Big Sur Sunset

Last week I promised I would reveal the photo today that I took during the video above, and here it is.

I guess you can get the sense from that video how windy it was! What a crazy day... I spent all afternoon and evening getting ready for this. There was a decent amount of hiking, preparation, and walking-around to figure out the best place to stand.

Maybe the bad thing about that video is showing how easy it all appears to be... in future videos, you may see some more of the problems that I face and how I deal with them. In some ways, I think that is more real than something that appears to fairy-book perfect!

On the left side of this before and after image is a pile of simulated lunar soil, or regolith; on the right is the same pile after essentially all the oxygen has been extracted from it, leaving a mixture of metal alloys. Both the oxygen and metal could be used in future by settlers on the Moon.

Samples returned from the lunar surface confirm that lunar regolith is made up of 40-45% percent oxygen by weight, its single most abundant element.

“This oxygen is an extremely valuable resource, but it is chemically bound in the material as oxides in the form of minerals or glass, and is therefore unavailable for immediate use,” explains researcher Beth Lomax of the University of Glasgow, whose PhD work is being supported through ESA’s Networking and Partnering Initiative, harnessing advanced academic research for space applications.

“This research provides a proof-of-concept that we can extract and utilise all the oxygen from lunar regolith, leaving a potentially useful metallic by-product.

“The processing was performed using a method called molten salt electrolysis. This is the first example of direct powder-to-powder processing of solid lunar regolith simulant that can extract virtually all the oxygen. Alternative methods of lunar oxygen extraction achieve significantly lower yields, or require the regolith to be melted with extreme temperatures of more than 1600°C.”

The process involves placing the powdered regolith in a mesh-lined basket with molten calcium chloride salt serving as an electrolyte, heated to 950°C. At this temperature the regolith remains solid.

Passing a current through it causes the oxygen to be extracted from the regolith and migrate across the salt to be collected at an anode. It took 50 hours in all to extract 96% of the total oxygen, but 75% can be extracted in just the first 15 hours.

Beth adds: “This work is based on the FCC process – from the initials of its Cambridge-based inventors – which has been scaled up by a UK company called Metalysis for commercial metal and alloy production.”

“We are working with Metalysis and ESA to translate this industrial process to the lunar context, and the results so far are very promising,” notes Mark Symes, Beth’s PhD supervisor at the University of Glasgow.

James Carpenter, ESA’s lunar strategy officer comments: “This process would give lunar settlers access to oxygen for fuel and life support, as well as a wide range of metal alloys for in-situ manufacturing – the exact feedstock available would depend on where on the Moon they land.”

“It could also be used to extract useful materials on Mars as well, where pre-processing the feedstock would give pure metals and alloy products,” adds ESA materials engineer Advenit Makaya.

This published research can be found here.

This week is Space Resources week, including a two-day workshop on space resource utilisation, hosted jointly by ESA and the Luxembourg Space Agency, with researchers from across Europe discussing the future use of lunar, martian and asteroid resources.

This image is made from a three exposure stack using luminosity masks in Photoshop. A technique I will be using a lot more in future, especially when shooting directly into the sun, as it creates a very natural and clean result.

Taken in NYorks, UK.

*The EXIF has no lens info. as I used a Samyang manual only 10mm - which is 15mm on my cropped sensor X - T10. There is no electronic communication between the two. In future, I will just add Samyang here so that your viewing of the shot is a little better informed :-)

A DC MOC from Ben?!?! Whattt!!! ... This isn't Marvel!

Yeah man DC is rad, and so was the Aquaman movie! After buying the set based off of the movie, I just had to make a vig with those figs. Really happy with this one. Would love to play with 'underwater stuff' again in future!

Also I would've posted detailed pictures on MOCpages or Brickshelf, but both site aren't working (I can upload to MOCpages but the images become dead links, and Brickshelf I can't login or even create an account) ... Anyone know what's up there?

– Why have I chosen RSS Korolev? Every captain wants such ship. Fast. Huge. Convenient. Never mind, I m just joking. Someone else would say something about a new frontier and a spirit of discovery. As for me, it s just a new experience. You know, if you are captain, it s almost impossible to find anything except cargo ship. Or a liner for the lucky ones. It s not bad, but those routine delivery missions are too identical. Fly somewhere, take cargo, go back, repeat. This research voyage is completely different. Much more responsibility. There are larger cargo ships, but the crew is always low, a couple of dozens at the biggest ones. And all of them are captain s subordinates. Captain is a god on his ship. Here… everything is different. Hundreds of scientists are not just passengers. I have to change course if some astronomer finds some unusual star or if a biologist decides to scan particular planet for life. It s a bit annoying. Some more conservative person could find such situation real headache. But I don t want to return to the freighters.

