Halima Abdi (blue/purple scarf) brought in her baby, Munira Mohamed (7 months old, she is holding her) for a measles vaccine. Also with her is her 1-year-old girl (wearing brown printed dress) who is already up to date on vaccines. She heard about the event through the outreach health workers mobilizers. She has 4 children and cares for them mostly alone while her husband moves around the town selling clothes to support the family. Halima used to clean homes in town for an income, but since the drought many people have stopped having a cleaner come as they are also suffering with less income. They lived in Baidoa but once the drought increased, they moved to Garowe where there are less people.
Nurses are working at the Jawle Health Center mobile vaccine clinic in Garowe, is set up in the Jawle IDP camp Mother and Baby center. The clinic moves to different places around the IDP camps 3 days a week so that they can reach many people. UNICEF works through EPI donors like GAVI to supports partner organizations like World Vision, Save the Children, CRC and the Puntland Ministry of Health. Many pastoralists are coming to the IDP camp here because the drought is killing off their livestock. There has been outbreaks of diseases and so this year there will be 2 rounds of an integrated vaccination campaigns (one was in March the next is in November) to immunize for measles and polio along with vitamin A supplementation and deworming.
In July there was a measles outbreak and more children for suffering but there was an outreach campaign in response to the outbreak and the situation soon stabilized. After the outreach about immunization around 530 children under 5 years old were brought into the clinic for their dose.

A Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) Brasília, a Organização Pan-Americana da Saúde (OPAS) e a Secretaria de Saúde do Distrito Federal lançaram o projeto Imuniza Estrutural, que busca aumentar a cobertura de vacinação contra COVID-19 e outras doenças imunopreveníveis, com o envolvimento da comunidade, em área de alta vulnerabilidade socioeconômica.
O projeto possui três pilares: comunicação e mobilização social; monitoramento e sustentabilidade das ações; e vacinação das populações mais vulneráveis.

In Jan 2010 the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI) and its partners are rolling out a new vaccine to prevent pneumonia in Kenya. In the developing world, pneumonia kills in the neighborhood of 1.4 million kids every year. Pneumococcal, the deadliest strain of that illness (and a major cause of what we might call "regular" pneumonia), kills 800,000.
Kenya's pneumococcal vaccine's official launch date is Feb 14, but we were able to photograph a clinic near the Kibera slum in Nairobi that already started providing the vaccine this week.
This health center is the Langata (sometimes called Kibera) District's regional distribution center for the 36 clinics within the district. They collect all of the vaccines from the Regional Disbursement Center and, since they must maintain the cold chain to ensure the efficacy and safety of the vaccine, haul them back to Langata in well-used, white Styrofoam coolers. There, they are stored in an upright, avocado green refrigerator. But, it works and that's what counts. They are then divided up and dispersed to the 27 clinics in the District that have trained personnel to give the vaccines.

Village Samho, Samho Block, Dist. Begusarai, Bihar, INDIA. Ritu Rani, Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM), attends paitents inside Anganwadi centre in Begusarai, Bihar. Social Mobilisation Network (SMNet), a UNICEF-supported initiative which mobilizes the community at every level village, block, district, region, state to get their children immunized from basic diseases as part of the governments routine immunization programmes. SMNet was started essentially in the 2000s as part of the government's anti-Polio campaigns. SMNet officers thus operate at every level, starting from the village level (where there's a Community Mobilisation Coordinator, typically belonging to the village), to the block, district, sub-region, and region, where there are corresponding mobilizing coordinators for every block, district, sub-region etc. SMNet is premised on the idea that people from within the community are the best ones to mobilize others in their people be it their village, their block or district. But this is where officers such as Bijay Ranjan prove that familiarity is merely an added advantage to the mobilizing process: the real trick lies in effective communication. It is this that made SMNet successful to the extent that SMNET Bihar officers have gone on mobilization drives to other states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh etc. Although SMNet started as a tool to fight Polio campaign, over the years it has transcended its original definition, and become a pool of human resource that can be realigned to any other social/developmental goal. In fact, as of 2015, exactly a year after the WHO declared India as Polio Free, the SMNet is busy tackling diarrhea, malnutrition, hygiene and breast-feeding, all of which are critical to keeping Polio at bay. Immunization in India continues to be an ongoing challenge.

Of the 201 districts, 82 districts are concentrated in the four states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and nearly 25% of the unvaccinated or partially vaccinated children of India are in 82 districts of these four states. These districts will be targeted for intensive efforts to improve the routine immunization coverage in the country. Morogoro Region in Tanzania has improved its routine immunization performance following a number of initiatives undertaken by regional authorities and development partners, including USAID’s MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership. MOMENTUM supported the region to use an approach called ‘Periodic Intensification of Routine Immunization’ — which uses time-limited and intermittent vaccine campaigns to administer routine vaccinations to under-vaccinated populations – to identify children who missed routine vaccines and those who didn't complete the full vaccine schedule.

Nurse Fathima Yousuf Ahmed (black hijab) is one of the nurses giving the vaccinations today. She is providing baby Shuib Mohamed, 3 months old, with polio vaccine drops and will also get a measles injection in his arm. Shuib is being held by mother Fatuma Mohamed (red scarf and white polka dots on head scarf). Fatuma walked an hour to the health center, from Shabele IDP camp, to get her baby vaccinated.

Today at the Badbaado Health Center there is vaccination campaign for Penta 3 (for prevention of 5 diseases in children) and OBV (polio vaccine). With donations from KFW, UNICEF is supporting the OTP screening and treatment of malnutrition with RUTF, vaccinations (funded by GAVI) and supplies for the center.
They vaccinate around 7-10 babies a day, 6 days a week.

We visited this boy during a Pulse Polio round in North Dinajpur (West Bengal, India). He had fever and a rash. His parents had refused vaccination. They agreed to give it a few days later when he got better. We discovered that they had not given him Measles immunization. The boy's father Niranjan Mistri is an expert traditional craftsman. He later prepared a wooden statue of a mother and child which is on display at the local health sub centre.
Measles immunization was uncommon in the 1960s and was only introduced in India after 1985. Todat it is helping to save the lives of hundreds of children in India.
