In Jan 2011 the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI) and its partners are rolling out a new vaccine to prevent pneumonia in Kenya. In the developing world, pneumonia kills in the neighborhood of 1.4 million kids every year. Pneumococcal, the deadliest strain of that illness (and a major cause of what we might call “regular” pneumonia), kills 800,000.
Kenya's pneumococcal vaccine's official launch date is Feb 14, but we were able to photograph a clinic near the Kibera slum in Nairobi that already started providing the vaccine this week.
This health center is the Langata (sometimes called Kibera) District’s regional distribution center for the 36 clinics within the district. They collect all of the vaccines from the Regional Disbursement Center and, since they must maintain the cold chain to ensure the efficacy and safety of the vaccine, haul them back to Langata in well-used, white Styrofoam coolers. There, they are stored in an upright, avocado green refrigerator. But, it works and that’s what counts. They are then divided up and dispersed to the 27 clinics in the District that have trained personnel to give the vaccines.
The 13th Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA) will be celebrated from April 25th to May 2nd, 2015. The regional slogan for VWA 2015 is “Boost your power! Get vaccinated!” Vaccines are weakened or killed pathogens that help your immune system fight diseases. Vaccines do not make you sick, but prepare your body to fight off disease when exposed to full strength pathogens in the future. Although we do not provide health services, we note the number of immunizations administered in the province. According to data supplied by the Mozambique Ministry of Health, in Cabo Delgado province in 2005, over 58,000 children were fully immunized by their first birthday, with vaccines delivered by VillageReach. This is a 36% increase over the number of children immunized in 1997, before we began serving the province.

Year 2005 Star of Hope ambulance started its services in Santos, Brazil.
The main objective is to offer basic health care among children at nursery schools in the slum areas in Santos. All the children in the program receives immunization and will meet health care proffessionals on regular basis.

Nurses are working at the Jawle Health Center mobile vaccine clinic in Garowe, is set up in the Jawle IDP camp Mother and Baby center. The clinic moves to different places around the IDP camps 3 days a week so that they can reach many people. UNICEF works through EPI donors like GAVI to supports partner organizations like World Vision, Save the Children, CRC and the Puntland Ministry of Health. Many pastoralists are coming to the IDP camp here because the drought is killing off their livestock. There has been outbreaks of diseases and so this year there will be 2 rounds of an integrated vaccination campaigns (one was in March the next is in November) to immunize for measles and polio along with vitamin A supplementation and deworming.
In July there was a measles outbreak and more children for suffering but there was an outreach campaign in response to the outbreak and the situation soon stabilized. After the outreach about immunization around 530 children under 5 years old were brought into the clinic for their dose.

The Kirk U.S. Army Health Clinic hosted a mass immunization clinic at the APG North (Aberdeen) Recreation Center, Jan. 14. The clinic was open to eligible APG personnel, to include servicemembers, civilian and contractor employees, spouses and families. During the clinic, the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccinations and booster shots were available for participants. The clinic also offered the Influenza vaccine. Halima Yusuf is 15 months old (yellow scarf). She has been getting treatment for malnutrition at of Jawle Health Center in Garowe town with ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) for 5 days now. Her mother Qarto Abdala says that now Halima is energetic and smiling after the treatment. In one week, she should be finished with the treatment porgramme. They are from the IDP camp nearby and are suffering with little food and water due to the drought.
Thef Jawle Health Center in Garowe town serves an area of over 33,000 people that includes many internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. The Health Center has a solar powered (on top of the roof on the right) cold chain storage unit to keep vaccines at the right temperature (blue box). On the right side of the center, mothers bring their children for vaccinations while on the left, the children are being screened and treated as outpatient for malnutrition. The center has mother and child services, nutrition treatment and a pharmacy.
The cold chain storage is one year old and supported by UNICEF through a Chibania grant and the vaccinations, health worker trainings and some incentives are provided by UNCEF with thanks to GAVI. The mother and child maternal health (MCMH) services are supported through the UK Government and RUTF by USAID.
They screen an average of 1000 children a month for malnutrition and admit around 30-40 children for moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) and 20-30 for severe acute malnutrition (SAM).

Making health facilities accessible to poor families in rural areas and ensuring universal access to quality healthcare can help bring down the graph of infant and maternal mortality in India. The high burden of infant deaths in India can be attributed to easily preventable birth complications, infection and preterm births. Big FM in partnership with UNICEF India has started working on awareness creation on Immunization. Radio Jockey Vikas Kaushik visited Mewat district in Haryana on 9th September and spoke to various functionaries. Ms. Razia is a ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) coordinator. She oversees the ASHA workers record on immunisation, antenatal screening etc.

Monthly Immunization Clinic. This clinic was held at the beginning of the school year so a heavy turnout was expected. These conditions provided an opportunity to exercise a drill in mass immunizaton utilize the Base-X POD system. Crews, MFD Resource personnel, MFD Admin personnel, MFD Fire Inspectors and MFD Connector volunteers were rotated in to participate in the physical construction of the PODs and to manage flow of patients and families and care of drill participants. Crews were also rotated in and given the opportunity to disassemble and pack the PODs at completion of drill. Staff from Maricopa County Health Services, Nurses from Mesa Public Schools and staff from Maricopa County Emergency Management also were key participants in patient care and observation of the drill.