– They can say everything they want, but NavSystems was a general sponsor of this mission. So our aim is establishing new hyperspace routes and correcting old ones. Most expansive and complicated equipment of this ship are all kinds of hyperspace scanners. Laying a new route isn t a simple task. You have to keep in mind many factors to make it fast, reliable, safe, economic. And profitable for company. Days, when ship had to have huge powerful expansive computer onboard to calculate hyperjump, are gone. Companies like NavSystem provide access to their servers to make calculations as simple as it possible. Global hyperspace beacon network collects all necessary data; servers process it and give all parameters of a jump for a fair payment. This entire infrastructure has high running cost, so we can t do it for free.

– Those bastards from the “navigators guild” think they are masters here. But most of them don t even understand that their precious hyperroutes are useless if nobody wants to use them. Every journey needs a reason. The most common and obvious one is valuable resource deposit. Humanity needs more resources for further expansion. That s why we should check every possible planet, moon or asteroid belt. Moreover, every planet is unique and can tell scientists something new and may be important. We ve already done several discoveries. But “navigators” always hurry us up if they find star system useless for them. We must do something.

– This expedition has already given us good results. We collected tons of information and statistics. It will help for new colonists a lot. Some people hope we can find one more earth-like planet. It will be a great success. However, we checked thousands of planets and none of them is suitable for human without any special equipment. We even found some samples of life, but it were just bacteria and a couple of simplest seaweeds. Space is a dead place. I hope we can change this in future.

I spent the day with my friend in Hayfield today; he showed me this abandoned pool in the forest. The place is a photographer's goldmine!

Vernissage on a painting of "Gadekæret in Skovlunde"

by the artist Marius Djurslev (painted approx. 1890). The painting by the relatively unknown, local artist will in future hang at the town hall together with more well-known painters such as Peter Brandes and Sámal Joensen-Mikines. Also present at the vernissage were former mayor Ove Dalsgaard and Marius Djurslev's granddaughter (the nice lady who reveals the painting).

The town hall, Ballerup.

Pangong Tso is one of the most beautiful lakes I came across in my life. It is a 137 Km long lake which extends from India to Tibet/China. All together it covers 604 sq. km. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water.

This was shot from the location where we stayed near the lake. I also shot a panorama at the same time which I will share some time in future.

Hope you enjoy viewing this shot.

We haven't seen this beautiful young fox in the garden before this evening but it seemed to know its way around.

No time to get the camera set up properly and a bit gloomy so a high ISO. I shall have to watch out for it in future. Taken hastily through the spare room window after my wife spotted it.

Just like the eagle gliding around and surveying his territory , I'm off to check out the lifestyle of a "snowbird" to see if that may suit me in future winters. I will be away from Flickr for a while so Happy Flickring to everyone out there.

we all love taking photos of raindrops ...

while hanging around, after the warm rain of the tropics, in the middle of night ( I just want to put U in the right mood while looking at this image ) ... I noticed how nice this colorful map looked condensed with drops of rain ... the shot came out quite interesting and I want to use this photo and some other in my photo-book project from my trip to Punta Cana in future ...

The locomotives designated in Russia "E" were built for Tsarist Russia during WW1 on three American locomotive plants, ALCO, Baldwin and Canadian Locomotive Company under common terms of reference to have 2-10-0 class locomotive. The class gave semi-formal naming of the E type in Russia: "The Russian decapode". A lot of work were needed to unify their final design between so proud producers. There were few generations and orders during active phase of the World War. After the war ending the new order for production of 500 locomotives (with option of 1000 in future) was canceled due to the inability of new Russia to pay the rest of the war credit. From this order 100 already built locomotives have been transported in Russia, but another 200 left in US where were rebuilt to European gauge and worked on Erie, Seabord Air Line railroad and others. Totally 881 locomotives built by ALCO, Baldwin and CLC were sell to Imperial and Soviet Russia. They worked mostly in Siberian region and on the Far East of Russia.

Well… I have FINALLY convinced my boss to do a National Parks calendar this year. This is the calendar that I am the most excited about right now. Almost every calendar we do is of just one specific state, or park. I've been trying for four years to convince him to do a few more 'general' calendars, that cover a larger variety of the incredible scenery the southwest has to offer. Last year, we finally did a 'Scenic Southwest' calendar, with a nice variety of photos ranging from the coast of California to the mountains of Colorado. I was pleased that, that calendar sold quite well.

