Remembering

Badges were an important part of the war effort. Soldiers wore the rising sun badge of the Australian Military Forces, as well as unit badges. Fundraising was accomplished at home by selling badges. Badges also indicated service and sacrifice.

Medals were given to returned servicemen and women in acknowledgement of their service and valour. Over 60,000 Australian service personnel died while on active service. This left a hole in many regional centres, as many of their young men never returned. Large medallions, commonly known as the ‘dead man’s penny’, were cast for families of those who had died.

The Returned Services League provided a place for camaraderie for those who had served and felt unable to talk about their experience of war with those who had not been there. Anzac Day became a focal point for acknowledging the sacrifices of those who had served and remains to this day Australia’s main day of remembrance.

Important tapestry at St Mary's Guildhall in Coventry.

The 'Coventry Tapestry' is the highlight of the historic collections at St. Mary's Guildhall, and is widely recognised as one of the rarest and most important examples of this art in the country.

Manufactured around the years 1495 to 1500, its significance lies not just in its age and remarkable state of preservation, but also in the fact that, incredibly, it remains hanging on the very wall for which it was created more than five hundred years ago.

At more than nine metres wide and three metres high, this magnificent artwork dominates the north wall of the Great Hall, and is testament to both the skill of its Flemish weavers, and the wealth of the city of Coventry at the end of the fifteenth century.

Appliances malfunction all the time, in homes and business premises too. How you deal with the breakdown is usually the greatest determinant of whether the appliance will work again, or you need to start shopping for a new item. Therefore, to save your appliance and yourself from unnecessary costs and expenses, here are a couple of useful tips on home appliance repair.

You need tools

Considering you will be the first person to notice the issues affecting your home appliances, some DIY repairs can be very helpful in fixing minor problems and alleviating the major ones. In that case, you will need more than just a screwdriver as a sidekick. There are dozens of affordable and well-stocked tool boxes available in the market. Buy one and store it in your house.

Once you have the tool box, go look for a multi-meter. You will need it to measure voltage and other important signals that identify faulty electrical components and wires.

Check the obvious issues

Every home appliance has its obvious problems which range from bad power settings to an unplugged cable. Always start with checking such problems before going deeper into the main components of the appliance.

Be sure to listen to moving parts. They have the highest failure rate which is caused by constant wear and tear. Any foreign noise coming from the fans and motors are clear tell-tale signs of an imminent malfunction.

Know your appliance

How well do you know your appliance? This is important because it makes your usage of the appliance and any DIY repairs very efficient and easy. For instance, seeing that most appliances have the refrigerant, it would be very beneficial if you took time to learn and understand the refrigerant cycle.

For gas-powered appliances, you must know where the ignition process is located and how it works. It is the one area that is constantly developing issues. Things to look out for include checking if pilot light is on, confirming that the starters are aligned correctly, and making sure nothing has been blocked with soot.

When it comes to the dishwasher and washing machines, the parts to watch out are the hoses. They are relied on to move water around the appliance, therefore in case of any leak or kink, you should inspect the hoses and surrounding valves. Get them re-sealed or replaced entirely if the leakage doesn’t stop.

Lastly check the seals and gaskets which are usually found on oven and refrigerator doors. Replace the ones with cracks or any other damages to avoid inconveniences when using the appliance.

Search for appliance error codes

The best thing about digitalization of home appliances is that you can easily diagnose a malfunction by looking up the error codes. You can search online or check the user manual, and from the results you will know if its fixable or you need to call a professional technician.

The 50% rule

This rule simply states that if your appliance is halfway through its expected lifespan, and the expected cost of doing repairs and replacements is more than 50% of purchasing a new appliance, then your best choice would be to go for a new appliance.

One of the largest and most important Moravian castles was first mentioned in 1267. The name is derived from the German Hohenstein, meaning "high stone". The owners were traditional Habsburg supporters, which positioned them against Czech kings, and after they were marked as bandits, king Wenceslaus II. sent the army under the command of his stepfather, who besieged and seized Hoštejn, executed the whole garrison and became lord of the castle. After his death the castle fell to the king, and was traditionally given to loyalists. In the early 15th Century it became one of the supporting strongolds of the Hussite movement, and in 1424 was attacked and seized by the army of Albrecht of Austria, who moved through the country eliminating Hussite supporters, but it was not demolished. It´s not clear when that happened and who did it, it must have happened between 1437 and 1446. The abandoned ruins became a bandit nest after the year 1500, and they had to be cleaned out by the army. The castle was never renewed and almost completely dissasembled through the centuries, only the church still stands in its original location. The area was never overgrown with trees, like is typical by abandoned ruins, and shows the disposition of the castle very well.

Micro Experiment

My first attempt at micro flower shot. And it proved what I learned from book before. I do need a tripod because my hands move sometimes. Without a tripod it's really not easy to take a clear shot. Also, enough light is important so the shutter speed can be faster. However, with tripod and photoshop light seems not that important. lol I guess I need to grab a tripod since I couldn't find an appropriate one at home. ;)

The Mae Tao Clinic (MTC), founded and directed by Dr. Cynthia Maung, provides free health care for refugees, migrant workers, and other individuals who cross the border from Burma to Thailand. People of all ethnicities and religions are welcome at the Clinic. Its origins go back to the student pro-democracy movement in Burma in 1988 and the brutal repression by the Burmese regime of that movement. The fleeing students who needed medical attention were attended in a small house in Mae Sot.

Since 1989 MTC has grown, from that one small house to a large complex of simple buildings that provide a wide variety of health services to different groups of people. Today it serves a target population of approximately 150,000 on the Thai-Burma border. Exact numbers are hard to calculate because of the fluidity of the population. About 50% of those who come to MTC for medical attention are migrant workers in the Mae Sot area; the other 50% travel cross-border from Burma for care.

Mae Tao Clinic Objectives:

1. To provide health services for displaced Burmese populations along the Thailand-Burma border.

2. To provide initial training of health workers and subsequent corollary medical education.

3. To strengthen health information systems along the border.

4. To improve health, knowledge, attitudes, and practices within local Burmese populations.

5. To promote collaboration among local ethnic health organizations.

6. To strengthen networking and partnering with international health professionals and institutions.

Millsaps College played an important role in World War II by educating young officers as part of the V-12 Navy College Training Program. At 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19 the College honored the V-12 classes with a ceremonial flag raising.

"The V-12 program is a highlight in our history at Millsaps," said Millsaps College President Dr. Rob Pearigen. "This is the start of a tradition that calls for flying the V-12 flag at Millsaps on the third Wednesday in October."

From 1943 to 1945, 873 officer candidates attended Millsaps College for the V-12 program that provided basic naval and marine training in addition to special curriculums in aviation engineering and pre-medical and pre-dental programs. Millsaps was one of only 131 colleges and universities with high academic standing selected as a site for training officers for the U.S. Navy and Marines.
