An important event as this was the first post-WW2 Ideal Home Exhibition as the event had been suspended during the war years. It was to be the 24th exhibition. As the contents note, the UK was 'hobbling along on crutches towards normality" and the exhibition would have given hope to many a dowdy war damaged household - but at the same time given austerity and rationing much of what was on display was unlikely to have been available in shops! The stylised cover shows the Olympia exhibition centre in West London where the event took place in March 1947.

Nara was founded in 710 CE as Japan's first permanent capital, and even after Heian-kyō (Kyoto) became the seat of the Emperor, and hence political capital, in 794, the temples and shrines of Nara, or Nanto Shichi Daiji, remained spiritually important – Nanto (南都) even means 'the southern capital'.

Oddly, Nara has only been a city since 1898, 29 years after the capital moved again, to Edo (Tokyo), but the eight major temples, shrines and ruins (plus Kasugayama Primeval Forest) of the 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara' UNESCO World Heritage Site make Nara a significant destination of pilgrimage – not least by tourists.

 

The most famous Shinto shrine in Nara is Kasuga-taisha, established by the Fujiwara family in 768, when the grand shrine's first kami is said to have ridden a white deer to the summit of Mikasa-yama.

This partly explains the large number of sika deer wandering Nara Park, 'sacred messengers' encouraged by tourists feeding them rice crackers – itself not entirely recommended, as they're wild animals and can be aggressive.

 

Another distinctive characteristic of Kasuga-taisha is the path (sandō) through the woods to the shrine, which is lined by over three thousand stone lanterns (ishidōrō/tachidōrō) like these.

Attractively weathered into their surroundings and colonised by ferns and moss, they are all lit for the Setsubun Mantoro and Chugen Mantoro festivals in February and August, marking the turn of winter to spring and the turn of summer to autumn.

The lanterns are hollow, of course – the white rectangles and – I think – the circles are paper glued over apertures in the stone, featuring people's ema wishes.

 

More specifically, this group of lanterns stands beside the main path into the Kasuga-taisha complex, at the Second Torii.

Samarkand is a city in southeastern Uzbekistan and among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia. Samarkand is the capital of the Samarkand Region and a district-level city, that includes the urban-type settlements Kimyogarlar, Farhod and Khishrav. With 551,700 inhabitants (2021)] it is the third-largest city in Uzbekistan.

 

There is evidence of human activity in the area of the city dating from the late Paleolithic Era. Though there is no direct evidence of when Samarkand was founded, several theories propose that it was founded between the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Prospering from its location on the Silk Road between China, Persia and Europe, at times Samarkand was one of the largest cities in Central Asia, and was an important city of the empires of Greater Iran. By the time of the Persian Achaemenid Empire, it was the capital of the Sogdian satrapy. The city was conquered by Alexander the Great in 329 BC, when it was known as Markanda, which was rendered in Greek as Μαράκανδα. The city was ruled by a succession of Iranian and Turkic rulers until it was conquered by the Mongols under Genghis Khan in 1220.

 

The city is noted as a centre of Islamic scholarly study and the birthplace of the Timurid Renaissance. In the 14th century, Timur made it the capital of his empire and the site of his mausoleum, the Gur-e Amir. The Bibi-Khanym Mosque, rebuilt during the Soviet era, remains one of the city's most notable landmarks. Samarkand's Registan square was the city's ancient centre and is bounded by three monumental religious buildings. The city has carefully preserved the traditions of ancient crafts: embroidery, goldwork, silk weaving, copper engraving, ceramics, wood carving, and wood painting. In 2001, UNESCO added the city to its World Heritage List as Samarkand – Crossroads of Cultures.

 

Modern Samarkand is divided into two parts: the old city, which includes historical monuments, shops, and old private houses; and the new city, which was developed during the days of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union and includes administrative buildings along with cultural centres and educational institutions. On 15 and 16 September 2022, the city hosted the 2022 SCO summit.

 

Samarkand has a multicultural and plurilingual history that was significantly modified by the process of national delimitation in Central Asia. Many inhabitants of the city are native or bilingual speakers of the Tajik language, whereas Uzbek is the official language and Russian is also widely used in the public sphere, as per Uzbekistan's language policy.

Welcome again, one and all. A bit of a shift in gears today, though nothing too crazy. Today, we look at one rare-ish Figma, SP-006 Cute from Queen's Blade Spiral Chaos.