We are still doing the 'Scenic Southwest' calendar this year. All 12 photos are still mine but I am not as happy with some of the photo selections that made it into that calendar this year as last year's calendar. Then, we decided at the last minute to finally try out the National Parks theme. This was an extreme latecomer to the calendar year. It wasn't printed until around September, which is EXTREMELY late to get them in stores. Most of our calendars are printed around March, to get them into giftshops in time for the summer tourist season.

So… Anyway… All 12 photos in the National Parks calendar are mine, and I selected them all myself so, I'm really excited about this one. It came out so late in the season, it will be hard to gauge sales of this one versus our other calendars that were printed six months ago. I really hope we can continue doing these in future years. I really think this has potential to be our best selling calendar. Most people who come out here to visit the national parks, don't visit just one, they visit several. Seems like a National Parks calendar would be a perfect souvenir to buy.

If anybody would be interested in a copy, either for yourself, or, if you're looking to find the perfect holiday gift for someone who you don't particularly like, but, feel obligated to buy something for… Stick them with one of these. If you live in the southwest, you're likely to see a rack of our calendars near the checkout line in any giftshop, gas station, or grocery store. If you would like to mail order one, you can do that through the company I work for.

If anyone would like to mail order one, here are a few links.

Here is a link to the National Parks Calendar.

All the photos that calendar are mine. Most of our other calendars, on average, half the photos are mine. The rest are from freelancers.

I was craving to create some photos in water and for summer 💦

I remember first photos I took in water, I was amazed by resoults, without any prop or effect. This white color add so much scene and I am thinking to use this effect even more in future!

When asked what did you do when storm Arwen hit the UK with sub zero temperatures and howling winds of over 90mph. Causing death and destruction onthe same day as the Omicron variant of cover came to the shores of the UK prompting a media frenzy and mass panic? I shall reply "I lay calmly on the floor in an airfield with 70 other people and took photos of a puddle between gusts"

after weeks of rain in august ...its new of seeing people bring handmade flowers to the graves at the cemetery ! We know of the form of the natural flowers, and so are able to build them artificially.

Same as with our own bodies !

Here are the NEWS of how we are able to rebuild our body organs as well ..not artficially !

But with our own knowing ! ..new (and old) methods found out in Russia.

This is a message for me about who we are in truth ..and what we are able to change and do TODAY and in Future, again: rebuild ourself !!!!

VIDEOS about the methods and the reports about re-growing of organs and teeth ..

Ensconced In Velvet

I actually built this about a year ago. I then promptly dropped it while setting up at BrickFair. Since then it's been in a box awaiting repairs. I finally got around to patching it up and here it is. I wanted to build a full house with siding, so I looked for the cheapest slopes I could find. Lavender it was. So based on that, I decided this was the kind of place a grandma would live, and based my design decisions on that. It was an enjoyable experience, but there are definitely some structural things I would change in future builds.

Spotted this gentleman at junction of Harajuku station with a large format camera. Seemly taking his own sweet time to capture the passing crowd. This is what I hope to do when I retire in future so of course I asked him to pose for a pic of my "future self" :)

Sunset view of Edinburgh and Calton Hill, Scotland

First photo from my recent trip to Edinburgh: Sunset view of the old town from Calton Hill. When going to Edinburgh I was sure it's gonna rain all the time, because well it's Scotland :). But the weather was mostly really nice during my whole 5-day stay there. So stay tuned for more shots from Edinburgh in future!

A semi-shaved look will be up later in the week as well as a couple of variations and short style boy-cut too.

The turnaround time is a little slow while we catch up on commissions but since we will be working on wigs full time, its going to be a lot quicker in future c:

Gill and I are so delighted by the reaction and support that we've received on the photos we've posted from our time together. It's wonderful to get so many comments about our relationship. We are already looking forward to getting to spend time together again.

One of the things we enjoyed doing last week was having her spend a bit of time as my maid since she has the appropriate uniform. Being able to explore this dynamic is one of the things we particularly enjoy about being a couple and it will be fun to do more of that with her in future ;)

A modification on my Bentley build, I wanted to give it more of a flashy custom look, this was my first attempt at doing decals (simply paper and glue) and I added classic racing decals to the body. The shark mouth design was a nice touch too, giving it a fighter plane look. I think I will in future try and get some custom printed sticker decals to use for this. But it was mainly an experimentation to see if my ideas would work.

