The worms were bad enough, but this little guy ate half a leaf while I photographed him. Guess tomatoes are out for now. I flicked him off. He landed on a stem of grass and continued eating as if nothing had happened. Hmmm
As spring arrives and the bugs begin to stir, another fellow rears his head for the macro-photographer.

Not the first European Wool Carder bee I've seen this year, but the first one I've been able to photograph. Cool weather and partly cloudy skies create a stop and go environment for most solitary bees. This one was semi-active so I was able to get a shot without its mandibles clamped onto a stem.
Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (around 4.5x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, +1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Since I first started enjoying closeup nature photography around two months ago these flies have been at the top of my list to snap as they are such natural posers and always find it easy to look their best.

Resting on the house under the front porch light. Captured and taken downstairs to the "studio" for a few photos and then released.
or death. Depending on how you look at it.
I actually felt a little sorry for the fly. But I do believe it was already dead before this insect (what IS that?) decided to make a meal out of it.
This could have been a cleaner shot, but I always shoot hand-held, because I'm not fond of using a tripod. Trying to force myself to get used to one, but it takes so much time to set up, and by the time I do, whatever I'm focused on (bugs, birds, etc.) have moved along their merry little way. I'm still learning.
Burying Beetle - Nicrophorus carolinus (from Doug... thanks). it was pretty large... and crawling around on the counter top!
