No wonder legends in olden times connected Staffa to Giant's Causeway in Ireland

Coeffin Castle is believed to be built on the site of a Viking fortress. The name Coeffin is thought to come from Caifen who was a Danish prince,[1] and whose sister supposedly haunted the castle until her remains were taken back to be buried beside her lover in Norway.

Coeffin Castle was built in the 13th century, probably by the MacDougalls of Lorn. Lismore was an important site within their lordship, being the location of St. Moluag's Cathedral, seat of the Bishop of Argyll. The first written evidence of the castle occurs in 1469–70, when it was granted to Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy by Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll. It is unlikely to have been occupied in post-mediaeval times.[2]

A tidal fish trap, of unknown age, is located in the small bay to the south-east of the castle.[3] To the north-east of the castle are the remains of a stone-walled fort.[4] The Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland, published in 1892, lists a Castle Rachal in the same general location as Castle Coeffin. It is described as "a very ancient Scandinavian fortalice in Lismore and Appin parish, Argyllshire, on the NW side of Lismore island, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the north-eastern extremity, now a dilapidated ivy-clad ruin."[5]

View across Elgol beach towards the Black Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye, with the heather in full bloom on the slopes of the adjacent hillside.

A squall dumps a load of rain on the little island of Easdale. The cluster of little white houses sit around the slate quarries on the tiny island. It may look wild and grey, but explore its little coast, and examine the community and you discover an idyllic life is possible here: a real escape from the rat race

Processed to monochrome from full colour raw original using Capture One Pro 21. Elgol beach on the Isle of Skye is pretty much a photographer's dream location, with spectacular views in most directions, opted for ultra-wideangle, low viewpoint perspective for this one to use the foreground rocks, pebbles and textures to pull the eye into the picture.

Luib (Scottish Gaelic: Lùib) is a crofting and fishing settlement on the south east shore of the sea loch, Loch Ainort near Broadford, on the island of Skye in Scotland. It is in the council area of Highland. The settlement of Dunan is 1 mile directly east of Luib, along the A87 coast road.

Eilean Donan (Eilean Donnain) is a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet, Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh, in the western Highlands of Scotland. A picturesque castle that frequently appears in photographs, film and television dominates the island, which lies about 1 kilometre from the village of Dornie. Since the castle's restoration in the early 20th century, a footbridge has connected the island to the mainland.

Apologies if you were one of the 55 people that saw this once today, uploaded for the second time today due to Flickr being broken. (55 views in nearly 4 hours)..?

This is the second image I've posted up from this location on the Isle of Skye and I'd say this is probably my favourite.

The weather was changing minute to minute and even swapping composition spots could see a complete change in lighting and weather by the time you walked for 2 minutes, light was breaking through at times though so I just decided to pick a spot I really liked and just wait to see what happened.. here amdist the stormy skies low light is breaking through from the left picking out details on the house and hillside to the rear, snow covered Blaven is seen amidst the ongoing passing weather squalls.

Abandoned Fishing Boats, Salen Bay, Isle of Mull, Scotland. Faced with another dull, shadowless day, I opted to use a 10 stop, Neutral Density Filter and a 30 second exposure to attempt to add some life and movement, into the image, without detracting from the Fishing Boats. Not sure how well this works as it's not my main photography genre.

You just can't walk past the famous Quiraing tree without taking a shot..

I was fortunate to be able to join some friends for a winter getaway on the Isle of Skye. We had arrived the evening before in the dark, so this was our first location of our first day on Skye. A view from the shore of Loch Cill Chriosd looking across to Blà Bheinn in the distance.

In addition to spending the Skye holiday with MuddyBoots., Mark, Geoff, Andy and Pete I finally got the opportunity to meet up with SkyeWeasel, who joined our merry band of togs and shared some local insights.

The remaining leaves have fallen as Autumn turns quickly this year into Winter and leaves the colour behind for the darker months to come.

A description that is appropriate for the image and, if I'm not careful, myself. A fabulous afternoon and evening exploring the photo opportunities along the coastline of Skye at Elgol. Maneuvering across the wet and occasionally mossy rocks to this location required balance, lightening reflexes and grace. The last time I had lightening reflexes was years ago and grace has never been a term used by others to describe how I move, the only possible reason I didn't end up on my backside is luck.

Besides dealing with the rocks underfoot, there was also the advancing tide to deal with. After setting up and taking a few images I soon discovered the waves washing over my boots . . . . time to grab the kit and retreat and reposition . . . shoot and repeat. All in all a memorable time at Elgol . . . I got the images I wanted, I stayed upright and the only things that ended up in the water were my boots.

In the distance are the snow capped Cuillins. The lone figure enjoying the view provides a sense of scale to the scene.

I was fortunate to have been able to join some friends for a winter getaway on the Isle of Skye. This was the last location we visited . . . what a way to end the holiday!

The distillery is relatively small for Scotland and operates only Monday to Friday. They produce two distinct brands:

Tobermory is the non-peated more sweet and spicy version.

Ledaig is the peated version.

Fleeting light - The iconic view to the Black Cuillin across Loch Scavaig from Elgol, with the fleeting light just catching the base of the rocks of the honeycomb cliff.

Fleeting it was, lasting barely a handful of seconds; moments before it was absolutely lashing it down having been caught out by the heavy squall whilst hobbling my way across the boulders on the beach. I had sheltered beneath the cliff to let the squall pass when this momentary unexpected splash of light appeared as if from nowhere, bathing the rocks and cliff in bright warmth. With my gear safely stowed away in the dry beneath the cliff and with absolutely no time to set up, I grabbed a handful of impromptu shots finding myself unprepared in an unplanned location on the beach.

Fortunate that I did so; this was the only show of light that evening, from this point on, the gloom set in, with the Cuillin throwing ever more weather across Loch Scavaig.

Buachaille Etive Mòr (Great Herdsman of Etive), generally known to climbers simply as The Buachaille, is a mountain at the head of Glen Etive in the Highlands of Scotland on route to Glen Coe. Buachaille Etive Mòr takes the form of a ridge nearly five miles (8 km) in length, almost entirely encircled by the River Etive and its tributaries.

We took the bus from Craignure to visit Tobermory, as we had registered for a tour at the local destillery with tasting.

This line of houses seems to be part of an English TV series, which was never shown in Switzerland. So I have no memories of seeing it at TV. But they look really nice in their distinct colours.

Taken from the road leading up to the Quiraing, again on Trotternish. I think that this part of Skye looks like nothing on earth. I imagine the land rising in primordial waves and bearing down on the sea and being suddenly frozen.

Saint Columba is accredited with spreading the Christian faith throughout Scotland. He founded a monastery on the Isle of Iona after he arrived in 563 with 12 companions. He was originally from Gartan, County Donegal, Ireland, where he also established several monasteries. I wandered around the abbey in Iona imagining what it might have been like 1500 years ago.