Yellow Empress has been an idea I've used a number of times and most likely will revise slightly over time. Her creation was used for my Insurgence story. About a young man named Arthur who lives in a dystopian 1920s Britain ruled by a right winged fascist dictatorship known as the New Albion Empire after being wrongly imprisoned for being a homosexual, Arthur would be rescued by Nemo's daughter Janni Dakkar (who is the second captain nemo) Onboard The Nautilus Arthur would meet Nemo's group of outcasts, Including Thomas Paragon (the former of the Paragon motoring company, where Chitty chitty bang bang was created). Joining Nemo's crew in fighting the injustice of the New Albion Empire, Arthur would be taught in the ways of swordsmanship, whilst forming a close bond with Paragon, who both work together in building a highly advanced automobile (Dubbed Yellow Empress). The car features an array of weapons and gadgetry, and would be used after Arthur's departure from The Nautilus, where he would go on to investigate the paranormal activity of the world, fighting monsters and ghosts along the way.

Tomorrow will mark 2 months since this amazing session with Cindy. I often wish I was back there though I know there'll be more BWBG visits in future. These will be my last uploads from this particular visit but maybe I've left the best until the end ;)

Ex LMS Stanier Class 5 5MT 4-6-0 45231 The Sherwood Forester passes Scout Green nearing Shap summit on the West Coast Main Line (WCML) heading 1Z44, the 08:49 Preston to Carlisle.

The Black 5 was at the head of The Lakelander from Leeds to Carlisle with steam motive power taking over at Preston.

This was a Saphos Trains excursion operated by Locomotive Services Limited (LSL).

The Black 5 was going well at this stage with 12 on and no great audible evidence of diesel shovage, a few minutes after restarting following a water stop up the line at Grayrigg near the M6 motorway.

I think this may be the first time I have seen this loco.

What I am certain of is that it is the first time I have seen any loco sporting a microphone on the smokebox door!

I was aware of the presence of the microphone having seen a photo on shed the previous day. However, since I am not trying to authentically recreate 1963 but capture the present day then it stays on my photo.

Controversial I know as many have removed it from theirs.

In future it may be known as the day the LSL Black 5 ran with a large microphone. Anyhow, I digress ...

For the record, it was there to capture sound recordings for the DCC system on a new Ellis Clarke model of a Black 5.

This was the second Ex LMS loco we saw in the space of a couple of hours that morning.

Several key science payloads will be delivered to the International Space Station (ISS). Among these is a biomedical investigation that focuses on the mechanisms behind neuroinflammation, a condition associated with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis. This study will utilize 3D brain models derived from patient stem cells to explore potential treatments.

Additionally, the mission will carry the Multi-Resolution Scanner (MRS), which will use the Astrobee autonomous robot aboard the ISS to create detailed 3D maps of the space environment. This technology could have significant applications in future space exploration, allowing for automated assessments of spacecraft damage and other remote monitoring tasks

These research initiatives are part of NASA's ongoing efforts to leverage space-based research for both Earth-based health advancements and the development of future spaceflight technologies.

The launch date was Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at 2:29 AM (UTC).

This bell hangs on the St. George's church somewhere in West Virginia. We were following our noses down a single lane road that ran mostly along a river (I think the Potomac ...or a tributary of it) and came to this small camping area with this log cabin church. There was a sign outside telling what it was and no lock on the door so yes of course we explored! Inside it was beautiful and peaceful. It had a plain alter, a small organ and about a dozen pews and in one corner stood an ornate pot bellied wood stove. The light streamed in the two windows along one side and next to the door was a small, hand written sign that said, if you don't respect this as a house of God then at least respect it for it's antiquity and don't vandalize it. We truly never do know what we will come upon on our adventures. More of this church in future posts I am sure! Hope everyone is staying as safe as possible out there. :)

I can take no credit for the popularity of this photo. The camera was pointing straight up and the weight of the lens was causing it to zoom out by itself. The results looked interesting but I had no idea they would be interesting.

- The offending lens was the otherwise excellent Nikon 18-200mm VR. This is my only annoyance with it so far. In future I may just have to carry a small roll of tape with me for such occasions.

Autumn vibes in the beautiful Monschau 🍁.

Monschau has been on my bucket list for years and finally few weeks ago I was able to get there. To really enjoy the town and the scenery I think you'd need at least half a day. I only got to spend 2 hours there before having to go back - thank you Deutsche Bahn for the obligatory train delays 😃 - so I'll probably return in future for a longer stay .

You've all helped solve some of our Fergus O'Connor Collection "unknown location" photos very speedily over the last couple of weeks. Thought this one would be a toughie, but I was wrong!

Niall McAuley checked our catalogue (Note to self: Always conduct search of whole NLI catalogue in future!) and found a photo of this Killarney hotel in our Lawrence Collection. But any and all information about this Hotel still very welcome.

