Somalia has recently received 1.4 million vials of cholera vaccines, which is the largest volume in the past 7 years. The Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and WHO are collaborating to prevent further outbreaks and help those in need, as cholera outbreaks are happening around the East African region. The first batch of 700,000 vials will be transported to Bossaso, which currently has the highest number of cholera cases in the country. The remaining vaccines will be distributed to other cholera hotspots.

Rebecca Cates, an immunization nurse with the Department of Health and Environment, accepted a proclamation from Chairman Ed Eilert at today's BOCC meeting. The proclamation designates April 27 to May 4 as National Infant Immunization Week in Johnson County and encourages parents to make vaccinating their children a priority.

The Camp of Holl-Holl has been set up in 2012 and is now home to more than 4,000 refugees, mostly from Somalia and Ethiopia. Most of them are women and children. They have seeking refuge in Djibouti for decades.
In the camp, UNICEF is providing support for the treatment of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) cases and ensuring that preventive and curative services are available. UNICEF is also supporting the Government to ensure health services are available in the camp, including immunization and ante and post natal care services. In the area of education, UNICEF through its implementing partner LWF is providing support to ensure refugee children receive quality education, and UNICEF contributed for the enrolment of refugee children by providing students kits, school furniture, teachers incentives and teachers training. In the area of child protection, UNICEF’s objectives are to actively prevent children from being harmed; to monitor violations committed against them and to develop programmes to respond to instances where children are at risk of or have been subjected to violence, exploitation or abuse. Through its partnership with LWF, UNICEF provided crucial psychosocial support for children and their caregivers to help them overcome the difficulties they are experiencing and develop positive coping mechanism such as protecting girls from child marriage. UNICEF also supports the camp to set up child and youth friendly spaces to organize activities in a safe and stimulating environment.
Furthermore, UNICEF with their partners contribute in building child protection system with capacity building on child protection risk, prevention and response and organize awareness raising campaign to protection from violence, abuse and exploitation. UNICEF and its partners work to provide clean water, basic toilets and to encourage basic hygiene practices in the camp.

In a landmark step to accelerate progress towards ending polio in Somalia and accelerating immunization coverage, the Prime Minister of Somalia, His Excellency Hamza Abdi Barre, has today launched a national task force on immunization and polio.
The Somalia Immunization and Polio Eradication Task Force (SIPE), chaired by the Prime Minister, will oversee and coordinate polio eradication and immunization efforts across the country, mobilize financial and technical resources, and ensure that every child in Somalia is reached with lifesaving vaccines. The task force comprises key health officials at federal and state levels and international partners.
