal, EPW, Feb 21, 1991.).

.

CPI(M)'s former Kerala CM from CPI(M), the late EK Nayanar, asked about the rash of rape cases in the.

state, had replied: `In the US, rape is as common as drinking tea or coffee; rape is as old as time and.

will continue as long as there are women.' (The Hindu, April 30, 2004).

.

After the Kozhikode sex scandal in Kerala, Nayanar again said, "wherever there are women, there will.

be a sex racket. Sex rackets occur naturally." (Outlook, 22 Dec, 1997).

.

The Left-oriented women's movement has a well-deserved reputation for commitment to women's struggles. In.

order to retain and consolidate this legitimacy and combat the fascist and patriarchal forces, the Left groups need to.

prove that they are willing to acknowledge and consciously combat patriarchal `common sense' within their own ranks..

When a CPI(M) Government refuses to dismiss a police officer who openly denies women's rights and expresses.

communal views, when Left leaders defend `dress codes' in the name feminine `decency', or imply that a woman's.

sexual behaviour can justify rape, do they not do grievous harm to women's struggles against such patriarchal.

ideology? Do they not end up giving a boost to the fascist Right-wing, that quotes the CPI(M)'s anti-woman.

statements to defend itself?.

.

When SFI and CPI(M) display double standards by refusing to condemn the anti-woman words and deeds of their.

own comrades on the issue of gender, when they refuse to question the patriarchal stances and distorted gender.

ideology of their own party, they only end up strengthening the patriarchal and anti-woman agenda of the right-wing.

The UP/\ had "brought in ::1 slew of policic5 to further restrict access to affordable and quality eJu1.dliuu: L11e FYUP in .

Delhi University, the Foreign University Bi\\ and the Educational Tribuna\ bi\\ for instance. A.s a result of massive student .

unrest and a sustained campaign by students and teachers in DU, the govt was forced to ro\\ back the FYUP. However, the rest of the policy assaults on the very idea of an inclusive and affordable education are very much on the anvil. The NDA for instance has till now refused to get rid of the elitist CSAT pattern in the UPSC exam, neither is it heeding to the democratic demand of ending the exclusion of classical and 'foreign languages' including Arabic and Persian, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Russian etc as dptionals in the UPSC exam. The lyngdoh committee recommendations -which clearly have been designed not to counter money and muscle power but to weaken the organized student mov~ment enjoys the support of ruling class governments of all hues, whether the UPA or the NDA. .

Violation of democratic rights and aspirations: The state of Telangana was finally formed after a protracted struggle by the students, workers and farmers of the region. The movement for a separate Gorkhaland has also intensified -which was one of the many reasons for CPI{M)'s defeat in the West Bengal polls in 2011. In Kashmir, the ongoing struggle for right to self-determination, and against the regime of rapes, tortures, "disappearances", arrests and fake encounters (which characterise "routine" life) continues. In the north-east too, lrom Sharmila's indefinite hunger strike and the movement against AFSPA continues, including in the CPI(M)-ruled Tripura. Various state governments of all political hues continue to impose draconian legislations like the AFSPA, UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) and the CSPSA (Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act) and to support military campaigns such Operation Green Hunt and vigilante action by private militias to quell people's movements against anti-people and anti-poor policies. .

Recently, the ABVP stopped Sheetal Sathe of the Kabir Kala Manch from delivering a lecture at the St. Xavier's college in Mumbai; the anti-superstition activist Dr. Dabholkar was killed; fascist assaults were launched by ABVP goons in FTII in the name of opposing 'naxalism'; a JNU student and a well-known faculty member of DU are still in jail in Gadchiroli after being branded 'Maoists'; and the ABVP disrupted a seminar against the arrest of the DU teacher in Patna. .

In the north-east, communal and ethnic violence continues -often encouraged by the bogey of illegal 'Bangladeshi immigration' propagated by communal fascist forces. Across the country, the horrific saga of discrimination, racial profiling and deep-set prejudices against the north-east continues even in "normal" times, reflected in numerous instances of sexual violence against women from North-East, in the shocking murder of Nido Tania, Richard Loitam or the suicide of Dana Sangma. .

