the closest I've come to showing the compound eyes in a flight shot of any kind, check how thin the depth of field is and remember there's no flash

I am making it mission to catch fast moving insects in flight. And yes it does make you nutty lol.

Cicada (Cicadidae) exoskeleton clinging to lichen on a silver maple tree (Acer saccharinum - Sapindaceae) in this the "year of the cicada."

Some cicadas emerge every year, some only every 2 or so decades. This year has been the big year for the extra-large brood in parts of North America.

I was able to get fairly close to this Red Admiral as it rested on the bricks of our house.

 

I used the selective color technique in my editing and was happy with the result.
