Milo, a 5-year-old Rat Terrier mix, was rescued two years ago. “Milo is very smart, lovable, loyal and a nice blend between a lap dog and an active, energetic squeaky ball chaser,” says Mary, his dog mom. “Milo loves any toy with a squeaker in it and will fetch a squeaky ball till you make him stop. We intentionally buy cheap, 2-for-$5 squeaky toys, just so he can rip them open, pull out all the fuzz and kill the squeaky ‘heart.’ He can totally demolish and kill a squeaky toy in less than 5 minutes.”
Sunny, a trained therapy dog who’s about 8 years old, had to wear a sock because of an injury to her paw pad. “It took a long time to heal and the sock sure helped,” says her dog mom, Katrin. “Sunny is my first canine love. My bond with her is truly special.”
Pierson is a year-old Australian Shepherd and/or Border Collie mix. In January, he was rescued by his dog mom, Dawn, from Pierson Park, where he’d been living as a stray for nearly a month. “He has adjusted quite well to his new home,” Dawn says. “He is mostly very well-behaved and very intelligent. I try to teach him new things on a regular basis in order to keep him from getting bored. The most recent trick I have taught him is to jump through a hoop.”
Jingles, an 11-year-old Australian Shepherd, is a champion agility dog. “So if he's not out racing over jumps and nosing through weave poles, you might catch him relaxing in front of a cool fan,” says his dog mom, Karen. “Good thing he's willing to share the breeze, since one look from those stunning chestnut and azure eyes can literally make me melt.”
Cali is a 6-year-old Lhasa Apso. “She loooooves sleeping next to me and we try to keep each other warm,” says Michelle, her dog mom. “She loves kisses, snuggles and cuddles! She loves sleeping on the bed (obviously). She's my furry bundle of joy.”

This picture of Kaiju was taken a few days before he broke both his hind knees and underwent four months of recovery. “He is so lovable around us, and has not expressed his frustration or fear with aggression toward anybody,” writes his dog parents.
Lilo is a 6-year-old Chihuahua mix adopted from a rescue where her dog mom, Jasmine, volunteered. “At first, I never cared for ‘purse dogs,’ but when I met her at the rescue, we both fell in love with each other,” Jasmine says. “She was abandoned at a grooming business and the owner was never located. She's very feisty, but at the same time, extremely intelligent, and easier to train than any dog I have ever had before.”
Nemesis (right) and her 8-week-old puppy were trotting down the street when their pet parent Shay rescued them in 2004. Shay found a great home for the puppy, and fostered Nemmi while the Pit Bull had some parasites cleared up. “During that time I fell in love,” Shay says. “She has this thing where she holds down smaller critters, dogs and cats alike, and nibbles (grooms) them up and down with her little front teeth. It is so cute to watch.” While her cats will only put up with it for a short period of time, Shay says her hound dog “will let her do it forever.”
Dakota, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge in January 2009, was “the size of a Great Dane,” says his dog mom, Pam. “He got me through the roughest of times and I am forever grateful. He was my shadow, my best friend and a huge, 150-pound baby. His left ear always tilted over and never stood up straight – it was his trademark and added to his great personality.
