An installation by artist Vennila nr Kain
To mark the third anniversary of the official declaration of the War on Iraq, artist Vennila nr Kain sets up her prayer flags (for peace) in Times Square.
The installation is a delicate network of crisscrossed prayer flags similar to the Tibetan prayers flags strung over sacred spaces. The wind carries up the prayers from the flags to the realm of gods, or as blessings over land.
In this case, the artist uses weathered images of fallen soldiers as her prayer flags so that their lives (and death) may bring about the possibility of peace over land. Spread amidst the prayer flags of images of dead soldiers are four numerals corresponding to the current American death toll in Iraq.
The floor is littered with shredded pure white paper symbolizing the silent and unknown numbers of Iraqi men, women & children and other incidental human cost of war such as contractors and security guards, many of whom are hired from third world nations of this world.
The entire process of the installation, from conception to preparation to execution is done very much with the lineage of prayer flags and the war dead in mind, and hence in a prayerful, pacifist, mindful, meditative manner while softly chanting for healing and peace.
This window installation is part of the ongoing series of ‘being peace’ art created by the artist Vennila nr Kain. The series began with the living art installation "Send A Salami To Your Boy In The Army" incorporating aspects of ritual fasting, mourning & meditation for two weeks in January 2004.
Vennila nr Kain is an actor, poet, yogini, performance artist, humbly committed to the Gandhian philosophy of being the change she wants to see in the world. She may be found at www.vennila.net

and a Touch of Grey/Grateful Dead to go along:
Must be getting early
Clocks are running late
Faint light of the morning sky looks so phony
Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains, I don't care, cuz
It's alright
I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive
I see you've got your fist out
Say your piece and get out
Yes I get the gist of it, but
It's alright
Sorry that you feel that way
The only there is to say:
Every silver lining's got a touch of grey
I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive
It's a lesson to me
The eagles and the beggars and the seas
The ABC's we all must face
Try to keep a little grace
It's a lesson to me
The deltas and the east and the freeze
The ABC's we all think of
And try to win a little love
I know the rent is in arrears
The dog has not been fed in years
It's even worse than it appears, but
It's alright
Cows giving kerosene
Kid can't read at seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene, but
It's alright
I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive
The shoe is on the hand that fits.
There's really nothing much to it
Whistle through your teeth and spit, cuz
It's alright
Oh well, a touch of grey
Kinda suits you anyway
And that was all I had to say, and
It's alright
I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive
We will get by
We will get by
We will get by
We will survive
We will get by
We will get by
We will get by
We will survive
2013 Recapitulations - Video Presentation of Paintings & Installations
In 2013, I continued to explore the intricacy of patterns, and stylized presentations which were neither naturalism nor pure abstraction, as means to express distilled concepts and emotion; at the mean time, I did make a couple paintings which were purely abstract work and figurative painting. I also continued to develop works on the theme of a reoccurring motif - white dresses, which to me, were both highly individual and impersonal, simultaneously free and constrained. Finally, a variation of the white dresses - a painting of a black dress, was added to the growing series at the end of the year.
Following my own tradition, I compiled my paintings and major installations completed in 2013 into a video presentation.

horrible quality and editing, just to get the general feel of the installation. As a final A level project we were given a choice several themes to address, I chose identity and subsequently religion as a facet of identity. Created under exam conditions in the allocated 15 hours with several subtle references the Jonestown Massacre, my project examines the profound effect religion has on character. The views and concepts expressed are not in any way a representation of my own personal views, but a bid to create a piece that stretches the boundaries of societal conventions, exploring taboo imagery. My aim with my installation and the entirety of my body of work is to provide a compelling and thought provoking artistic (figurative) excursion, whether it comes in the form of outrageous statements or bold and bloodied presentation.

As installation of the nativity window nears completion coloured light plays upon the adjoining altar wall for the first time.
The impressive 1950s Roman Catholic church of Christ the King in Kingstanding, one of Birmingham's northern suburbs is a church I have got to know well as a result of my latest stained glass project, to design and make two large three-light windows flanking the sanctuary, the first of which was installed in the last 2 days (march 7th / 8th 2011).
The church is a large brick building which originally had a rather spartan, barn-like interior as a result of it's brick finish, but thanks to the initiative of Fr Michael White the interior has been recently transformed and much improved by a more sympathetic plaster finish, which has lightened the interior since 2007. Another more recent developement is the church's new community centre constructed in 2009 which is now joined to the main facade on Warren Farm Road.
The church contains some fine examples of stained glass from the 1950s and 60s, principally the liturgical west window in the facade which features a bold Christ in majesty flanked by angels on a vibrant background. Glass of a similar date and style is situated in three of the side chapels and spaces that flank the main nave with busts of the Virgin & Child, St Theresa of Lisieux and St John. A smaller 1980s panel of St John the Baptist,by Tony Naylor for Norgrove Studios, was recently moved from the 'west' end to the new community hall extension.
The 'east' wall by contrast has no windows, just a flat wall with a wooden Crucifix at it's centre. My new window of the Nativity has just been installed immediately to the right, to be complimented by a Creation themed window on the corresponding position to the left.

The "Radialign" laser alignment device ensures refractory is installed perpendicular to the axis of the kiln. The use of the Radialign prevents errors from being made due to manual measurement from distorted or worn away weld seams.