Communal-Fascist Offensive: As we have noted earlier, communal offensives, aggressive hate mongering and targeting of the minority community under the garb of the so-called 'love jihad' has increased in many parts of the country. With the success of the so-called Muzaffarnagar experiment and the consequent well-orchestrated riots and communal polarisation, plans are afoot to replicate it on a larger scale in entire UP, with the SP government once again taking no steps to nip the communalization in the bud. Even as the UPA shamefully dithered on passing an effective Communal Violence Bill, the NDA not surprisingly is showing every interest in scuttling even a proper discussion on it. Moreover, several police officers accused of serious crimes such as fake encounters of Sohrabuddin, lshrat Jahan are being reinstated by the new regime . Also all efforts are afoot to completely scuttle any proper enquiry to uncover and expose the network of Hindutva brigade charged for the blasts and terror attacks in Nanded, Malegaon, Ajmer, Samjhauta Express and Hyderabad even as communal stereotyping and witch-hunting of innocent Muslim youth in the name of 'fighting terror' continues from Malegaon, Hyderabad, and Azamgarh to Darbhanga in Bihar. .

Caste atrocities also continue unabated. Whether in Bihar, or in Bhagana (Haryana) or in Ramgarh in UP, the saga of rape, murder and collective 'punishment' of dalits simply for demanding their fundamental rights continues. Moreover, refusal to grant reservation for OBCs in higher faculty posts in educational institutions has highlighted yet again the entrenched resistance of our establishment against the provisions of reservation. Moreover, all Ranveer Sena men convicted by the lower courts in Bathani Tola, Laxmanpur Bathe, Miyapur and Nagari Bazaar massacres or those convicted in the Tsundur masscre, have been acquitted by the High Courts, clear instances of feudal casteist massacres only to be followed by massacres of justice! .

We <Jrc witnessing an overall trend of organised assaults on progressive, democratic forces, movementc; and organisations. In West Bengal for instance, the Trinamool regime has brutally clamped down on women, students, farmers, workers and any democratic dissenting voice, indulging in violence and murder of all Left political opponents. Meanwhile, in this overall scenario of organised political vendetta, killing and violence, all those responsible brutal murders -of communist leader T p Chandrasekharan in Kerala, or popular leader of tea -garden workers Gangaram Kol or youth leader Bhaiyyaram Yadav martyred in the struggle for the oppressed for instance-have not yet been brought to book. .

The entrepreneurial spirit has busted all over the UK. In 2017, for instance, the nation saw an approximate of 80 businesses launched every hour. Happy times for most new entrepreneurs. With this economic advancement, it is no surprise that you can now start a business anywhere in the UK. Nonetheless, a startup will naturally have higher odds of thriving in specific locations compared to others. With that fact in mind, where can you find the best combination of creativity, support, and talent that will let your business survive and flourish beyond your wildest imaginations?

1. Oxford:

According to a 2017 survey executed by UK’s domain name registry, Nominet UK, Oxford is Britain’s current hotspot for startups. This comes as no surprise, in light of the fact that startups in the city have access to more than 20,000 of Oxford’s hardworking and smartest individuals.

The reputable Oxford University offers the city a never-ending supply of fresh graduates seeking the next big opportunities, particularly in the science and technology sectors. Better yet, in case you would like to take a short break from launching your business, Oxford boasts excellent standards of living you can avail. Being a historic city, Oxford features a mesmerizing scenery and architecture, as well as sovereign bars and shops. Nonetheless, note that Oxford is by far, not the cheapest city in this blog post, because its housing prices skyrocket way above the United Kingdom Average. Here is a fun fact though; “Survival rates of startup businesses in Oxford from 2010 to 2017 have hit a rather impressive 41%.”