 

So, once upon a time (2004 ish), Sony wanted to play ball in the portable console market to challenge the then leader, the Nintendo DS. What they came up with is the Playstation Portable, or PSP. Technologically, it could be described as a Playstation 1.5 - more powerful than the original PSX, but nowhere near PS2 levels. The system officially lasted until 2016, at which time the PS Vita (RIP) was in full swing.

 

As is the way with consoles, there are console exclusive games, and sometimes, these games come with exclusive goodies. Such is the case for several PSP titles, including the first Queen's Blade release - Spiral Chaos. Never played it, but I do know that the Collectors Edition Japanese releases came with an exclusive Figma.

 

The Figma is of a character named Cute, a Queen's Blade entry created specifically for this game. MSRP for this set was 9,800 Yen, which I believe was the game, a CD, the figure, and of course the sweet exterior box.

 

Well, I got bored enough and found a decently priced one on eBay - sadly it didn't come with the game or other goodies, but lets be honest I wouldn't exactly rush out to resurrect my PSP just for this one game.

 

The figure comes with a decent package for a pack in Figma - there's the figure, three total face plates (neutral, smiling, embarrassed), two blades, a variety of hands, a Shift Body, and the standard Figma stand.

 

Your first question right now.. what is a Shift Body? Well, in case you were not aware, Queen's Blade has a claim to fame - namely "battle damage" resulting in fighters becoming more and more naked. In most toys and statues, this is replicated by having a cast off feature, something that is even replicated in the Revoltech toys.

 

Well, Good Smile Company included a separate body to replicate this, which is nice in that it certainly doesn't compromise quality of the outfit on the Normal Body. The unfortunate thing is that the Shift Body is not fully articulated, and is meant to be displayed in one particular pose, outlined on the Instruction Sheet graphic.

 

The actual design of the character is quite impressive for a game specific appearance, and the Figma itself replicates game art and other such material I've seen. If you look carefully, you'll notice a bunch of yellow crosses - something that should be very familiar to you if you're a PSN gamer. The gauntlets and boots in particular are outlandish (in an good anime way) and they've been carried over to figure form nicely. I also really love the pouch Cute has on her waist. I also like the multilayering and pleats on the skirt.

 

Interestingly, from a size perspective, Cute is much bigger that the typical Figma 1.0 release, with proportions that are pretty consistent with more modern figures. Yukiko is pretty typical in terms of size of that era of release and Nat is a modern Figuarts (which I had handy) and is about the same size as your typical Figma release - again, all pretty impressive considering the exclusivity of the figure, the minor price increase compared to the standard game release, and the 2009 release date.

 

Articulation on the figure is average - she's got single jointed knees, hips, waist, shoulders with slight chest compress and bicep swivel, single jointed elbows, wrists, and head. Missing (which really hurts) is ankle articulation, which highly limits the dynamic posing potential of Cute, further made worse by the fact the skirt highly limits the range of motion of her upper legs. Couple this with the naturally stiff nature of the Figma 1.0 body, and you get a sense of Cute is probably going to spending more time on standing related poses.

 

From a paint perspective, this is a high quality product. Paint applications and finishes generally look sharp all over the figure, as well as the Shift Body - the weakest application that I could find would be the white on her torn undergarments. There is some paint build up in areas where you have finer details, such as bows, but its more something I noticed as opposed to being an eyesore.

 

In general, there's no real complaints with regards build quality. Good use of materials, joints do their job, limb length is proper. In general, QC is good, with the exception of those wrists. I have nightmares about breaking them as the pegs are attached to the hands themselves and replacing them is logistical nightmare. The good news is that the wrists are unlikely to break due because they have a hard time staying in slot, an issue further compounded by the cuffs that restrict how tightly you can press the hand in.

 

Overall, while a dated figure, Cute still looks pretty good and, more importantly, is very well done for a Collectors Edition add-on... of course we here in North America have been getting shafted for years for these sort of things, and everything looks good compared to us. The only real thing I'd have liked to have seen would be an additional "attacking" face plate.

 

Best of all, Cute isn't that expensive, and is probably the safest thing you'll ever find to display if you're a Queen's Blade/Gate collector.

Community has long been something very important to me, mostly because I remember what my life was like without it. While no community is perfect, much like no family is perfect, it warms my heart to have opportunities to engage with the various communities I have since become invested.

