These pale green assassin bugs are beautiful but deadly predators on other bugs they find in the forest. Amazingly, they can produce glue from glands on their front leg to lay sticky traps on the leaves and then sit back and wait for a hapless bug to get stuck there. They then stab said prey with a long needle-like beak and inject enzymes into the captured insect to dissolve its insides - sucked out then through that "straw" like a milkshake. Something to think about next time you visit the local soda shop.

What's even real? It's not even about flesh or plastic anymore. Might as well tear it all away.

At first glance this meadow fritillary seems to be drinking nectar from the wild bergamot flower just like the silver-spotted skipper was. But look closer and you will see a small white leg wrapping itself around the fritillary's head! The fritillary has just been captured by a camouflaged jagged ambush bug that was hiding out on the wild bergamot blossom and was just waiting for a careless butterfly to stop by. The jagged ambush bug looks somewhat like a robust praying mantis and immediately injects an immobilizing poison into the butterfly or other potential prey that could include just about any bug. A few days ago I posted a photo of a garden spider with its meadow fritillary catch here at Ludwig Prairie. If I come back to earth in some future life as a butterfly, I sure hope I'm not a meadow fritillary for that would likely be a short stay.

"If you're walking in the woods, you're probably going to get more annoyed by a loud, screeching bird call than a soft, complex birdsong. But dark-eyed juncos are just the opposite. These birds will find and fight their soft-singing peers.

Now, lest we think of dark-eyed juncos as simply the philistines of the animal kingdom who go about brawling with any bird that inject a little creativity into its birdsong - which, I'll admit, is a most entertaining thought - there's a more straightforward logic at play here. As with most things, it's all about mating and reproduction.

Males juncos will let out a loud, boisterous call when they're asserting their territory, but they'll favor a softer, more melodic song when they're trying to attract a mate. Researchers at Indiana University found that, when they played these two different songs for some male juncos, the birds completely ignored the loud song but actively searched for whoever was making the softer call.

In the wild, any male junco that goes hunting for the fellow junco behind that song is basically looking for a fight. It appears the birds are far more interested in maintaining their access to potential mates than they are protecting their territorial claims. They may not be philistines, then, but it does appear the juncos care far more about sex than land...which I suppose, as these things go, it's a fairly sensible decision."

At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines

Sprung from cages out on highway 9,

Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin out over the line

Baby this town rips the bones from your back

Its a death trap, its a suicide rap

We gotta get out while were young

`cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

Predatory Stink Bug Podisus sp. nymph feeding on a Periclista sp. sawfly larva on oak. The stink bug injects enzymes through its mouthparts to liquify the insides of its prey for slurping up like a milkshake.

The eyelash viper is nocturnal and arboreal. It hunts from late evening through early morning. It is one of the smallest venomous snakes in Central America, but one of the most dangerous. When subduing its prey, the snake grabs it and holds on while it injects venom.

The eyelash viper gets its name because of its pointed scales above its eyes. These "eyelashes" may also serve as camouflage as it makes it more difficult for predators to find the snake in the foliage of the tree.

The color of the snake depends on the geographical origin and can range from olive green to bright yellow and red. The scales of this species are rough and sharp. It is thought that this adaptation protects them from branches and vines that they encounter when traveling through the trees.

8x10 darkroom print

This is an experimental darkroom print from my "Aftermath" series. I am really happy that this print was purchased to be used in an album cover by a Japanese band Calme Adiction. Here is a link to where it appears calmeadiction.bandcamp.com/track/land-of-ulcer-live-ver

Also I'm really happy how the solarization turned out, it's a pretty hard darkroom technique.

Aftermath is a photography series I created during the pandemic, using a range of experimental techniques to explore the human condition in times of crisis. By employing methods such as film soup, developing color film with black-and-white chemistry, and innovative and alternative darkroom printing, I aimed to reflect the uncertainties and disruptions of the era. The work delves into themes of resilience, vulnerability, and the broader existential challenges posed by capitalism, offering a layered social commentary on our shared experiences during turbulent times.

Ryhope Pumping Station

All-in-all, this past week has been a bit rubbish, heartbreakingly traumatic funeral, follow-up hospital visit after surgery on my foot (thanks, chemo) and a healthy dose of poison via canula. I am grateful that this weird drug has been invented and that I'm able to have it, so many in the United Kingdom are denied this treatment because they're caught up in the post code lottery, but it's still tough having it. I am achy in my bones and really longing for a chilled glass of wine, but we don't have any in the house so it'll be a long longing...

The Cadillac STS (an initialism of Seville Touring Sedan) is a mid-sized luxury 4-door sedan manufactured and marketed by General Motors from 2004 to 2011 for the 2005 to 2011 model years.

The standard powertrain was a direct-injected 3.6 L V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which in the STS produced 302 hp (225 kW) and 272 lb⋅ft (369 N⋅m) of torque.
