"There's no time for waiting

No future to see

Inside the next moment

Nothing might be

The answer's not certain

No time to decide

Is this the last curtain

There's no place to hide..."

(Leon Russell, Elton John, THE UNION)

Inspiration: My recent birthday

Result: Infinity Dragon

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Micron 005 & 02 pens, in a Moleskine plain journal

Location: At home

Note: I have always been associated with dragons. I don't mean that I think I am one or feel an affinity for them, rather that throughout my life people have gifted me with dragon totems and nicknames. Born in the Year of the Dragon helps explain how it started, but not why it has persisted for decades. After a while it just became such a strong part of my identity that I now sport a dragon tattoo.

As a birthday card to myself I decided to draw one, curled in the symbol of infinity, which also happens to be the shape that my family has traditionally baked for birthdays a sweet bread made with saffron, raisins, orange peel and almonds instead of a cake with candles. :)

Inspiration: Barcelona

Result: Day 3

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Sakura Micron 005 & Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils in a Stillman & Birn Zeta series sketchbook

Location: apartment in Barcelona

Note: The following drawings are reflections of my trip to Spain, Dublin and Scotland. It's a combination sketchbook / journal. Not all of the pages contain writing ....those are yet to be filled in because while I did make a point of doing a drawing every day I really didn't have time to also fill in the blanks with words...those are to come. I just needed to get these posted so I could get my daily drawings back on track. :)

....I don't even know what to make of this colour. Scanning it. Photographing it.....nope. Not going to get anywhere near the weirdness in real life. Red? Orange? Touch of neon peach? It breaks with water to paler but even more messed up version of what it scans. I have no idea....aside from the fact that it is not to my tastes.

"...You can't shoot down the moon

Some things never change

We can build a bridge between us

But the empty space remains

Just as long as you're around

We live on borrowed time

I'll put my money where my mouth is

You're guilty at the scene of the crime

I never say more than I need

The mystery runs deep

The dangers buried below

The secrets that you keep"

SHOOT DOWN THE MOON - Elton John, 1985;

What I'm working on today. I'll explain it once I get the drawing finished.

I am making a little book of zentangle-patterns.

Inspiration: What if 007, Q & M were canines...

Result: MI-K9

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Micron 005 & 02 pens, in a Moleskine plain journal

Location: At home

Note: Yeah more Skyfall inspired doodling....*cough*....this time thinking what breeds would Bond, Q and M be if the were dogs.

The answer...at least using my pretzel logic are the following ~ Scottish Deerhound/007 (big, loyal gun dog and...er ...Scottish), Border Collie/Q (always the smartest pup in the class...THE genius of the dog world) and British Bulldog/M (no explanation necessary) ~ but most important....ALL are native to the U.K... in case you were wondering.

Two Arab lads saw me sketching and stopped to chat. One said I was self confident to be able to sketch on a Saturday night in this spot. I told them that lots of people passed me but they were the only ones to stop and ask me about my work. He said it’s natural to stop and chat to someone drawing. They asked if I could draw them and that I should be in no hurry. They said the shoes look better drawn than their faces!

I sent them this sketch.

As an exercise in discipline and productivity, I began doing little sketches in a Strathmore pocket sketchpad.

I've been drawing ink bottles in my sketchpad a lot as of late. I suppose the attraction derives from the values created by the varying reflective surfaces of glass and plastic along with the shapes and textures. Fun times drawing this little bugger!

Inspiration: Freezing Rain

Result: Not impressed by Mother Nature

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Sakura Micron in a Moleskine Plain notebook

Location: home (waiting to leave before my trip was cancelled)

Note: I was supposed to go out of town this weekend but Mother Nature had other ideas and sent freezing rain to glaze my world like a giant ice encrusted donut. Power (and heat) just came back on after 12 hours.....and I am grateful it was ONLY 12 hours. I spent most of the day on the couch with blankets, cats and a book.

The book in case you were wondering: Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us (a must read in my opinion)

Inspiration: Dr. Who

Result: Bow Ties are Cool!

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Copic MultiLiner SP 0.03 in a Stillman & Birn Epsilon series sketchbook ( 21.6 cm 27.9 cm / 8 1/2" x 11")

Location: Home

Note: My 12 year old son and I have been watching a lot of Dr. Who lately and it's become a running joke around the house to just randomly proclaim that 'bow ties are cool!' I'm sure the owl Doctor has been done a bazillion times before but I just had to get it out of my system :)

VICTIM OF LOVE

Born Bad

Music & lyrics by Elton John & Pete Bellotte 1979

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You've been crying

And there ain't no use denying

It was me

Who put you through this misery

And I'd like to say I'm sorry

But I can't, no I can't

Nothing's gonna change me

Baby, that's the way I am

I was born bad

Always been the same, yes I was born bad

Never gonna change 'cause I was born bad

Only me to blame 'cause I was born bad

Yes I was born bad

Always been my habit, I was born bad

Just can't seem to help it, I was born bad

Always gonna happen, I was born bad

'Cause I was born bad

I mistreat you

And you know I always cheat you

But that's me

And that's the it's always been

And I'd like to say I'm sorry

But I can't, no I can't

Nothing's gonna change me

Baby, that's the way I am

Inspiration: Lots of squirrels in the yard today

Result: Bubblesqueak

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Platinum Carbon Fountain Pen in a Stillman & Birn Epsilon series sketchbook ( 21.6 cm 27.9 cm / 8 1/2” x 11”)

Location: Home

Note:...the rodent militia has been busy dashing about garden & deck, stuffing their faces with seeds & entertaining my cats....so I was inspired to draw a squirrel. I hesitated when committing to filling in the figure with shapes instead of fur...those first few circles being the hardest...but once you start you just gotta go for broke now that you've laid some ink. Good self challenge.

Inspiration: Joulupukki / Yule Goat

Result: naughty goat

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Micron 005 & 02 pens, in a Moleskine plain journal

Location: At home

Note: The word for Santa Claus in Finnish is Joulupukki/Yule Goat and a straw goat is a traditional symbol of this festive season. This is a nod and a wink to family in Finland :)

....and I wanted to draw a cute goat. Maaaaaa.
