Hutong represents an important culture element of Beijing city. Thanks to Beijing’s long history and status as capital for six dynasties, almost every hutong has its anecdotes, and some are even associated with historic events. In contrast to the court life and elite culture represented by the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and the Temple of Heaven, the hutongs reflect the culture of grassroots Beijingers. The hutongs are residential neighborhoods which still form the heart of Old Beijing.
Hutongs (simplified Chinese: 胡同; traditional Chinese: 衚衕; pinyin: hútòng) are a type of narrow streets or alleys, most commonly associated with Beijing, China. In Beijing, hutongs are alleys formed by lines of siheyuan, traditional courtyard residences.[1] Many neighbourhoods were formed by joining one siheyuan to another to form a hutong, and then joining one hutong to another. The word hutong is also used to refer to such neighbourhoods.
Since the mid-20th century, the number of Beijing hutongs has dropped dramatically as they are demolished to make way for new roads and buildings. More recently, some hutongs have been designated as protected areas in an attempt to preserve this aspect of Chinese cultural history
A fine first edition example of Guillaume De L’Isle’s important 1724 map of Persia. Covers from the Crimea and the Sea of Azov south to the Persian Gulf and the Straight of Ormuz and east as far as Kashmir (Cachmir) and Kabul (Caboul). This map includes modern day Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, with adjacent parts of Russia, Pakistan, Turkey, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan, and Arabia. Cartographically De L’Isle’s mapping of Persia marks a significant advance in European cartographic knowledge of the region. This map benefits considerably from Russian cartographic surveys and other sources no doubt smuggled to Guillaume De L’Isle by his brother Nicholas de L’Isle, who held a cartographic position with the Russian Academy of Sciences. The extent to which Russian data influenced this map is nowhere more evident than in De L’Isle’s remarkable rendering of the Caspian Sea – one of the first accurate maps of the great lake to follow Van Verden’s historic survey of 1721. Russian cartographic information is also apparent with regard to place names, such as the Russian name for the Aral Sea (Glouchoiye). It is equally likely that De L’Isle drew on Russian sources for his mapping of the Silk Route centers of Bukhara, Samarkand, and Ferghana, which were known stopping points for Russian trade envoys to China. For the remainder of Persia De L’Isle most likely updated Persian and Arabic cartographic information with reports from Georgian and Armenian traders and mercenaries active throughout Persia. It may be through these sources that De L’Isle was able to add considerable geographic information regarding trade routes and place names in central Persia. These include such significant advances as the identification of Terheran (Tiheran), the current capital of Iran, which is notable absent it earlier European maps of Persia. This map was drawn by Guillaume De L’Isle and engraved by P. Starckman. It issued independently as well as included in a number of composite atlases including De L’Isle’s 1731 Atlas de Geographie . A number of reissues by Buache, Covens & Mortier, and others followed.

History
The Celler "Zuchthaus (jail)", as it is called in the colloquial language to this day, is regarded as the oldest prison in Germany still in function. Here, over three centuries, all the important phases of modern correctional system can be read conceptually and structurally. They range from the "Jailhouse" of the early 18th century to the "high-security tract" of the late 20th century. This can also be seen in the frequent name changes, a total of about ten times.
The prison was built between 1710 and 1724 as "workhouse, jail und madhouse". It was built in the French style by Johann Caspar Borchmann, the master builder of Duke Georg Wilhelm. At that time the institution lay still outside the city in the Westceller suburb. It was founded in order not to leave the prisoners to their destiny, but to educate them. This guiding principle, however, did not find any entrance into the Latin saying about the gate entrance "Puniendis facinorosis custodiendia furiosis et mente captis publico sumptu dicata domus" (to punish the evildoers, to guard the raving madmen and mentally ill from public resources erected house). The educational idea was an idea that had been implemented for the first time in Holland (Rasphuis Amsterdam). At that time the very different prisoners were still accommodated together in rooms.
In the historical inner courtyard of the building complex you can find the coat of arms of Chur-Hanover with the saying of the Order of the Garter "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (evil to him who evil thinks') and the motto of the English crown "Dieu et mon droit" (for God and my right). At the beginning of construction (1710), ruled George I Louis, Knight of the Order of the Garter, and later also King of Great Britain. In 1833, all mentally disordered people were transferred from the house to Hildesheim and the lawyer Georg Friedrich König from Osterode for free speech put in prison (the same house!). At the end of the 19th century, the institution was extended to the cell prison, the "isolation cell wing", a structure still valid today. Towards the end of the Weimar Republic it became Prussian "reform prison" under the director Fritz Kleist. New were, inter alia, gymnastics, radio room and readings for the prisoners as well as a museum. That is why the Celler citizens gave the prison the nickname "Café Kleist".
From 1934 political prisoners were arrested, as had been the case during the period of the Kingdom of Hanover and the German Empire, including the Celler KPD chairman Otto Elsner and workers of the Hanomag resistance group. Otto Marloh was one of the prison directors in the time of National Socialism. At the end of the Second World War, a total of 228 prisoners died from January until the invasion of the British on April 15, 1945, as a result of the poor prison conditions of the overcrowded jail. The dead were not buried in cemeteries, but buried hastily on the prison site. After the Second World War the prison was renamed several times, first in "penal institution", then in "prison", 1972 finally in "correctional facility". At this time, arose the new exterior wall made of concrete and a highly secured special unit for prisoners of the Red Army Faction. The installation of a modern stairs house in the late 1990s was the last major structural intervention.
Geschichte

