To combat undernutrition in young children, the Government of India relies largely on the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). Begun in 1975, the scheme provides health and nutrition education for mothers of infants and young children, along with other services, such as supplementary nutrition, basic health and antenatal care, growth monitoring and promotion, preschool non-formal education, micronutrient supplementation and immunization. Nurse Fathima Yousuf Ahmed (black hijab) is one of the nurses giving the vaccinations today. Shuib is being held by mother Fatuma Mohamed (red scarf and white polka dots on head scarf). Fatuma walked an hour to the health center, from Shabele IDP camp, to get her baby vaccinated.

Today at the Badbaado Health Center there is vaccination campaign for Penta 3 (for prevention of 5 diseases in children) and OBV (polio vaccine). In Jan 2011 the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI) and its partners are rolling out a new vaccine to prevent pneumonia in Kenya. In the developing world, pneumonia kills in the neighborhood of 1.4 million kids every year. Pneumococcal, the deadliest strain of that illness (and a major cause of what we might call “regular” pneumonia), kills 800,000.
Kenya's pneumococcal vaccine's official launch date is Feb 14, but we were able to photograph a clinic near the Kibera slum in Nairobi that already started providing the vaccine this week.
This health center is the Langata (sometimes called Kibera) District’s regional distribution center for the 36 clinics within the district. They collect all of the vaccines from the Regional Disbursement Center and, since they must maintain the cold chain to ensure the efficacy and safety of the vaccine, haul them back to Langata in well-used, white Styrofoam coolers. There, they are stored in an upright, avocado green refrigerator. But, it works and that’s what counts. They are then divided up and dispersed to the 27 clinics in the District that have trained personnel to give the vaccines.

A women with her 18 months old child has come at a camp in Danapur in Bihar for immunization organized by ministery of Health under the umbrella of Mission Indradhanush. Mission Indradhanush was launched by Union Health Minister J.P Nadda on December 25, 2014. It aims to immunize all children against seven vaccine preventable diseases namely diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, tuberculosis, measles and hepatitis B by 2020. The Ministry will be technically supported by WHO, UNICEF, Rotary International and other donor partners. Mass media, interpersonal communication, and sturdy mechanisms of monitoring and evaluating the scheme are crucial components of Mission Indradhanush..UNICEF has taken the initiatives to take on the campaign and make sure to immunize every child who had been left out earlier. The mission foresee to immunize children from 65% to 90% under this mission.

Mother Fartuna Abdullahi brought in baby Muhim Mohammed, 9 months old (wearing a white and green shirt), to get his first measles vaccination. She has seven children at home and makes sure they all get their routine childhood vaccinations. She knew to bring Muhim today because the social mobilizers came to her house and let her know about the campaign. She has lives in Jilab IDP camp for 4 years now. She was displaced to Jilab when her family lost all of their animals to the previous drought crisis. To earn small money she cleans for people in the town of Garowe.
There is a mobile clinic that goes into the IDP camp 3 times a week to provide vaccinations as communicable diseases like diarrhea, cholera and measles are more frequent due to lack of water and displacement during the drought crisis. The Mother and Baby Center is one of the locations (a “temporary fixed location”) where a vaccination campaign is taking place today.
The mobile clinic is run by the Jilab Health Center is supported by UNICEF and the Ministry of Health through donations by the Government of Sweden. Maimuna Hussein (giving the vaccine), Head of Health Center and Nurse Services. They do immunization and nutrition social mobilization, mother and child maternal health 24-hour services, antenatal care, postnatal care. UNICEF supports nutrition, vaccination and general support. Catchment area is I 27,271 people. Some people come from 6 kms away. She says that 99 per cent of mothers get their children vaccinated once they have the consultations. Some community members challenge getting children vaccinated but when there is an outbreak, they realize that the vaccines are necessary. It’s usually fathers that resist because they are away at work when the mobilizers come or when the mom goes to the clinic and gets educated about vaccinations. She said that spreading the information about vaccines should be increased through radio and SMS.
The Jilab Health Center vaccinates around 200 children below 5 years old. They also scan and treat children for SAM. In June they screened 709 children and admitted 21. In Port-de-Paix, Haiti, Pierre-Louis, a health-worker, and community mobilizers from Save The Children served 33 mothers from the Baguette village where they carried out a Rally Post.

Halima takes her baby back home after the measles vaccine. Halima Abdi (blue/purple scarf) brought in her baby, Munira Mohamed (7 months old, she is holding her) for a measles vaccine. Also with her is her 1-year-old girl (wearing brown printed dress) who is already up to date on vaccines. She heard about the event through the outreach health workers mobilizers. She has 4 children and cares for them mostly alone while her husband moves around the town selling clothes to support the family. Halima used to clean homes in town for an income, but since the drought many people have stopped having a cleaner come as they are also suffering with less income. They lived in Baidoa but once the drought increased, they moved to Garowe where there are less people.

There has been outbreaks of diseases and so this year there will be 2 rounds of an integrated vaccination campaigns (one was in March the next is in November) to immunize for measles and polio along with vitamin A supplementation and deworming.
In July there was a measles outbreak and more children for suffering but there was an outreach campaign in response to the outbreak and the situation soon stabilized. After the outreach about immunization around 530 children under 5 years old were brought into the clinic for their dose.

A Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) Brasília, a Organização Pan-Americana da Saúde (OPAS) e a Secretaria de Saúde do Distrito Federal lançaram o projeto Imuniza Estrutural, que busca aumentar a cobertura de vacinação contra COVID-19 e outras doenças imunopreveníveis, com o envolvimento da comunidade, em área de alta vulnerabilidade socioeconômica.
O projeto possui três pilares: comunicação e mobilização social; monitoramento e sustentabilidade das ações; e vacinação das populações mais vulneráveis.

In July 2023, with the support of UNICEF, 87,823 children were vaccinated against measles, 111,718 children were vaccinated with the Pentavalent 3 vaccine and 238,547 people were vaccinated against COVID-19 as part of the routine immunization program.

The Kirk U.S. Army Health Clinic hosted a mass immunization clinic at the APG North (Aberdeen) Recreation Center, Jan. 14. The clinic was open to eligible APG personnel, to include servicemembers, civilian and contractor employees, spouses and families. During the clinic, the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccinations and booster shots were available for participants. The clinic also offered the Influenza vaccine.