2. Leeds:

After London, Leeds has been regarded to as the number two financial capital in the UK since it generates an estimated 4% of the nation’s total output. According to a 2015 study by the Centre of Entrepreneurs, Leeds had the fourth highest number of startups. Even better, in 2017 (two years down the line), EY named Leeds the best destination for FDI (Foreign Direct Investments) in the North. We can attribute Leed’s astounding success to its close connections with Manchester and the fact that Startups have access to one of the highest population of brilliant minds in the nation. Leeds is home to 3 prominent universities including, The University of Leeds, The University of Law, and Leeds Becket University.

Startups in Leeds have a survival rate of 42%.

3. Cardiff:

With Cardiff Enterprise Zone focusing its attention on Life Sciences, Creative Sector, Cybersecurity, and Fintech, City of Arcades works hard to lure startup businesses with its government incentives such business rates relief schemes. According to Mr. Chris Sutton, Chairman of the Central Cardiff Enterprise Zone, startups in the city will avail different forms of perks, such as close supports and local research into legal tech and Fintech.

4. Cambridge:

Just like Oxford, Cambridge has been making grounds in the digital and technology sectors, thanks to its readily available workforce streaming-in from the gates of Cambridge University Year after Year. The incentives do not stop there. Cambridge University came up with a program aimed at equipping local business owners with the best business tips from world-class academics. While Cambridge is a small city, its business-friendly attributes say otherwise. No wonder it’s the City of perspiring dreams.

5. Bournemouth:

According to a recent report from Tech Nation, Bournemouth is currently experiencing the highest growth proportion of “Tech-related businesses” compared to any other location in the nation. The City’s tech industry is now worth £352 million, and it employs more than 15,000 individuals.

The fact Bournemouth is not too stuffy and is filled with creative minds makes it an ideal Location for startups. Even better the city features countless places to relax, in case you need to take a break from your routine activities.

Conclusion:

Location significantly impacts the success rate of a startup business. That said, entrepreneurs need to ensure that they are placing themselves in environments with business-friendly regulations and where customers can easily find them.

This card is an instance of racist stereotyping; the black boy plans to steal the chicken. For me, about such practices, Mark Twain in _Pudd;nhead WIlson_ has the last word: "On frosty nights the humane Negro prowler would warm the end of the plank and put it up under the cold claws of chickens roosting in a tree; a drowsy hen would step on to the comfortable board, softly clucking her gratitude, and the prowler would dump her into his bag, and later into his stomach, perfectly sure that in taking this trifle from the man who daily robbed him of an inestimable treasure—his liberty—he was not committing any sin that God would remember against him in the Last Great Day."

Mr Dobbs loves being involved in family activities, mostly as an observer.

For instance, he never misses the periodic orchid bath.

Apparently orchids tend to be difficult to manage, and keep alive, unless you have a green thumb, like Serena does.

Mr Dobbs has a hard time grasping the concept. He doesn't even completely get the thumb part.

He's been told many times that orchids need water, but don't like sitting in it. So, from time to time, they take a trip to the bathtub.

They get a shower, and when the water has completely drained, go back into the library where they sit enjoying the daylight, and not doing much more.

In the spring they bloom, hold on to their, let's face it, beautiful flowers for a couple of months, and then go back to their barren appearance.

Six years of spa treatments, and counting. Talk about beauty buying you a good living.

In 1892, the colonial government discovered his activities and he was deported to Lepanto in the Mountain Province. Upon his return he joined General Miguel Malvar’s forces. As formidable a warrior as he was a lawyer, by 1898 he commanded his own forces in Batangas.

The original Apacible house was built in the 18th century, renovated in 1870, and again in 1940. The ornamental carvings and the “3″V” motif inscribed into the doors, floors and even the dining room table are the results of the renovation.

The architecture of the sala is a mixture of Filipino design and art deco, and while the size and grandeur is overwhelming, the true beauty is in the details. The picture frames, wall sconces and chandeliers are all works of art. Just outside the sala, on the way to the dining room, is an altar to the Virgin Mary. The hands and head of the image are made of ivory; the floral rococo case is elaborately carved and painted in gold.