This is a photograph from the second annual running of The Downs National School Valentines 5KM Road Race and Fun run which was held at The Downs GAA club, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath on Sunday February 9th 2013 at 12:00. The race was held as a fundraiser for the Downs National School. This is a very important fundraiser for the Downs National School new building project and the parents, teachers, and friends of the Downs National School and the neighbouring community are to be congratulated with the fabulous road race and social event that they organised. There was a great family atmosphere at the event and there was a very plentiful spread of refreshments afterwards in the Clubhouse. The event has grown strongly in it's second year. Community spirit was very evident. The Downs is part of the geographically very large parish of Kinnegad, Coralstown, and Clonard and there were many local participants from the parish. Well over 400 people took part in the event. The stormy wet weather of late cleared off. Whilst there was a strong headwind on the course for the final kilometer all in all the weather was very suitable for running.
The Downs is situated just off the M4 between Kinnegad and Mullingar and is accessed from Junction/Exit 14 on the M4 and following the R156.
The race starts on the Cloghan road (this is about 1KM from the GAA Clubhouse) and proceeds clock-wise around a circuit which takes in the main Killucan road. The race passes by the finish/race-hq on it's first loop. The road surface is a mixture of standard tarmacadam and gravel trail around by the forestry. Overall, the course is flat with just two very small hills for runners to content with. The course was very accurately measured and well marshalled.
The race is Athletics Association of Ireland approved. Timing was provided by Precision Timing who, as always, provided excellent timing and event management services on their day. Their website (with results from today's race) is available at: www.precisiontiming.net/result/racetimer
We captured a large set of photographs from the race today. The full set of photographs are available in the following Flickr set: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157640695491875/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!
Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets
Gurupurnima is the most important day in the year where we praise our Gurudev and thank him from the bottom of our hearts for everything that He is giving to us.
Devotees from all around the world gathered to celebrate this special day at the Shree Peetha Nilaya Ashram, the headquarters of Bhakti Marga, in Germany.
The Day started with Pada Puja followed by Guruji performing puja to His personal Deities. With that started the Bhajan Mala where all the devotees sang 108 Bhajans devoted to Guruji.
In the Evening there was Pada Abhishek to Gurujis feet and all the devotees could come and offer their love for Him.
The Day ended with a magical candle light dinner outside the main entrance.

Million views on Flickr ! I don't know how it's looks in general, but it's important milestone to me, since it means my view of the world is interesting to people. Thanks for viewing !
I uploaded my first picture to Flickr March 7, 2009. It was a shot of our lovely park (www.flickr.com/photos/obartunov/3334424663/). Since then I uploaded about 9 thousands pictures. I use Flickr as a general purpose photo-storage, so there are many just documentary pictures as well as pictures I really like. I have thousands of shots in my local archive, which I like to "walk through" and choose some shots, best suited to my current mood. That's why my photostream looks chaotic, without any order. Sorry, for this. I rarely sell my pictures, mostly because it's necessary. Usually, I respond "use as you wish with credits". I have a dream to make a book with pictures and stories. Pictures should say all without words, but I am not so genious, I need to explain my feeling. I tried to write a title and small info for every pictures I published, but it's not easy, sometimes, since I can't write well in english.
I started photography when I was teenager and wanted to make a shot of the Moon using my handmade telescope. I still have some of them. Then, I got present from my american grandfather - Polaroid camera. Can you imagine polaroid camera in 1975, in USSR, in a small town in steppe ! Unfortunately, I have only a few polaroid sheets for this camera. More seriously I started photography in 2004, when I bought compact Casio-Z3, then I upgraded to Casio-Z850 (still miss it) and Casio ex V9. I moved to DSLR in 2009, when bought Nikon D40+18-200 VR, but very soon I realized it's a bit limited and upgraded to Nikon D90. I made thousands of Himalaya shots with this camera. Eventually, I realized some people like my pictures and decided to move to full-frame camera. Nikon D700 gave me freedom and safety - make pictures at any conditions (sometimes, rather extreme). D700 was my trusty friend for 2 years and I was never dissapointed. Last year I upgraded to Nikon D800 and I am still learning it. I have small Fuji-X10 (looking for X20 now), which I like for its versatility and compactness. I did thousands of street shots with fuji. I have a bunch of lenses and like experimenting with old mf-lenses. I'm still amateur, native photographer. I never read books about photography and try to avoid photography forums and community. Just recently I realized, that there are 'my lenses', which I feel and like and I still open for new toys from ebay. I never used Photoshop, my workflow looks like ufraw->gimp, in some cases I use CNX2 instead of ufraw to process raw file. My primary OS is Linux and Mac OS X (since last year), I use virtualization to run CNX2.

