I discovered that it was much easier for me to just use my hands (sort of like clay). I wasn't going for a machine-smooth look, and using my hands I could layer the mixture to create a weathered texture.

Working on a fairly large canvas.

My first sock in a long time -- got this far in a weekend which was exciting to me!