The massive dining room table is actually one piece of wood cut vertically from the tree so the grains run in the same direction. On one side of the dining room are cabinets for chinaware imported from England, Italy and China."

def: an instance where something can be familiar, yet foreign at the same time, resulting in a feeling of it being uncomfortably strange.

I went to see a show called Ghost Stories awhile ago. It was an enjoyable romp, not nearly as psychological as I was expecting. However, at the beginning, we were shown photographs with unexpected elements in them - if only you look.

I think that was the scariest part. Tangible evidence of the untangible, or simple misinterpretation?

For instance, the varying textures and colors of milkweed, the outside of the pods, coarse in texture, the insides vary in color from being non-descript to having streaks of glistening tans and browns. Each pod opens at a different rate, some seeds clinging to the pod, others in various stages of bursting forth to float in the winds of oncoming winter. Never are there two alike, each to be enjoyed for what it is."...…………. by Forrest McCain-Jennings

Vienna's Zentral Friedhof is a massive cemetery. It may be the biggest one I've ever been to, though I haven't bothered comparing size. I also have to say I didn't extensively wander the grounds here like I have in others (like Recoleta in Buenos Aires, for instance). The majority of what I saw here...it's a crowded cemetery, for certain -- Austria has about 50, I believe, and this must be the most populated one.

Zentral Friedhof doesn't have the above-ground vaults that are common in Latin America, nor ostentatious headstones, by and large...with the exception of what I'm presenting here, which is mainly the "honored folks" section, filled with classical composers.

This is the classical music version of New York's Woodlawn Cemetery and its Jazz Corner, though this is even more concentrated than that.

Within a thirty second walk from the Mozart statue -- he's actually buried in a different cemetery (St. Marx) in town, in a grave that they aren't 100% sure is of him due to the burial practices of the late 18th century.

However, they felt that, with his ties to Vienna, he absolutely should be included in this plot of land. (If they knew his grave with certainty, I'm positive he'd be disinterred and put here...which is what they did with Beethoven, whose bones are buried directly behind the Mozart statue.)

If you've seen Immortal Beloved, this headstone will be familiar to you; it was the closing scene for the Beethoven biopic. I had fun making a few videos with music yesterday, so you get Fur Elise with your Beethoven here.

Besides Beethoven, you'll find Franz Schubert (famous for his popular music/lieders), who died mighty young, probably from mercury poisoning, it seems. He was 31 when he died. His most famous (or my favorite, at least) piece is Ave Maria. (The one that you hear around this time of year all the time: Ave Maria, grazia plena...) A fun note on Ave Maria? I heard it, more than once, at some major train stations in China which, given their government's/nation's not being religious...I found fascinating, yet loved at the same time.

Also nearby is the entire Strauss clan (that are related to each other, anyway, which excludes Richard Strauss).

The progenitor of the Viennese musical Strausses is Johann Senior, most famous for the Radetzky March (which will probably be familiar to you if you search it on YouTube).

His son, Johann II, is most famous for the Blue Danube Waltz (video accompanies here). If you've been exposed to classical music and aren't familiar with this piece...well, you're probably from another planet. It's been in countless movies.

Lastly for the famous composers in this specific patch of land would be Johannes Brahms. He wrote a rather famous lullaby, which I put in a video here for you. Again, if you're not familiar with it, chances are, you're an extraterrestrial.

Also included in this photographic set are other headstones (near the composers). There is another famous composer buried in the cemetery here -- Antonio Salieri (the antagonist in the movie Amadeus, though the relationship as described in the movie is...well...not exactly accurate). He, though, wasn't buried anywhere near these other giants. I'm not quite sure why.

At any rate, a little bit of an Austrian cemetery with a few famous folks' bones for you to ponder. If you visit Vienna and are on a pilgrimage for famous folks, this is a fine place to come. For a central cemetery, though, it's not exactly central. It's a bit of a trek from downtown Vienna...

Post mainly details the men's collection and new styles, but adds mention of the women's socks as well. Talks about the direction of this collection with the new dress socks, as well as his preference for the cotton/spandex blend. Notes Live Stock and Boardroom as Vancouver retailers.