 

The annual CSX Santa Train has recently been one of those events that I have eagerly anticipated. This being only my second year following the train on its 110 mile route from Shelbiana, KY to Kingsport, TN, it was certainly a memorable one in both positive and not so positives aspects.

 

Since I arrived late at the famous Copper Creek trestle, rather than muscle my way into the photo line, I decided to incorporate the photo line into the shot, giving perspective that, while the train itself is important, so to are those that find enjoyment in coming out year after year, either chasing, volunteering or simply looking to catch a glimpse of Santa.

 

The CSX Santa Train has since become one of my favorite holiday traditions. I'm hoping to continue traveling to the mountains of Appalachia each November to witness this beautiful way the railroad brings the community together!

The Burgtheater on the Dr.-Karl -Lueger-Ring (from now on, Universitätsring) in Vienna is an Austrian Federal Theatre. It is one of the most important stages in Europe and after the Comédie-Française, the second oldest European, as well as the largest German speaking theater. The original 'old' Burgtheater on Michaelerplatz was recorded from 1748 until the opening of the new building at the ring in October, 1888. The new house was completely on fire in 1945 as a result of bomb attacks, until the re-opening on 14 October 1955 was the Ronacher as temporary quarters. The Burgtheater is considered Austrian National Theatre.

Throughout its history, the theater was wearing different names, first kk Theater next to the castle, then to 1918 K.K. Court-Burgtheater and since then Burgtheater. Especially in Vienna it is often referred to as "The Castle (Die Burg)" , the ensemble members are known as Castle actors (Burgschauspieler).

The 'old' Burgtheater at St. Michael's Square

The original castle theater was set up in a ball house that was built in the lower pleasure gardens of the Imperial Palace of the Roman-German King and later Emperor Ferdinand I in 1540, after the old house 1525 fell victim to a fire. Until the beginning of the 18th Century was played there the Jeu de Paume, a precursor of tennis. On 14 March 1741 finally gave the Empress Maria Theresa, who after the death of her father ruled a general theater lock order, the "Entrepreneur of the Royal Court Opera" and lessees of 1708 built theater at Kärntnertor, Joseph Karl Selliers, permission to change the ballroom into a theater. Simultaneously, a new ball house was built in the immediate vicinity, which todays Ballhausplatz is bearing its name.

In 1748, the newly designed "theater next to the castle" was opened. 1756 major renovations were made, inter alia, a new rear wall was built. The Auditorium of the Old Burgtheater was still a solid timber construction and took about 1200 guests. The imperial family could reach her ​​royal box directly from the imperial quarters with them the Burgtheater was structurally connected. On 17 February 1776, Emperor Joseph II declared the theater to the German National Theatre (Teutsches Nationaltheater). The "new" K.K. The Burgtheater was initially well received due to its magnificent appearance and technical innovations such as electric lighting of the Viennese, but soon criticism of the poor acoustics was loud. Finally, in 1897 the auditorium was rebuilt to reduce the acoustic problems. The new theater was an important meeting place of social life and soon counted among the "sanctuaries" of the Viennese. In November 1918, the supervision on the theater was transferred from the High Steward of the emperor to the new state of German Austria.

The Burgtheater in time of National Socialism

The National Socialist ideas also left traces in the history of the Burgtheater. With his directors like Alvis Hermanis, Roland Schimmelpfennig, David Boesch, Stefan Bachmann, Stefan Pucher, Michael Thalheimer and actresses like Dorte Lyssweski, Katharina Lorenz, Sarah Viktoria Frick, Mavie Hoerbiger, Lucas Gregorowicz and Martin Wuttke came firmly to the castle. Matthias Hartmann himself staged around three premieres per season, about once a year, he staged at the major opera houses. For more internationality and "cross-over ", he won the Belgian artist Jan Lauwers and his Need Company as "Artists in Residence" for the castle, the New York group Nature Theater of Oklahoma show their great episode drama live and Times of an annual continuation. For the new look - the Burgtheater presents itself without a solid logo with word games around the BURG - the Burgtheater in 2011 was awarded the Cultural Brand of the Year .