I apologise for the poor quality of these photos but they were taken in very dark bush at low speed. However they show an important behaviour. The kaka cuts grooves in the bark of this mahoe tree and then, when sap starts to flow into the wounds, it uses its brush-tipped tongue to lap it up.
A parrot endemic to the forests of New Zealand.
There are two subspecies, the North Island Kākā, Nestor meridionalis septentrionalis, and the South Island Kākā, N. m. meridionalis. The name Kākā is a Māori language word meaning "parrot".
The New Zealand Kaka is a medium sized parrot, around 45 cm (18 in) in length and weighing about 550 g, and is closely related to the Kea (also native to New Zealand and the worl’d only alipine parrot) but has darker plumage and is more arboreal. The forehead and crown are greyish-white and the nape is greyish-brown. The neck and abdomen are more reddish, while the wings are more brownish. Both sub-species have a strongly patterned brown/green/grey plumage with orange and scarlet flashes under the wings; color variants which show red to yellow coloration especially on the breast are sometimes found.
The calls include a harsh ka-aa and a whistling u-wiia.
The New Zealand Kaka lives in lowland and mid-altitude native forest. Its strongholds are currently the offshore reserves of Kapiti Island, Codfish Island and Little Barrier Island. It is breeding rapidly in the mainland island sanctuary at Zealandia, Karori Sanctuary, with over 100 chicks hatched since their reintroduction in 2002 to the extent that Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, is now uniquely the only city in New Zealamd where kaka are returning to suburban gardens.
The New Zealand Kaka, like many parrots, uses its feet to hold its food. It feeds on fruits, berries, seeds, flowers, buds, nectar and invertebrates. It uses its strong beak to shred the cones of the kauri tree to obtain the seeds. It has a brush tongue with which it feeds on nectar, and it uses its strong beak to dig out the grubs of the longhorn beetle.
Kaka make their nests in hollow trees, laying clutches of 2 to 4 eggs in late winter. Both parents assist in feeding the chicks.
The New Zealand Kaka is considered vulnerabl. It has greatly declined, in part from habitat loss, in part because of introduced wasps, possums and bees, which compete with the New Zealand Kaka for food. Introduced stoats, rats and domestic cats also take a heavy toll of chicks and sitting hens.
Angels play an important role in Christmas celebrations. An Angel is a common symbol placed on the top of the Christmas tree, with Nativity sets, and with other Christmas decorations today to remind us of the real meaning of Christmas during the time we get all caught up in the hype of Santa and his arrival. Extraterrestrial Particles in ‘Major Breakthrough’ Using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica,
A belowground experiment at the South Pole has now discovered three of the highest-energy neutrinos ever found, for decades, scientists have been searching for ghostly neutrino particles from outer space, and now they have finally found them, researchers found the first evidence of neutrinos from outside the solar system since 1987.
These neutrinos Extraterrestrials on Earth, all have energies at the absurdly high scale of peta–electron volts that travelers from beyond our solar system.
Alien’ Neutrinos Detected in South Pole Ice,Neutrinos are a byproduct of cosmic rays, which contain high-energy matter and are of mysterious origin.

An important thing to remember is that even though pixel sizes keep getting smaller and smaller, the technology is advancing, so the smaller pixels are more efficient at collecting light. For instance, the Sony A7rII is back-illuminated which allows more photons to hit the sensor. Semiconductor technology is always advancing, so the brilliant engineers are always improving the signal/noise ratio. Far higher pixel counts, as well as better dynamic ranger, are thus not only possible, but the future!

View your artistic mission into photography as an epic odyssey of heroic poetry! Take it from Homer in Homer's Odyssey: "Tell me, O muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide after he had sacked the famous town of Troy. Many cities did he visit, and many were the nations with whose manners and customs he was acquainted; moreover he suffered much by sea while trying to save his own life and bring his men safely home; but do what he might he could not save his men, for they perished through their own sheer folly in eating the cattle of the Sun-god Hyperion; so the god prevented them from ever reaching home. Tell me, too, about all these things, O daughter of Jove, from whatsoever source you may know them. " --Samuel Butler Translation of Homer's Odyssey

Hej hej! Przed nauką postanowiłam 15 minut sobie pobazgrolić.. i przy okazji samego rysunku chciałabym wam zadać ważne pytanie: Czy ktoś z was byłby chętny na warsztaty z toreb zakupowych (a'la ta na zdjęciu) prowadzonych przeze mnie? Warsztaty miałyby się odbyć w Krakowie :)
Tutaj link do torby, na której uczestnicy by się wzorowali (na warsztatach byłaby trochę mniej skomplikowana): marysza.blogspot.com/2014/06/bag-dog-and-pl.html
// This post is mostly for Polish readers and/or people who will visit Cracow. I am asking If there is someone who would like to go on my Tote Bag Workshops. The bag in the link (and drawing) is the one we will try to make (only less complicated)! :)
