"What a privilege to be here on the planet to contribute your unique donation to humankind. Each face in the rainbow of colors that populate our world is precious and special" - Morris Dees
This is very similar to this photo from my last 365 project, and for good reason. The evenings before and after I took that photo I was assisting the students that I work with in a theatrical performance, much like I will be doing tonight.
The students that I work with are incredible, they are diverse and talented in many ways and have had to overcome challenges their entire lives. They aren't the students that get asked to dances or get picked to play on teams during gym although it's something that they desperately want. They are students with Autism, the ones with Downs Syndrome, the ones who typically get labeled as different or weird or many other terrible terms.
But, in this theatre class, they are actors. They are set designers, they are collaborators, they are students. For the past 3 years our school has developed a theatre program designed specifically to showcase inclusion and diversity and to celebrate the talent and accomplishments of ALL our students, regardless of ability levels. In the play tonight the cast is made up of students and adult supports that are putting aside diagnosis or disability and focusing on theatre and the chance to show the community what people can achieve when given the opportunity.
I go into work each day, yes because it's my job, but moreso because I look forward to interacting with these students, helping them learn and accomplish their goals and help them to feel like they belong in the school community. Tonight I'll be standing behind them, watching them step forward into centre stage and I know that I'll be beaming with pride and admiration for what they're doing and what they're achieving.
MFIMC: Emulation #88
This shot took hours to set-up in a studio and was extremely tricky due to the reflective nature of the glass with such strong curves. In the end I had to build a light box to put the glass inside, otherwise I would have ended up worth lots of dotty reflections instead of smoth lines. I was quite happy with the end result.
Inside the amazing 100-year-old Memorial Chapel at Lakewood Cemetery Minneapolis Minnesota
More than you probably want to know:
The Memorial Chapel at Lakewood was designed in 1909 by Minneapolis architect Harry Wild Jones to look like the famous Hagia Sophia basilica in Turkey. The interior was created by New York designer Charles Lamb who went to Rome and came back to Minnesota with 6 mosaic artists and over 10 million little bits of mosaic tiles made from colored stones, glass and marble. Those madly skilled Italians spent the next year creating what is considered the most perfect example of Byzantine mosaic art in North America. (Byzantine refers to the Eastern Roman Empire - they used a lot of mosaic art in their buildings back then - I had to look that one up).
The Chapel was completed in 1910 and everything you see on the walls and ceiling is little pieces of tile about the size of a nickel. What's also cool is the stained-glass windows that ring the 65 foot tall center dome act like a ginormous sundial marking the time of day and season (if you know how to read it).
The Chapel sits in the middle of the Lakewood cemetery close to Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis and is used for funerals and other special events. Help yourself to a complimentary self-guided tour brochure at: www.lakewoodcemetery.com/files/chapel.pdf
ok, he was telling a story earlier that day of a drunken night when he was sitting next to a desk lamp and it fell over and hit him in the head. in a lethargic attempt to remove the annoyance from his personal space he pushed the lamp out of the way but his motor skills prevented a successful obliteration of the nuisance and so it continued to fall upon his head as he became angrier and angrier with the lamp until it appeared to those around him as if he was fighting with it, much to their amusement. we were at a party and i needed a portrait of colin for his upcoming part in the magazine i work for and so i came up with the idea of recreating the fight in a much more dramatic and staged atmosphere. i spent nearly three hours building the boxing ring with fold out chairs, christmas lights, and red ribbon in the garage of the house where the party was at. as i constantly repeated digi tests to get the spotlight effect just the way i wanted it, the party inside the house brought everyone into the perfect state of mind to where they would be good extras outside the ring. we found a costume and rattled as many frames as i could before i lost the enthusiasm of everyone involved who wanted to get back to the party.
Boa noite, amigas!

Shot in Chartres - Eure & Loir - France -
In northern Europe it is common for the iconography on the north side of a church to focus on Old Testament themes, with stories from the lives of the saints and the Gospels being more prominent on the physically (and hence, spiritually) brighter southern side. Chartres is no exception to this general principle and the north transept portals, with their deep sheltering porches, concentrate on the precursors of Christ, leading up to the moment of His incarnation, with a particular emphasis on the Virgin Mary.[34] The overall iconographical themes are clearly laid-out; the glorification of Mary in the centre, the incarnation of her son on the left and Old Testament prefigurations and prophecies on the right. One major exception to this scheme is the presence of large statues of St Modesta (a local martyr) and St Potentian on the north west corner of the porch, close to a small doorway where pilgrims visiting the crypt (where their relics were stored) would once have emerged blinking into the light.
As well as the main sculptural areas around the portals themselves, the deep porches are filled with myriad other carvings depicting a range of subjects including local saints, Old Testament narratives, naturalistic foliage, fantastical beasts, Labours of the Months and personifications of the 'active and contemplative lives' (the vita activa and vita contemplativa). The personifications of the vita activa (directly overhead, just inside the inside of the left hand porch) are of particular interest for their meticulous depictions of the various stages in the preparation of flax – an important cash-crop in the area during the Middle Ages.
Chartres is universally known for its cathedral listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. For several years "Chartres en Lumières" reveals the cultural and architectural wealth of a city that brightly shines every night from dusk until 1 am.
Comprised of 26 original lighting and video scenographies, this patrimonial path of light will be presented from April 11 till October 10, 2015.
"Lights of Chartres" has become one of the major events in the city, through its spectacular 183 consecutive evenings of light shows... Entirely free !

A sea cave near Ruby Beach, Olympic Peninsula, Washington.
Because, after a day of shooting n the windy beach, my lens was dirty I had to really repair the sun star. I may have made it too perfect. This was a very hard shot to get because I was shooting from the darkness into the direct sunlight. I almost deleted this one but really liked the light on the wall of the cave. This is a good example of processing like mad to salvage a shot.

View on black please!
I do love a good interior and church interiors are some of the best; they're just so full of detail! As much as I hate religion, they certainly know to produce great buildings! Saying that, you can also get some great interior shots in museums too!
This is St. Stephen's Basilica or Szent István-bazilika in Hungarian. It's one of the tallest buildings in Budapest (alongside the wonderful parliament building) and possibly the most ornate. You're allowed to take photos inside, although there isn't many good places to mount a GorillaPod. If you push past loads of people, you can happily attach your tripod to the top of the collection box. Not that I did this of course...
I wasn't going to put this photo up today, but it's Emyli's birthday today and she likes these type of shots, so this is dedicated to her. Happy birthday!
This is a detailed shot, so it looks much better large, on black. (Press L)
Edit: I've just realised that you can have testimonials on Flickr! I have none :(
No group graphics or large images in comments please.

my first finish of 2011. that i started in feb 2010. hooray for a new pillowcase for the bed!! this is my special pillowcase now. not to be shared :) the front is densely quilted over the hexies, and then the rest is plain white with quilting lines about an inch apart.
this batting was "pre-used". when i deconstructed my FFA 1 quilt this was the batting inside. i was a little worried it wouldn't crinkle since the batting had already been washed, but luckily the kona snow was unwashed and aided the crinkle :)
now i guess i should re-quilt my FFA 1 quilt...but now i need batting for it!!
This cake is for my 1 year old niece. I was asked all week what this weeks cake was going to be- with my response being- "It's a cake, a cake of a cake...". I got lots of blank stares and puzzled looks.
The candle and the 1 are gumpaste. The top cake is being used as the babies' smash cake...Unlike the decorated chocolate facade, the inside cake is white with buttercream, 10 inch round.