How important it is for us to remember those who have served their country (not just Canada) and made the ultimate sacrifice. Unfortunately, there are thousands more on this Continent and elsewhere across the globe, who have returned from fighting, only to live their lives in the suffering and torture that continues to haunt them. These men and women, too, so often tend to be "the forgotten", though I think there is a little more awareness now. So sad, when the rest of us have so much to be thankful for, thanks to them. I remember - and I am thankful.

most of my magazine collection (which I plan on reducing soon by cutting out the articles and photos I wanted, and giving the rest away) are all piled up in a plastic bin under my desk…

 

but here on this one shelf are some mooks, they are a bit more important and deserve to be on the shelf instead of shoved away… also they are more sturdy, I'm afraid the magazines would get ripped or warped if I stood them on the shelf like this (also… no room).

Union Station is a major railway station and intermodal transportation hub in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A variant of the versatile "Serial Rapist", the "Serial Stalker" was designed as a recon/sniper model. In this redesign, the standard sensor array was replaced with a more powerful model that would extend the VT's sensor range to five miles. The communications pack was upgraded and can now recieve images via satellite allowing the pilot to see virtually everything around him.

 

All this equipment is made even more important by the fact that the Stalker, while powerful, is extremely susceptible to ground attacks. Stalkers are protected by a crew of foot soldiers and the sheer impossibility of sneek attack.

 

In the conversion, the Rapist's 20mm rifle was replaced with a 70mm sniper rifle. The rifle's rounds make the weapon even more effective when they are equipt with a delayed explosive charge. Most are. Coupled with the advanced sensor array, a Serial Stalker can hit a target 4-5 miles away with ease. Tactical teams in which several Stalkers are linked can extend that range by several miles.

 

Stalkers are most commonly deployed on simple patrol missions with two or three Serial Rapists. Their sensors are put to the most use as they march down streets gathering information on civilians that might be discussing something the government strictly forbids, like vacation or marriage. On rare occasions they might catch wind of a coup which they can end immediately before the plotters even know someone's listening.

Water is the single most important natural resource underpinning Nepal’s economy and livelihoods. Inclusive, sustainable management of water resources in Nepal depends on addressing climate change and protecting healthy, biodiverse ecosystems.

 

The USAID Paani program will enhance Nepal’s ability to manage water resources for multiple uses and users through climate change adaptation and the conservation of freshwater biodiversity. Focusing primarily at the watershed, basin, and national scales, USAID Paani will reduce threats to freshwater biodiversity and increase the ability of targeted human and ecological communities in the Karnali, Mahakali, and Rapti river basins to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change through improved water management.

 

The program will play a pivotal role in shaping Nepal’s management of critical water resources between now and 2020. It will apply an integrated, whole-of-basin perspective to freshwater biodiversity conservation and sustainable water management in the three critical river basins in Mid-Western and Far-Western Nepal in response to changing climate conditions. Paani is part of USAID’s on-going investment in strengthening natural resource management in Nepal. It is a sister project to the USAID-funded Nepal Hydropower Development Project (NHDP) and complementary projects funded by the US Forest Service and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). It will build upon USAID/Nepal’s experience in terrestrial conservation, extending successful community-based models for reducing threats to key species and building resilience from Nepal’s high mountain slopes to the rich waterways in some of the most pristine natural habitat on the planet.

 

The families in Taule are benefiting from a solar-powered water pump that lifts 10,000 - 12,000 liters of water 68 meters from the river to the village's terraced fields. The eight member Sitaram Agriculture Group received 80,000 NRP ($800) in grants from USAID's KISAN and the Chhinchu-10 Village Development Committee. They also borrowed 27,500 NRP ($275) to construct the water tank, half of which they have already repaid.

 

The USAID Paani program has visited several small irrigation schemes supported by USAID KISANI. KISANI research has found that irrigation is the number one constraint limiting farmers' livelihoods.

**IMPORTANT PLEASE READ*** As most bus enthusiasts from the Southend area will know Arriva Southend has recently invested in 16 brand new Optare Versa's and when there is new buses that always means that buses will be replaced and in this case it will mark the end of 11 dennis dart SLF's (FPK dart batch 3387-3397) new to Southend Transport in 1997. These buses have been in Southend virtually all of their life and I for one do NOT want to see them scrapped. I want to see at least 1 saved for preservation. I know these buses well and will be very sad to see these buses leave for good. So I have a proposal which I need help with. I and fellow flickr member arriva3325 have an idea. We would love to see one of these buses preserved but it's a case of people knowing about this and willing to help. First of all we need to speak to Arriva, after all if they say no to the idea then thats that so thats the first step before anything else can take place.
