Inbetween the heavy showers came beautiful light. A quick stop on the Skye Bridge before the heavens opened once again. As i jumped in the car unsurprisingly i noticed a few others lined up too.

It’s that strange, inbetween time of year—the lull between Christmas and New Year—when the days blur together and everything feels a little indulgent. Outside, the world is still lit with fairy lights and leftover good intentions. Inside, I’m draped across Larry's new blue sofa, black dress on, legs stretched out like I’ve nowhere else to be… because I don’t.

Larry does that thing he does, hopeful, charming, already halfway to a plan. He asks me to wear something nice and let him take me out, as if I’m not already doing my part, as if this isn’t something nice! I watch him from the corner of my eye, chin propped in my hand, enjoying the ritual of it.

I tell him I love that he wants to go out. I really do. But I simply cannot face another evening of cheese and port. Not now. Not in this strange no-man’s-land of the calendar where I’ve already eaten my body weight in festive excess and my soul is begging for mercy. One more artisanal wedge and I might lose my will to flirt.

So I smile, slow, feminine, a little wicked, and tell him the truth. That I want to stay in.

That I’d rather let the year wind down quietly, with him, right here.

“Let’s stay in,” I say softly. “You can admire me from there.”

And just like that, the plan dissolves. No coats, no cold air, no overthought menus. Just the hush of that in-between season, the comfort of staying put, and the delicious certainty that sometimes the most tempting nights happen when you decide not to go anywhere at all.

It seemed the whole world was wearing leopard skin prints last year. Ever, the tailender ... I finally caught up, this year!

Why then do we so often fail? We fail, says Heschel, because of indifference: This is the tragedy of every man, “to dim all wonder by indifference.” Life is routine, and routine is resistance to wonder . . . said the Baal Shem[,] “Just as a small coin held over the face can block out the sight of the mountain, so the vanities of the living block out the sight of the infinite light” (GSM 85).

"In my ideal world there won't be global warming, and there won't be war and hate.

I have a strange fear; when I think of there’s a universe and that there is nothing else out there, I can't get my head around it, and I get muddled up in my thoughts. I find it quite frightening.

My ambition is to dance on pointe in ballet - on the tip of my toes. That would be exciting for me"