Gerry Ward contributed this very lovely description from Samuel Carter's Week in Killarney (1843):

"At Cloghreen, close to Mucross Abbey, there are two good hotels; they do not vie with the three we have named, but they are comfortable and somewhat extensive, and the charges are less than those of their rivals. “The Mucross Hotel” is close to the Abbey, and near to it is O’Sullivan’s Hotel. They are both near the foot of Mangerton, within half a mile of the Torc Waterfall – the most beautiful of the Killarney Falls – and on the direct route to the Upper Lake, and the “new line” to Kenmare. Their situation therefore is highly advantageous, being equally “convenient” to the three lakes; but “the view” is excluded by the tall trees of Mr Herbert’s demense."

And the man is still unidentified, and our date is very speculative...

Date: Circa 1900?

Urban railway (Stadtbahn) DT 8.4 train #3054 on line U34 at Südheimer Platz stop, Böblinger Str., Stuttgart, October 28, 2021

The urban railway in Stuttgart developed out of a 1000 mm tram network a normal-gauge light rail, partially located underground, which may be easily turned into a metro system in future. Currently the network is made up of 17 lines with the total lenght of 237 km. The rolling stock consists of 204 DT 8 units of several generations, designed especially for Stuttgart and manufactured by Düwag, AEG, Siemens, Bombardier and Stadler.

I thought I'd try and see if I could capture some of the Milky Way above the tower. The light pollution was pretty heavy from behind the building, coming from Fleetwood, but the galaxy structure can still be seen. Maybe I will have to try a light pollution filter in future to see if I can do better. The processing also made the building itself turn a stark black, but I quite liked the look, so I left it as is.

The King would be very happy that his patience and trust has been rewarded by being "Explored" this afternoon.

My friend called out yesterday mid-morning,asking if I'd get him some seed.It was a smart move on his part , as the Rainbow Lorikeets had long since moved on after eating everything I'd put out for them earlier.I was taking these shots from about 1.4 metres , which is as close as the Afs vr 70-300 mm will focus and he wasn't in the least put out by my presence. If anything ,it seemed to re-assure as he barely flinched when the mean Currawong swooped down between us.The first time it happened he flew away in terror. This is as close as I've come to showing the very fine red feathers accurately but still hope to do better in future. I took lots but will only show a couple as they are a bit "samey".The white background is still just an old shower screen on our garden shed.

I am now 10 years on flickr. Gush, how fast the time runs... I can say that it is a long way and you could follow the development of young unexperienced gurl to a mature lady. I hope i still could keep the charm and will be able to improve in future!

Thank you all, for being following me, giving me feedback and writing letters and comments! Thank you for the support and for the friends i habe found! ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️♥️

End of a beautiful day at Cape kiwanda - one of my most favorite beaches.

Back in January I made a weekend trip to Corvallis, Oregon. It was not a photography trip. I went there primarily to see friends and we had a great time. We spent Sunday driving around the coast stopping by at some of the popular spots such as Seal Rocks, Cape Perpetua, and Newport Lighthouse. The last stoppage before sun went down was at cape Kiwanda. What an awesome place it is! I will surely return there in future with more time at hand.

Simply Bhutan Project is a living museum and a photo studio. The project is aimed at preservation and promotion of culture being one of the four pillars of Gross National Happiness (GNH) by involving youth as the core group because they are the future leaders of the country. In doing so, the project generates employment opportunities to young job seekers and also provides skills through trainings and workshops. More importantly, the objective of the project is to raise fund to support YDF in conducting the many youth related programs, now and in future. Thus, the project is one of a kind in the country.

This image was taken in September 2022 at Rueun, where RhB Ge 4/4'' 620 'Zernaz' was working Regio Express RE1753, the Table 920 15:56 Chur to Disentis/Mustér. The locomotive and stock had earlier worked through from Scuol-Tarasp.

This particular locomotive is one of the initial batch of ten built by SLM in 1973 with the remaining thirteen class members added in 1984-85. For decades these splendid machines have operated as the standard RhB electric locomotive, with 2022 proving to be the last full year of regular passenger service operations on the Disentis route with only the Glacier Express workings to be covered in future. December 2023 produced the anticipated changes whereby these locomotive hauled RE services have been replaced by 'Capricorn' EMUs. No doubt, a number of the Class Ge 4/4'' machines will soon be retired from service.

A surprising number of builders went above and beyond to incorporate practical functions (lights, motorization) into their designs. Said builders have received an additional commendation on this year's poster.

Once again, the lack of a formal judging council means relatively few trophies compared to previous years. However, now that some new blood's stepped forward to manage the helm, new opportunities may manifest in future years.
