A site of power – both religious and industrial. Along with Llanthony Priory and Tintern Abbey, the ruins of Neath Abbey are the most important and impressive monastic remains in south-east Wales.

Neath Abbey described by John Leland in the 16th century as 'the fairest in all Wales', was forced to bear the scars of the Industrial Revolution. A 19th-century gentleman traveller was woefully to record that. Despite this, today it remains one of the most fascinating historic monuments in Wales.

Essentially, the ruins are those of an abbey founded by Richard de Granville in 1130, established as a daughter house of Savigny in Normandy. In 1147 it was absorbed, with all other Sivigniac monasteries, into the Cistercian order. Despite initial economic struggles, Neath became a fairly wealthy house, with extensive estates in Glamorgan, Devon and Somerset. Management and expansion of its Glamorgan estates led to a bitter dispute with the neighbouring abbey of Margam. The growing community soon outgrew the 12th-century buildings, and there were major programs of reconstruction spanning the 13th and 14th centuries.

There are very complete remains of the west range, dating from 1170-1220, originally occupied by the lay brothers who did much of the manual work on the abbey's estates. The superb 13th-century dormitory undercroft also survives. The abbey church was rebuilt on a grand scale between 1280-1330, and enough survives to illustrate the high quality of the architecture. In the south transept the night stair down from the monk's dormitory can still be seen.

The abbey was dissolved in 1539, and in 1542 passed to Sir Richard Williams, who was to give the site a new lease on life. It was probably Williams or his son who converted the south-eastern part of the cloister ranges into a grand mansion. It was skill fully raised over the monk's dormitory and latrine, and is easily recognised today by the large rectangular windows of dressed stone. By 1600, the house and property had passed to Sir John Herbert, and was occupied throughout the 17th century. Later the abbey precinct was turned into a copper smelting and casting workshop. In the early part of the 20th century the site was gradually cleared of the industrial debris left by this process.

The Tucapel Fort is a defensive construction located in the city of Cañete, in the VIII Region of Biobío, which was the scene of important events during the Arauco War.

As one of the first fortifications built in the Kingdom of Chile along with Purén and Arauco, it was founded provisionally by the conqueror Pedro de Valdivia in the year 1552, seven leagues from Arauco, with the aim of protecting the road to the cities of the south, Imperial and Valdivia. However, it was destroyed the following year during an indigenous attack led by Lautaro, in which Pedro de Valdivia died.

Governor García Hurtado of Mendoza ordered the Fort to be rebuilt a few years later, with two towers and a wall that surrounded the fort house that had existed on the site, which already had a moat. Furthermore, in its vicinity he founded the town of Cañete de la Frontera. The fortification soon suffered a new attack. In 1558 the Mapuche led by Caupolicán attacked the place again, but this time they were defeated and Caupolicán, captured, was impaled in the vicinity of the fort. Almost half a century later, the fortress was destroyed again after the battle of Curalaba, in 1598, in which the Spanish were defeated and Governor Oñez de Loyola died.

Depending on the vicissitudes of the war, the fort was abandoned and rebuilt several times. According to Gabriel Guarda, in his Flanders Indiano: Fortifications of the Kingdom of Chile, by 1647 it had three companies of cavalry and five of infantry, with a total of 540 seats, constituting one of the largest in the Kingdom, headquarters of the General Field Master. . .

By virtue of the agreements of the General Parliament of 1724, Governor Gabriel Cano de Aponte decided to move this fort to Laja, twelve leagues from Antuco, where it was renamed Tucapel de Laja or Fuerte de San Diego de Tucapel. The town of Tucapel was founded in that place some time later.

Already in the 19th century, in 1868, Colonel Cornelio Saavedra ordered the city of Cañete to be reimbursed, not where Cañete de la Frontera was, but 3 km. to the east, in the place where the old Tucapel Fort was located.

The Tucapel Fort was declared a Historical Monument in 1963. It currently functions as an open-air museum.

Ishpeming, Michigan

Listed 12/29/2015

Reference Number: 15000946

The Braastad-Gossard Building was erected in 1888 and remodeled and expanded in 1903-04 for Frederick Braastad as the home of his F. Braastad & Co. department store and then remodeled and modernized in 1948 while it housed the H. W. Gossard factory. The building meets national register criterion A and B because of its direct association with Braastad, who was an early, longtime, and leading Ishpeming businessman, and with the Braastad department store, a leading commercial institution in Ishpeming until its closing in the early 1920s. The building also meets critenon A under Industry and Social History for housing the Ishpeming plant of the H. W. Gossard Co., a Chicago-based women's undergarment manufacturer, from 1920 until1976. Gossard was for a time the leading employer in Ishpeming, with more than 500 employees on its payroll. Secondly, the firm's presence in Ishpeming relates to a broad Upper Peninsula mining town - and also national - industrial pattern of textile plants setting up shop in mining towns to take advantage of a potentially large and low-cost labor force of women from the mining families who would be willing to work to supplement the family income. In addition, Gossard's Ishpeming plant operating out of this building was the site of a strike in 1949 that is important in Upper Peninsula history for the leading role played by women in beginning and carrying out the strike.

Hughes Enginehouse played an important role in the operations of the Moonta Mine. Its function was to dewater the underground workings on the mine's largest orebodies. These orebodies, known as Elders and Elders West Lodes, were worked over a length of 1000 m and to depths of more than 700 m.

This classic Cornish enginehouse was constructed alongside Hughes Shaft by John Beaglehole between late 1863 and early 1865. It was named after Walter Watson Hughes, the founder of the Moonta Mining Co.

The building housed a 60-inch Cornish beam pumping engine installed under the direction of engineer Frederick May, and officially started by Captain Hancock on 2 September 1865. The engine and its installation cost £7000 ($1-2 million by today's standards).

The engine operated pumps in Hughes and Taylors Shafts which allowed mining of the main orebody below natural water level. It worked continuously, except for maintenance, for more than 58 years until closure of the mine in 1923.
